E very town, no matter how big or small, has its tales—historic,

poignant, mysterious, and even tragic. We leave it to historians and citizens to document, remember and retell the events that ultimately give a town its character. What if Milton Hershey had kept his candy operation in Lancaster? Would the county be known for choco-late rather than the Amish?

Imagine how differently we would view Gettysburg if it were not for the tragic battle that not only changed the tide of a war, but also changed the world. History is made up of millions of stories like these. Out of those millions, some stories have created a mystifying atmosphere, especially in late October when there is a noticeable chill in the air.

Whether you believe in ghosts or just enjoy a little heebie-jeebies with your history, towns across Pennsylvania are shedding some light on the darker side of their pasts through ghost walks.

Phi lade lph ia

Where else would we begin our journey into ghostly encounters than Philadelphia? Ghost Tours of Philadel-phia (GTP) offers visitors a few different experiences, including a Candlelight Walking Tour of Society Hill and Inde-pendence Park. What looks beautiful and inviting during the day takes on an

ominous hue when darkness falls. The tour departs from the Signers Garden at 5th and Chestnut streets and lasts 75 to 90 minutes before ending at 2nd and Walnut streets.

Another GTP offering is the Haunt-ed Trolley Tour. On board the Victori-an-style trolley, riders will hear legends and lore of the city’s mysterious dark side while visiting up to 20 locations in Society Hill and Old City. The tour will make stops to give guests a closer look at three foreboding sites. Rides depart from 5th and Market streets and last ap-proximately 90 minutes.

West Ches ter

Every Friday and Saturday eve-ning in October visitors are invited to stroll the streets of West Ches-ter to hear tales of ghosts, folklore and the associated history of the quaint town. A guide, dressed as a gentleman from the 1850s, will lead you through neighborhoods and

side streets of the town while telling tales of intrigue, like those related to the lost souls of the Underground Railroad. Visitors will stand at the for-mer location of the gallows, where murderers were hanged for their crimes.

The tour departs from The Lincoln Room, 28 W. Market St., a location that is said to be haunted by a horse thief that was hanged across the street. The tour begins at 8 p.m. and takes ap-proximately 90 minutes. Reservations are required.

The Downtown Bethlehem Ghost Tour is offered Thursday through Sunday, starting on Sept. 27 and running througout October. A cos-tumed guide will bring the history of Bethlehem to life as you walk the streets where the first Moravians set-tled centuries ago.

All the stories told on this tour are de-rived from research or family lore not usually told outside the immediate fam-ilies involved.

The tour lasts about one hour and departs and ends at 1 W. Broad St. in Bethlehem. Advanced booking is always a good idea but not required.

From Sept. 9 through Dec. 17, the Jim Thorpe Rotary hosts Ghost Walks in Old Mauch Chunk (original name of Jim Thorpe). A costumed guide with a lantern will take guests on a one-mile journey through the historic proper-ties and detail the intriguing history of the people who lived in them. The tour starts at the Inn at Jim Thorpe and me-anders down Broadway to the Old Jail Museum, where the handprint of Alex-

ander Campbell is said to appear on the wall. Campbell was one of seven Irish coal miners known as the Molly Magu-ires hanged for murder in the 1800s. All of the men maintained their innocence to the end. On his way to the gallows, Alexander Campbell put his hand on the dirty fl oor of his cell and then placed it fi rmly on the wall, proclaiming, "This handprint will remain as proof of my innocence." Though wardens over the years have tried to erase the handprint by washing, painting and replastering over it, the handprint is still visible to-day.

Though this one-hour tour is not frightening, it isn’t recommended for children 6 and under. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Lancaster ’s C a n d l e l i g h t Walking Tours allow visitors to experience 300 years of history while exploring some long-for-gotten folklore. Guests on this 90-minute walk are sure to be engrossed with haunting tales of eternal vigils, fatal curses and star-crossed lov-ers.

