Wheeler Heights Public School Bicycle and Scooter Policy It is important that parents and carers understand they are responsible for how their child travels to and from school.

1. Parents and guardians are responsible for instructing and supporting their child in road safety. Children need to understand and follow the NSW road rules. This includes the pedestrian’s right of way on footpaths. All bikes should have a bell and the bell should be used as a warning when approaching pedestrians.

2. Children must correctly wear a Standards Australia approved helmet at all times when in control of a bicycle or scooter.

3. Bicycles and scooters ridden to school must be in good condition and in safe working order.

4. Students are to dismount from their bicycle or scooter before entering the school grounds.

5. Bicycles and scooters are to be kept in the designated locations. Bicycles are to be walked to the designated bicycle racks. Bicycles are to be locked with an appropriate device supplied by the bicycle owner. Scooters are not to be played with in the playground and are to be stored in the designated place.

6. Bicycles, scooters and helmets are brought to school and stored on site at the owner’s risk. The school accepts no responsibility for damage, loss or theft.

7. The riding of bicycles and scooters is not permitted in the school grounds during or after school hours.

8. Parents will be notified if their child does not adhere to the school’s Bicycle and Scooter Policy.

9. Students that do not follow the rules may not be allowed to bring their bicycle or scooter to school.

Wheeler Heights Public School Bicycle and Scooter Policy (Updated 1.3.2018)

The following information relates to helmet safety. It is provided for general information only. Please check to ensure all information is current. Protect your head

Bicycle riders are required by law to wear an approved helmet securely fitted and fastened. In NSW there are

no exemptions from wearing an approved bicycle helmet.

Research shows that helmets reduce head injuries by up to 74 per cent in crashes with motor vehicles. A

bicycle helmet that is not correctly fitted and fastened does not provide enough protection in a crash. Helmet standard

Approved bicycle helmets have stickers or labels certifying that they meet the Australian and New Zealand

standard (AS/NZS 2063) and have passed stringent safety tests. Correct helmet fit Always wear a helmet when you ride and make sure you fit the helmet correctly. • The helmet should fit comfortably and securely when the straps are fastened • The straps should not be twisted, nor cover the ears. When done up correctly the straps should

provide a snug fit over the ears and under the chin. • Choose a bright coloured helmet so other road users can see you.

Replace your helmet if: • it’s been dropped onto a hard surface or involved in a crash or severe fall • you see any cracks in the foam • the straps look worn or frayed

Ensure the straps join in a ‘V’ just below your ears.

Allow two fingers between the helmet strap and your chin.
