WHERE ACTION SPEAKSLOUDER THAN WORDS

Greetings from Jan Jagran Kendra!

I feel very grateful and excited in presenting the latest issue of our Annual Report. The journey that the organization has

been covering with great success made me feel proud. Much more satisfaction is felt with the day by day achievement

of our objectives with more and more beneficiaries.

Agriculture has always been on the prime focus of us. The need of the diversification and updation of the agricultural

practices is regularly met in the field. As our country is agriculture based, the urge of the time is to work out on

agriculture development with modern tools and techniques and increase in irrigated land. Watershed development

and management has again got its place in the topmost level of need in participatory way. We have been continuously

working with trainings, on-field demonstrations and supports for improved irrigation and latest agricultural techniques.

We have also worked for the improvement of plantation through support to farmers with free seeds, plants, fertilizers,

trainings, awareness, irrigation facilities and organic farming.

With Health as focus, we are working in the various projects to Stop TB. People are mobilized and testing being carried

out for the identification of Malaria and Kala Azar. Beneficiaries are also provided with the treatment besides diagnosis.

Awareness and Behaviour Change Communication are carried out along with the services for STI Treatment, Condom

Distribution and HIV Testing to halt and reverse the trend of spread of HIV/AIDS. Further, General Health Check-up,

Diagnosis, Treatment and Awareness are created by us using Mobile Medical Unit to ensure the facilities to be provided

at the remotest area of Jharkhand. We have also worked for the improvement of Sanitation practices of the people

through awareness building and support for free toilet construction.

With the label of billion plus population and youngest country of the world, the diversion in the basic livelihood is

required. They need to be made more competitive to the changing world with the weapon of vocational training that

could make them able to fetch alternative livelihood. So, the exercises on providing and upgrading incoming generating

skills need to be provided momentum. We have emphasized on vocational courses for the Child Labours, Orphans

and School Drop outs with residential and educational facilities. We have also been providing Skill Upgradation and

Innovative Design Development Trainings to the artisans through formation of the institution. More and more SHGs are

oriented with the vocational courses by us along with forward and backward linkages.

Finally, I would like to express my heartiest gratitude to all my colleagues, staffs, funders, supporters, beneficiaries and

other stakeholders with support of whom we are hereby publishing another successful issue of our Annual Report.

Let’s work harder for the better tomorrow and revisiting our goals daily.

Thanking all Once Again

Stop Human TraffickingJharkhand has always been known to be a state sustainable of its own because of its rich mineral resources and closely connected with the nature. But this property of its own has created havoc because of the dynamic and much transition world. These properties led the local of Jharkhand to migrate to compete with the rest of the world. The lure to make sustainable livelihood and compete with the outside world made the state vulnerable for the migration. The result led to make the rich state a victim of human trafficking. The victim group mainly comprises of children and women. The need based approach of JJK assessed the need of the time. JJK is working hard to work against the human trafficking. For the same, JJK is mobilizing and making awareness campaign in the remote areas to prevent this evil social act. JJK has mobilized and recovered many a

TRANsFORMATION OF A LIFE

Asha Devi (imaginary name) was a normal girl from the normal rural household. During her childhood she also dreamt of a normal girl getting married to some loving person and having a family with in- laws and children. She got married at the age of 16 with Pappu (imaginary name) who was very loving and caring to her. He uses to give her all the happiness but Aasha never knew about the way of earning of her husband. With the love and care of her husband she got mother of two baby boys. During the time of the birth of her second son, she came to knew that her husband is a smuggler of the costly woods. She always uses to live in fear and once that fear materialize when her husband got murdered by other smugglers. She became all alone with the responsibilities of her two sons and in-laws.

There came the friends of her husband who started taking undue advantage of her being widow. They use to support Aasha and for that support they started using her body for their pleasure. And these events changed her completely to a professional sex worker. With the advent of the TI project in the Bishnugarh Block, Aasha came in contact with the TI Staffs. With close interaction, it came out that she is unknown about the STIs, HIV and safe sex practices. She was not even ready to hear about all these as she always bears a lot of responsibilities upon her shoulders.

When she was taught about the safe sex practices, she show resistance towards use of the same as it would reduce her income and money is the thing that she only knew. With regular counselling and interactions with the TI Staffs, she came to know about some values but not to that much level.

It was found once that she was very ill. When the ORW visited the field, she came to know that she is in her home. After the interaction with her, ORW came to know that she use to fall ill quite often. With her physical examination, she was found to be having STI for which she was provided treatment without any cost. Then she visited the TI Office where the Counsellor provided counselling to her. Counsellor started using calculating the earning that she could have with the safe sex practices and the earning that can she have without that. This all changed her mind. She came to know that while without safe sex practices she could earn fast money for some time but with the safe sex practices she could earn much more for a longer period and in a consistent way.