The tour de-parts from the Soldiers & Sail-ors Monument at Penn Square at the intersections

of King and Queen streets. Advanced tickets are required.

Visitors to Gettysburg in search of goose bumps have many year-round op-tions. His best-selling Ghosts of Gettys-burg book series make Mark Nestbitt the most famous storyteller in Gettysburg. Nesbitt also has four tours based on his books. Traveling down historic streets, eerie cemeteries and sites where men suffered horribly, guides tell the stories that can’t always be found in history books.

All but one of the tours begins at the Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walk-ing Tour headquarters on 271 Baltimore St. Duration varies with each destina-tion, and reservations are recommend-ed for all walking tours.

The statue of Union General G.K. Warren overlooks the Get-tysburg Battle eld. More than 50,000 casualties occurred during the Battle of Gettysburg including that of Jennie Wade, the only civilian casualty of the battle.

The Ghosts of Gettysburg Bus Tour is also very popular, as guests visit sites that the walking tours cannot. Reserva-tions are required for the bus tour.

Miss Betty’s Ghosts in Gettysburg of-fers the only two-hour driving tour in town. Guests will visit a barn on a pri-vately owned portion of the battlefi eld; Sach’s Covered Bridge, the site of the retreat of the Confederacy; and the site of a Northern fi eld hospital. This tour is not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Advance reservations are required.

The folks at Haunted Pittsburgh dub themselves as “…the archivists of all things that go bump in the night in Western Pennsylvania,” and, appar-ently, many agree. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says, "This is truly great stuff— a delightful mix of Western Pennsylvania history and eerie supernatural lore — all meticulously researched, brilliantly crafted, and beautifully told."

There are four tours offered by

Haunted Pittsburgh, one of which is a virtual tour that you can experience without leaving the house. Because they are held outdoors, the walking tours are offered from May through Oc-tober. Only the Incline Ghost Tour takes guests inside as you ride the Mononga-hela Incline. Don’t expect gimmicks on a Haunted Pittsburgh tour; instead you’ll experience tales that will get un-der your skin without theatrics.

All the tours—Downtown, Oakland and the Incline Plane Ghost Tours—take approximately 90 minutes to complete.

412-302-5223www.hauntedpittsburghtours.com

All of these tours combine two of my favorite things, history and storytelling. What really makes or breaks any tour is the ability of the guide to mentally transport the tourist to the time and place of the story. I am fortunate to live in a state with such a rich history that there is simply no shortage of intriguing and mystifying stories.

For links and more information on all the tours, use your smart phone to scan the QR code below or just log on to whereandwhen.com.

The Incline Ghost Tour takes visitors up the Monongahela Incline in Pittsburgh. Riders climb the 369 feet above the city to the top of Mt. Washington. The unique 90-minute tour often sells out so order your tickets early.

“When you stop doing things for fun you might as well be dead.” -Hemingway

Fall was a special time during our growing up years on the

farm. It meant seeing our hard work through the spring and summer seasons come to fruition. Some years it meant bracing for the long winter ahead when crops did not produce. Because we never quite knew what Mother Nature was going to send our way, it was imperative that we planned for the worst and hoped for the best. This is a great life lesson and one that I am thankful to have learned early in my life.

Whether a lean year or fruitful one, our family always managed to set aside some time to laugh and play together. It’s true that laughter is the best medicine. And playing is not a waste of time. When the two are combined, they become a wonderful tonic to renew one’s spirit.

We can help you get started. Be kind to yourself. All work and no play make us boring and bored. Just look for the right medicine between the covers of this issue. We prescribe several doses taken at regular intervals. Unlike TV commercials that instruct one to stop due to negative side effects, you’ll fi nd only positive results here! Things will begin to look better. You’ll feel more energetic. Distractions will become opportunities. Solutions, once sought, will become appar-ent. Life is good!

If you won’t take our advice, at least, listen to Hemingway!

