Bailey’s Stardust is a landmark exhibition of portraits by one of the world’s most distinguished and distinctive photographers, David Bailey.

Over 250 images, personally selected and printed by Bailey, will be presented thematically across a series of contrasting rooms and will illustrate the extraordinary range of subjects that he has captured throughout his career: actors, writers, musicians, filmmakers, designers, models, artists and people encountered on his travels; many of them famous, some anonymous, all of them unforgettable.

The Great War in Portraits27 February – 15 June 2014Porter Gallery

In viewing the First World War through images of the many individuals involved, The Great War in Portraits looks at the radically different roles, experiences, and, ultimately, destinies, of those caught up in the conflict.

Setting the scene in 1914, the splendor and formality of portraits of national leaders are contrasted with a press photograph of Gavrilo Princip, the 19-year-old assassin of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The narrative unfolds with power-portraits of commanders Haig, Foch and Hindenburg, asserting military authority, which are displayed together with dignified pictures of their troops by artists including Orpen, Sickert and Nevinson. Finally, images of heroes and medal-winners are shown alongside the wounded and the fallen, representing the bitter-sweet nature of a war in which valour and selfless endeavour were qualified by disaster and suffering.

From paintings and drawings to photography and film, the exhibition considers a wide range of visual responses to ‘the war to end all wars’, culminating in the visual violence of Expressionist masterpieces by Beckmann and Kirchner.

Room 29: case displayBernard Partridge Character Sketches A focus on the art of Sir Bernard Partridge (1861–1945) before he became a cartoonist for Punch. Room 32The Naval OfficersSir Arthur Stockdale Cope’s large-scale group portrait of the senior British naval officers of the Great War has not been seen in decades. Following a successful public appeal for funding, this extraordinary painting has been restored. To mark the centenary of the First World War it now returns to public view.From 10 May

Room 32Michael Peto Photographs: Mandela to McCartneyHungarian-born photojournalist Michael Peto is celebrated in this display organised in collaboration with the University of Dundee. From March 1949 onwards, Peto’s work was regularly published in the Observer. His subjects from the 1950s and 1960s include Samuel Beckett, Nelson Mandela, Iris Murdoch, and Rudolph Nureyev with Margot Fonteyn.Until 1 June

Room 33Starring Vivien Leigh: A Centenary CelebrationThis centenary display coincides with the 75th anniversary of Gone With The Wind, for which Vivien Leigh was awarded her first Oscar, and a career which included a second Oscar for her role as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.Until 20 July

This spring, Late Shift focuses on our two major exhibitions: Bailey’s Stardust and The Great War in Portraits. We celebrate all things Bailey with an exploration of his work. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the man himself in conversation with Tim Marlow on Thursday 10 April. Snap Shot, our Late Shift Extra on Friday 28 March, looks at photography.

The First World War and its legacy will be discussed in depth by speakers including Kate Adie, Sir Max Hastings and Jeremy Paxman. In Parenthesis, our Late Shift Extra on Friday 16 May, takes inspiration from David Jones’ seminal poem about the war and is a collaboration with English National Ballet, who will perform a site-specific new work around the Gallery.

Over three Fridays in March, we will be investigating the complex nature of portrait in film with a series curated by Cinematograph Cinema Club. To commemorate the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare, Sir Richard Eyre talks about his experience of staging Shakespeare on stage and screen.

Don’t forget our regular free Late Shift activities, such as live music and drawing in the Gallery every Friday evening and the pop-up bar for an after work drink.

Photo historian Anne Braybon tells the story.

11.00 – 17.00 Workshop Memory Space £100/£80 This weekend workshop led by artist Grace Adam explores The Great War in Portraits, focussing on the idea of preserving and storing memories. Grace will guide you as you draw, paint and work with found objects and mixed media, creating an individual response that takes you from visual research to finished outcome.

11.00 The Portrait Choir Performance ‘Anonymity’ an exploration of the loneliness and isolation experienced during war times. This multisensory event will combine evocative wartime sights and sounds, excerpts from Handel’s War Oratorios, and readings from letters and poems written by soldiers from the First World War. The Portrait Choir will be joined by a team of actors and period instrument ensemble, New Century Baroque. The Portrait Choir is supported by Hani Farsi and The Mohamed S. Masters of Photography is supported by the Bernard Lee Schwartz Foundation in memory of photographer Bern Schwartz. 19.00 Lecture ‘Burning the Box of Beautiful Things’: The English Cultural Revolution of the Early ‘60s Between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s, English culture changed rapidly and fundamentally. Professor Alex Seago examines the edgy and exciting cultural milieu within which David Bailey’s early career developed.
