TWO VERSES TO KEEP IN MIND THROUGHOUT THE

LESSONCol. 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do

all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

2 John 9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not

in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC?

TWO KINDS: VOCAL ~ “Music made or rendered by the

human voice.”

MECHANICAL ~ “Music made or rendered by a man made device.”

Which Kind of Music is Authorized for the Worship of God TODAY?

Page 8: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

DOES IT MATTER HOW ONE WORSHIPS GOD?

Was God Pleased with the Worship of Cain?

Genesis 4:3-7 So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. 4) And Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; 5) but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. 6) Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7) If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not so well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”

DOES IT MATTER HOW ONE WORSHIPS GOD?

Was God Pleased with the Worship of Nadab and Abihu?

Leviticus 10:1-2 “Now Nadab & Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective fire pans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it & offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. (2) And fire came out from the presence of the LORD & consumed them, and they died before the LORD.”

DOES IT MATTER HOW ONE WORSHIPS GOD?

Was God Pleased with the Worship of The Pharisees?

Matthew 15:7-9 “You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you saying, 8 BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9 BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.”

Matthew 15:12-14 “Then the disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?” 13) But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be rooted up. 14) Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP NEGATIVE VIEW:

1. NOT ENTERTAINMENT. Galatians 1:10 “For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond servant of Christ.”

2. NOT A DISPLAY OF TALENT IN SINGING OR PRAYING, ETC. Romans 12:3 “For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God allotted to each a measure of faith.”

Page 12: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP POSITIVE VIEW:

1. TO HONOR GOD. 1Corinthians 10:31 “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

2. TO COMFORT, ENCOURAGE & EDIFY. 1 Corinthians 14:31 “For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted.

JESUS SAID WORSHIP WOULD CHANGE:

John 4:19-24

The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet, 20) Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21) Jesus said to her, Woman believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. 22) You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23) But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24) God is a spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth.”

Page 14: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

SAMARITIAN WOMAN CONCERNED ABOUT PLACE OF WORSHIP…

VS.20 JESUS SETS FORTH 3 IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. The Jews were right. Vs.22• Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for

salvation is of the Jews. 2. Time coming when even Jewish worship would

change Vs.21• Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh,

when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

3. Acceptable worship in “spirit and truth.” Vs.23,24• But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers

shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. [24] God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

THIS WAS THE SUBJECT OF PROPHECY

• Hebrews 8:6-13• But now hath he obtained a more excellent

ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. [7] For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. [8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Page 16: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

THOUGHT CONTINUES…

• [10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: [11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. [12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. [13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Page 17: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

CHRISTIANS TAUGHT TO “SING” IN WORSHIP:

“Sang a hymn and went out” Matthew 26:30

“Prayed and sang” Acts 16:25 “Sing unto thy name” Romans 15:9 “Sing with the spirit” 1 Cor.14:15 “Sing and make melody” Eph. 5:19 “Sing with grace in heart” Col.3:16 “Sing in …the church” Hebrews 2:12 “Let him sing psalms” James 5:13

Page 18: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

CONSIDER GOD’S WAY:

WHEN WE SING:Col. 3:16-17

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. [17] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name

of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. 1. We express our “thankfulness” to God through this

method of praise.2. We “teach” and “admonish” one another.3. And the instrument that is used for all of this is the

“heart”.

Page 19: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

NOTICE PASSAGES WHERE HEART IS USED AS THE

INSTRUMENT: Matthew 13:15 “FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS

BECOME DULL, AND WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I SHOULD HEAL THEM.”

Mark 12:30 “AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.”

2 Corinthians 9:7 “LET EACH ONE DO JUST AS HE HAS PURPOSED IN HIS HEART; NOT GRUDGINGLY OR UNDER COMPULSION; FOR GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER.”

THE ORIGIN OF MECHANICAL MUSIC IN WORSHIP UNTO

GOD!

“ The organ is said to have been first introduced into church music

by…

Pope Vitalian I in the year 666 A.D.”

SCHAFF – HERZOG

ENCYCLOPEDIA

“The Greek word (Psallo) is applied among the Greeks of modern times exclusively to sacred music, which in the Eastern church has never been any other than VOCAL, instrumental music being unknown in that church, as it was in the primitive church…”

Page 22: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

SCHAFF-HERZOG ENCYCLOPEDIA

“In the Greek church the organ never came into use. But after the 8th century it became more and more common in the Latin Church; not, however, without the opposition from the side of the Monks…”

STATEMENTS OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF THE PAST!

Martin Luther: “An organ in the worship of God is an ensign of Baal.” (Lutheran)

John Calvin: “Musical instruments in the celebration of praises to God would be no more suitable than the burning of incense and the restoration of other shadows of the law.” (Presb.)

John Wesley: “I have no objections to instruments in our chapel provided they are neither seen nor heard.” (Meth.)

Charles Spurgeon: “I’d as soon pray to God with machinery as to sing to God with machinery.” (Baptist)

Page 24: WHEN DID THE UNAUTHORIZED BECOME ACCEPTABLE TO GOD?

THREE REASONS WHY WE DO NOT USE INSTUMENTS OF MUSIC IN OUR WORSHIP…

1. Jesus through the Holy Spirit did NOT authorize their use.

2. Jesus through the Holy Spirit DID tell us how to worship. He said “SING!”

3. Christians of the first century UNDERSTOOD His instruction and so CAN we!
