Since opening in 2016, Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (NMC) is proud to have offered a diverse selection of experiences for the general public—and we’re just getting started! This spring/summer season demonstrates our continued growth and commitment to enriching the lives of Albertans, visitors from across Canada and beyond through music. This season, live music fans will find an array of sounds to enjoy, thanks to the launch of Alberta Spotlight, a concert series that shines a light on sought-after regional talent; and Crossroads, a celebration of Indo-Canadian music and culture; along with pop-up shows announced weekly through our online listings at studiobell.ca. Live music will return to the King Eddy during the Calgary Stampede with another showcase of great local and regional talent. Plans are underway to permanently open the Eddy for regular live music in 2018, so stay tuned for more details. Creating accessibility at Studio Bell and working with community partners remains an ongoing priority for NMC, and we’ll open up our doors this season to Sled Island, JazzYYC, Alberta Ballet and other community partners to provide a variety of music offerings and contribute to the vibrancy of Calgary’s East Village. For students and artists, Studio Bell is open for discovery, from summer camps and school programs that use music as an entry point to learning, to creative artist residencies that offer the use of our historic collection and one-of-a-kind recording studios, and mentorship and skill-building workshops, including the RBC Master in Residence program.
For music buffs, our national mandate to celebrate Canada’s contributions to music will continue to be realized this season through two new temporary exhibitions. These contributions will recognize the contributions of Hall of Fame inductees Barenaked Ladies, Neil Young, Paul Brandt, Bruce Cockburn, Beau Dommage, Stéphane Venne, and Harvey Gold thanks to important partnership with the Juno Awards (CARAS), the Canadian Country Music Association and the Canadian Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Meanwhile our Backstage Pass Tours pull back the curtain on even more of NMC’s vast collection and artist spaces, including access to the legendary Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Choose your experience and begin your exploration of music at Studio Bell.
Amplifying the love, sharing, and understanding of music.

Welcome to Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre
A year ‘round music festival.4
NMC is more than just a museum. Our innovative approach to what a museum can be is reflected in our exhibitions and in our visitor experience. We are an artist incubator, a concert presenter, and a repository for Canada’s music legacy.
Our goal is to create a vibrant home for music in Canada, where we can tell diverse stories that explore our country’s distinct music communities. Our first permanent exhibition features contributions from over 200 voices across Canada that span multiple genres and cultures, showcasing Canadian legends and rising stars.
Anchored by NMC’s renowned collection, artifacts from the Canadian Hall of Fame, and the fascinating stories of music in Canada, our exhibitions are innovative, accessible, and exciting spaces for visitors to experience, and enjoy.

As one of Canada’s most unique and acclaimed international music exports of the past 30 years, the Barenaked Ladies carved out a legacy with their irreverent sense of humour and blend of pop, folk, alt-rock, and even rap. As the 2018 inductees into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, NMC is proud to commemorate their induction with a special exhibition in the Milestones gallery at Studio Bell.

This guided tour of Studio Bell’s artist spaces provides a behind-the-scenes look at three world-class recording facilities that house historic consoles—including the Olympic Studios console, a Trident A-Range console, and the legendary Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—and a collection of musical instruments spanning 450 years of music innovation and technology.
Step inside the “Sistine Chapel of rock n’ roll,” where classic albums like Led Zeppelin IV and Exile on Main Street came to life. Catch a glimpse at the working spaces where artists make magic happen, and hear the stories behind notable artifacts as a trained musician offers demonstrations. Gain insight into some of NMC’s most treasured items—from the earliest instruments in the NMC Collection, like the 16th century Trasuntino Harpsichord; to modern electronics, like TONTO, considered to be the “holy grail” of synthesizers; to the extremely rare Hammond Novachord (only six functioning Novachords remain in the world!); to the largest item in the NMC Collection, the King Eddy.

Steven Page’s songs are etched in the canon of Canadian music. For 20 years, Page was one of the principal songwriters and lead singers of the Barenaked Ladies (BNL), one of the most extraordinary success stories in Canadian music, before leaving to pursue a solo career. Through the generous support of the RBC Foundation, a select group of emerging Canadian songwriters will get the chance to workshop with Page to refine their work and learn about the craft of composition and lyric writing. Fans of Page will get the opportunity to hear the result of that work with a Songwriters’ Circle, and learn more about Page’s journey— from his humble beginnings crammed in a Speaker’s Corner booth, to his international breakthrough with BNL, onto his current focus as a solo singer-songwriter.