Like most who enjoy a glass of wine, I have often wondered how I might learn more about the an-cient beverage (some scholars place its origins as early as 3,000 B.C.). I’ve wondered about the dif-ferences between dry, sweet, and semi-sweet, why wine glasses come in different shapes, and the meanings behind the lingo used by connoisseurs, such as “body” and “finish.” Imagine my delight to discover that the answers to my questions lay along a path dubbed the “Groundhog Wine Trail.” All over the United States the word “Punxsutawney” brings to

mind pretty much one thing… the weather-predicting groundhog, Phil, who graces newscasts once a year with his dire prognostica-tions concerning the arrival of spring. What many may not re-alize (and I was one) is that the area is also home to a number of award-winning wineries, a cluster of which are located along the Groundhog Wine Trail. In addition to forming a path of wineries at which would-be wine aficionados may both taste and learn, the group holds a yearly one-day festival where both pal-ates and curiosity may be sated. In 2013, the Groundhog Wine Trail

Some of the Clear eld County vineyards grow their own grapes. The soil is similar to areas in Germany known for

wines made from Traminette and Concord grapes.

Festival, which will be held in a large hall on the Clearfield fair-grounds, will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. The trail, which includes about 10 Central Pennsylvania wineries, was first pio-neered by John Norbert of Laurel Mountain Winery in Falls Creek. Kenneth Starr of Starr Hill Winery in Curwensville took over in 2006, and the first festival was held in 2008.The festival, which is the highlight of the wine trail, includes wine tasting, a commemorative glass for each attendee, and an oppor-tunity to peruse the displays of vendors who bring wine acces-sories such as glasses, smoked cheeses, and nuts of all flavors to the fest. Gift baskets of goodies are also given away. “(The festival includes) all types of things that have to do with wine

and having fun,” stated Starr, who added that the day is divided into two sessions, one running from 1 to 4 p.m., and the other from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees may pur-chase a ticket for either session or both. Both sessions include live music. In 2012, a bluegrass group known as Mama Corn played dur-ing the afternoon, and the 14th Street Jazz Band, which includes a full wind section, saxophonist, trumpet, and guitars, entertained in the evening.

Starr explained that among winemakers, competition is friend-ly and the community is close

knit. To spread that cooperative outlook, an Amateur Wine Mak-ers' Contest judged by the Ameri-can Wine Society is a part of the festival. Nearly 20 novice wine-makers received medals, ranging from double-gold to gold, silver, and bronze at the 2012 event.

During the festival, wine trail wineries offer wine tasting and share their knowledge of winemaking at their individu-al displays. “Each booth does some of their own education about how their wines are made and the benefits of Pennsylvania wines,” ex-plained Starr.

Of course, wine begins with grapes, and Penn-sylvania is among the top ten grape producers in the country. The source of that high level of productivity, according to Starr, is our soil. “I would say it’s like build-ing a house. You have to have a good foundation,” he stated. Soil conditions along the Groundhog Wine Trail are similar to those in Germany, so, in 1999, Starr visit-ed Germany to learn more about how to grow grapes. His winery now has 3,000 vines, producing

German-style grapes, such as the traminette, along with the better-known concord grapes.

Starr remarked that about 80 percent of wines sold are sweet to semi-sweet, noting that he be-lieves wine makers’ palates are different from the majority of wine tasters. “Wine makers like the dry wines, but it’s the sweet and semi-sweet (wines) that sell,” he said with a chuckle.

“Exhilaration” is a word used fre-quently by John Long, CEO of the U.S. Equestrian Foundation (USEF), to describe the world of equestrian sports. Speaking about the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in a video editorial in the June/July edition of “Equestrian” magazine, Long reflected on the emotions that

rise from watching a horse and rider complete a tightly con-

trolled dres-sage passage

or leap high over a difficult ob-

stacle.“The ex-

hilaration of a world-class

horse rider performing at their best is a feeling that no interna-tional border, culture, or barriers can d a m p e n , ” Long re-

marked. The 2012 Games

marked the 100th year of equestrian sports in the Olympic movement, he noted.

