Why look back?

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Dynamic obsolescence

Coren A. (1976) The sanity inspector:“A number of my contemporaries actually chose to

go into the Foreign Office: if they read Arabic at university, they were swooped on by Whitehall and sent to Japan; if they read Japanese, they were sent on a special FO training course to learn German, and subsequently placed in Kampala; if their predilection and brilliance were commercial, they were given posts where political expertise was the sole requirement; if they were geographers, they were despatched to found hospitals or advise on fowl pest. In short, as soon as they had completed the long and arduous process of learning something, it was no longer required. They were in a state of permanent dynamic obsolescence.”

Disruptive technologies

Christensen C. (1997) The innovator's dilemma:"A disruptive technology is a new technological

innovation, product, or service that eventually overturns the existing dominant technology in the market, despite the fact that the disruptive technology is both radically different from the leading technology and that it often initially performs worse than the leading technology according to existing measures of performance."

Predicting the future

Sam Goldwyn,Founder of MGM:

I never prophesy – especially about the future.

Historic blunders

• Telephone: This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us. Western Union internal memo, 1876.

• Radio: The wireless music box has no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular? Anonymous associates in response to David Sarnoff, Founder of RCA, urging for investment in the radio in the 1920s.

• Computer: I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. Thomas Watson, Founder of IBM, 1943.

Fooled you!

The picture on the last slide is a spoof. It was created by Troels Eklund Andersen, a Danish technical support technician. He started with a picture of a mock submarine manoeuvring room, added an old TV hanging on the wall, a 1970's teletype, and threw in a picture of a hardware store owner from Ohio.

Levy (1997)

Computer Assisted Language Learning: context and conceptualization (1997)

“Data Driven Learning was the only new approach to language teaching that was cited by survey respondents as a direct result of the attributes of the computer. In other words, this approach has been conceived with the computer in mind.”

Total Cloze (Storyboard, Fun with Texts) could also have been mentioned.

Davies (1997)

Lessons from the past, lessons for the future: 20 years of CALL (1997)

• Don’t regard technology as the panacea.

• Learn from the past.

• Don’t neglect training in using new technologies.

• Choose hardware and software that will last a few years.

• Open up to new ideas. Use your imagination.

Decoo (2001)

On the mortality of language learning

methods (2001)

A methodology is quite short-lived - roughly

equivalent to the average career span of a

teacher. Publishers of ICT materials tend to follow

the current methodology.

Teaching languages online: deconstructing the myths (2003)

• Saves time – no.

• Saves money – no.

• Saves staff – no.

• It’s a more effective way of learning - maybe?