She is now a Peer Educator at TI Bishnugarh and teaches other HRGS about the importance of safe sex practices.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-12NATURAL REsOURCE MANAGEMENT

Natural Resource Management

The rural and tribal communities mainly depend on the natural resources for their livelihoods. Watershed management is the integrated use of land, vegetation and water in a geographically discrete drainage area for the benefit of its residents, with the objective of protecting or conserving the hydrologic services that the watershed provides and of reducing or avoiding negative downstream or groundwater impacts. At JJK, the natural resource management programme has under taken the following programme :- 1. Watershed Development 2. Agriculture Productivity Enhancement 3. Plantation4. Integrated Village Development Programme

Watershed Development The watershed development approach has been adopted by JJK for more than a decade. The effort in common lands with regards to forestry, soil and water conservation has given high priority in its approach beside land and agriculture development. The objective of the programme is to arrest rainwater runoff and conserves it in situ where it falls. Water and soil conservation also leads to improved green

Case Study:

Labga VillageLabga is a village situated in Bundu Block of Ranchi Distirct. The village is 17 kms away from the Block Headquarter. It was lacking the basic amenities for the residents of the place. The village is surrounded by hills and forests and was lacking the accessibility because of not having any roads to connect the village. There was not much infrastructure developed in the village. It was not having any SHGs, Gram Sabha or any other institution. There are 128 families all of which belongs to Schedule Tribes and 90% of the families lie below poverty line. Main occupation of the local people was either agriculture or sale of forest products. Due to lack of any water conservation structures, the agriculture was practiced only in one season and the farmers use to grow paddy only. This has provided food security for 3 to 6 months.

Under Jharkhand Tribal Development Program, Jan Jagran Kendra identified the village in the year 2007. Initially, Gram Sabha was formed and made functional and different committees are formed. Further, women empowerment is ensured through assuring equal participation of the women in the Gram Sabha. Women are formed into SHGs which are provided trainings on fishery and Jute products. The SHGs are provided Rs 10,000 each from the program and after grading they are also provided loan from the bank. Under Watershed Development, 2 ponds are constructed and 2 are repaired, 2 canals are constructed and one link road is made for the connectivity of the village. Plantation is done on the waste land. BPL families are provided with duckery, poultry and piggery. Sahiyya is chosen and trained and health camps are organized on monthly basis for free diagnosis and medicines. The farmers are provided with the training and support of tools, techniques and seeds for agriculture of different produces. Seeds for fishery are provided and fishery is being practiced in the village.

Presently, the scene of the village has changed completely. The village is well connected with the city and women are practicing their power equal to men. All the children are going to school. Farmers are practicing different variety of agriculture products and are assured with 12 months of Food Security. The village is having different institutions and infrastructure as per their need. The villagers now do not need any support from outside and the need is assessed and overcome through participatory decision in Gram Sabha.

After augmenting natural resource management through watershed, JJK initiated agriculture productivity enhancement programme in several areas of Jharkhand in the financial year 2011-2012 in order to further enhance agricultural income with large no. of tribal community.

The areas where APE is being implemented belongs to Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Bokaro district. The project focuses on following five main components of agriculture enhancement; reducing cost, mitigating risk, increasing productivity, value addition and market linkages with an aim to increase incomes of farmers especially those that are small and marginal.

cover in the project areas leading to improve productivity of land. Under this programme, wastelands are developed in an integrated manner based on village micro watershed plans. The plan is developed with the participation of local people in regard to their needs. JJK has gained a high degree of technical competence in constructing cost effective water harvesting structures and community mobilization.

Agriculture Productivity Enhancement

Institutions for Watershed Development 162 village level institutions in 31 villages of Hazaribagh and Boakro Dist of Jharkhand consisting of 10- Watershed committee, 10 water Association, 83 user’s Group, 62 Watershed Development group and 02 WDT are involved in managing and implementation of our efforts with regard of irrigation system. These water management groups resolve the water issue in their villages, mange the irrigation system so that each entire farmer could get the water on time and adequacy for irrigation and other requirement.

Watershed DevelopmentJJK has carried out Dry land management of more than 10000 hectares of land. The operations included plantation, development of grazing land and various water management interventions. Canals and Contour Bunds are constructed for the improvement of the irrigation facilities. Watershed Structures are also developed.

Irrigation development Management