Although the Games are over for four more years, horse shows will continue through the fall in southeastern Penn-sylvania. While the

members of the U.S. Equestrian Team may not

compete at these events, world-class athletes will still

be present. Who knows? Per-haps the Olympic riders of the

future are competing in this

fall’s junior beginner classes.Horse shows are designed for rid-

ers and drivers to test their skills. As with any competition, horse shows allow athletes to exhibit the skills they have developed. Many stables host smaller horse shows, where visitors are welcome but few. Spec-tators who aren’t part of the horsey set will feel more comfortable at the area’s bigger shows, such as the Lud-wig’s Corner Horse Show and Coun-try Fair and Dressage at Devon. Lo-cated at the corner of routes 72 and 419, four miles south of Lebanon, the Quentin Riding Club bills itself as the showplace grounds of the East Coast. Spectators are always wel-come, free of charge, to any of the club’s shows, the biggest of which is the QRC Fall Hunter Jumper Show. The show spans four days, from Thursday, Aug. 30, to Sunday, Sept. 2. As the name implies, the area of competition focuses on show hunters and show jumpers.

The QRC Fall Hunter Jumper Show has been held for more than 75 years, said Stephanie Lawson, editor/publisher of “Pennsylvania Equestrian.” The categories and schedule of classes may be down-loaded at http://www.quentinrid-ingclub.com/horse_show_schedule.html. Lawson pointed out that the show features a hunter derby – a newer division with tougher courses that mimic the fox-hunting field. The show also offers Jockey Club-sponsored awards for former race-horses.

“A big thing in the industry right now is rescuing thoroughbreds who are washed up as racehorses,” Law-son explained. “Whereas once they would have been sent to auction and often from there to slaughter, now there are many nonprofits that take them in for retraining and rehom-ing, and they often do really well as show horses.

57 - W&W Fall 2012

Page 58: Where & When, Pennsylvania's Travel Guide-Fall 2012

58 - W&W Fall 2012

The awards are reinforcement of that path.”

Lawson also serves as the publicist for the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show and Country Fair; the annual event has been held on Labor Day weekend for almost 70 years. The show’s high-light, the $7,500 Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Association Jumper Classic, will begin around 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3. The Valley Forge Military Academy and College color guard will appear be-fore the Classic. An antique and classic car show will also take place that day.

The country fair will offer rides, games, shopping, entertainment, food, and an entire tent full of games and activities, including face painting, for kids. A collection of 35 national and lo-cal vendors housed in a circus tent com-prises the “Shops at Ludwig’s Corner,” where guests will be able to buy every-thing from fudge to teak furniture, fi ne art to fashions, and show souvenirs to equestrian supplies.

There is a cost for admission, al-though parking is free. Proceeds from the show and fair will support efforts to preserve the 33-acre show grounds as open space.

For a change of pace, the Keystone

Barrel Classic is next on the list of noteworthy autumn shows, as it is held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9. As its name implies, the Classic is dedi-cated to the equestrian sport of barrel racing. Considered a Western sport of-ten seen at rodeos, the goal for horses and riders is to race in a cloverleaf pat-tern around three barrels set in a trian-gular shape, aiming for the lowest time and the fewest faults. Riders must plan ahead, and their horses must be strong, agile, and intelligent. The KBC will be held at the Mountain Springs Arena, located one mile north of the Shartles-ville Exit 23 off Interstate 78 at 3501 Mountain Road, Hamburg. For more, see www.keystonebarrelracing.com.

The Western theme will continue the following weekend with the 24th annual championship Liberty Pro Rodeo at the Lu Lu Shrine Center, 5140 Butler Pike, Plymouth Meeting. Profes-sional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country will compete in their respective events, including saddle bronc riding, bull riding, and barrel rac-ing. Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14 and 15, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. Ar-rive early on Sunday, though, as the 4-H

A Carriage Exhi-bition will be held in the main ring of the Ludwig's Cor-ner Horse Show on Sunday, Septem-ber 2, followed by a pleasure drive of the surround-ing countryside and the awarding of the Concourse d’Elegance Perpet-ual Trophy, estab-lished and donat-ed by Dr. and Mrs. Donald J. Rosato.

m o u n t e d drill team will perform at 1:30 p.m.

The ro-deo is a tick-eted event, with sepa-rate prices for children and adults. Tickets may be pur-chased on-line for a discount at www.liber-typrorodeo.com or for full price at the gate, beginning two hours before show time. The website also has a coloring page that may be printed out to get the “little cowboys and cowgirls” ready for the ro-deo, as well as a list of the many kinds of carnival food that will be available at the event.

The Plantation Field Horse Tri-als will be held at 450 Apple Grove Road, Unionville, from Friday to Sun-day, Sept. 21 to 23. The trials include dressage, stadium jumping, and cross-country jumping and are patterned after the comprehensive cavalry tests used decades ago. Schedules, maps, and more are available at www.plantation-fi eldhorsetrials.com.

The Devon Horse Show Grounds, lo-cated on U.S. Route 30 in Devon, will host Dressage at Devon from Tuesday to Sunday, Sept. 25 to 30. The event com-bines world-class dressage competition and the world’s largest open breed show with the international Fall Festival show and special activities for the entire fam-ily. It attracts hundreds of horses and riders from around the world plus thou-

sands of equestrian and non-equestrian spectators each year. Purchase tickets for reserved seating at www.dressageat-devon.org, or buy general admission tickets at the gate.

For a more casual outing, visit the Bucks County Horse Park at 8934 Easton Road, Revere. Part of the Bucks County Park System, the venue offers plenty of varying terrain for eventing and driving. Both competitive and ca-sual events are held frequently through-out the year, and day passes to use the trails are available. To see a schedule of events, visit www.buckscounty-horsepark.org.

Other horse events will be held throughout the fall. Visit www.where-andwhen.com for a partial listing so that you and your family can experi-ence the exhilaration for yourselves.

Corner Horse Show and Country Fair Labor Day weekend. The event, which features rides, games, entertainment, great food and shopping, raises funds to preserve the 33 acre show grounds as open space.

More than 250 years ago, Fort Li-gonier was built as an important link in a chain of garrisons created to ensure the supply lines for the British during the French and Indian War. An enemy never took the fort, though it was at-tacked twice and besieged by Native Americans.

Today, eight acres of the original site in Westmoreland County have been preserved. Before entering the re-constructed garrison, visitors are taken through the museum, which houses im-portant 18th-century pieces, including the George Washington Collection.

From Oct. 12–14, the Battle of Fort Ligonier will be commemo-rated during Fort Ligonier Days.

On the grounds of the fort, visitors will fi nd a living history encampment depicting frontier life, military tactics, drills, cannon fi ring, ceremonies, High-landers, redcoats, French troops, frontier folk, Native Americans and period music.

The town of Ligonier will come alive with a large parade on Saturday, free outdoor entertainment and approxi-mately 150 arts and crafts booths.

The most popular attraction of the event is the re-enactment of the Battle of Fort Ligonier on Saturday and Sun-day. The delicious festival food has to be a close second! Dozens of food vendors will line the Diamond and other areas of town to entice festival goers with their distracting aromas.

Since parking is not allowed in town during the event, free shuttle service to the festival is available from offi cial parking areas. The designated lots are handicapped accessible, and a $5 park-ing fee is charged. If you go:Fort Ligonier200 South Market Street (intersection of U.S. 30 and Rt. 711)Ligonier, PA 15658Phone: 724-238-4200
