Creating a System Restore USB DriveWindows XP or Higher and a 4 GB or larger USB Flash Drive Required

After backing up your system, create a System Restore USB drive using a free utility called Rufus. You can use a commercially available USB flash drive (4 GB or greater memory required), or you can use the System Restore USB Drive that came with your E3 engine. A separate computer running Windows XP or higher (VMs supported) with an Internet connection is required.

To create a System Restore USB drive:

1 In the extracted System Restore folder, locate the file call rufus-1.x.x.exe and make sure it is located on the same computer as the VENUE System Restore ISO file.

2 Double-click the file to launch it.

3 Insert your USB drive into an available USB port on your computer.

4 In Rufus, do the following:

• Choose the USB drive from the Device pop-up menu.

• Choose FAT32 from the File System pop-up menu.

• (Optional) Enter a name for the USB drive in the Volume label field.

5 Under Format options, do the following:

• Choose Quick Format.

• Choose Create a bootable disk using.

• Click the disk icon, browse to the VENUE 4.5.3.xxx_Re-store.iso and click Open.

Using ISO: VENUE 4.5.x.xxx_Restore.iso should appear at the bottom of the Rufus window.

6 Click Start, then click OK. Rufus begins to format the USB drive and progress is indicated on-screen.

7 When formatting is completed (indicated by Done at the bottom of the Rufus window), click Close and proceed to Installing VENUE Software.

The following procedure will delete all existing files on the USB drive. Be sure to backup any data before proceeding.

You can create the System Restore drive on the E3 itself by exiting to the Desktop, (enable Config mode, then Ctrl-click Shut Down), transferring the VENUE 4.5 ISO file to the E3, installing Rufus on the E3, then following the USB drive formatting procedure. When the drive is formatted, click the VENUE icon to return to the VENUE software screen, then proceed to Installing VENUE Software.

Installing VENUE SoftwareAfter you have created the VENUE System Restore drive, install VENUE software. You can choose to either update or restore your system software.

To install VENUE software:

1 Make sure outputs, speakers, and power amps are muted.

2 Connect the keyboard and mouse directly to the E3 engine, and make sure a display is attached to your E3 and is powered on.

3 Insert the USB drive containing the VENUE System Restore software into a USB port on the E3 engine.

4 Put your system in Config mode, go to the Options > System page and choose Shut Down.

5 Power on your E3, then press and hold F10 on the keyboard until the Upgrade/Restore dialog appears.

6 Do one of the following to update or restore system software:

System Update To update the system software while keeping any Show files and Preset files on the system, press “u” (lower-case). When the Update confirmation dialog appears, press Shift+U (upper-case) on your keyboard to proceed. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin installation.

– or –

System Restore To fully restore the system (completely removing all files on the system), press “r” (lower-case). Or, press “P” (upper-case) to return to the previous screen. When the Restore confirmation dialog appears, press Shift+R on your keyboard to proceed. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the System Restore operation.

When finished updating or restoring the system software, the system restarts and firmware updates begin.

7 Go to the Options > Devices page to view the progress of the firmware updates. Progress is shown for each connected device. The encoder displays on the S3 also indicate that a firmware update is in progress.

8 After all devices have been updated, power cycle each connected device.

9 Proceed to Activating Windows.

In shared input configurations, when updating or restoring your system software make sure only one E3 engine is powered on at a time, or that E3 engines are not connected together in an audio network either directly, via a network switch, or via media converters.

The keyboard and mouse must be connected to the E3 engine when performing a system upgrade or restore.

Some models of USB keyboards require repeated pressing of F10 (holding it down in between pressings) to register.

If you are installing VENUE 4.5.3 from VENUE 4.1.3 or lower, you must choose the Restore option.

Do not power down any device while a firmware update is in progress.

While the S3 firmware update is in progress, VENUE software may report the S3 as “Lost.” Before proceeding, wait until the S3 update is complete, indicated by the Avid logos reappearing in the encoder displays, or by channel data appearing on the S3. The S3 firmware update may take up to 15 minutes.

To ensure proper performance for AVB recording/playback with a system running VENUE 4.5.3, any computer previously con-nected to a system running VENUE 4.1.3 or lower must be restarted before attempting a new recording or playback.

Activating WindowsAfter installing VENUE software, Avid recommends that you immediately activate the Windows 8 operating system from Micro-soft. Windows 8 is part of the VENUE 4.5.3 installation on your E3 engine, and it must be activated separately from VENUE soft-ware. To activate Windows 8, the E3 engine must be physically connected to an Internet source (Ethernet cable required; Wi-Fi not supported).

To authorize Windows 8 on your E3 engine:

1 Connect an Ethernet cable from your Internet source (router or modem) to the ECx port on the back of your E3 engine.

2 If necessary power on your E3, and in the on-screen dialog prompting you to authorize Windows click Activate.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions to activate your copy of Windows. Activation is complete when the activation window on-screen shows Product activated successfully.

4 Press any key on the keyboard to return to the VENUE software screen., then proceed to Installing Plug-Ins.

You have 30 days from the date of installation to activate the Windows 8 operating system on your E3. You must also re-activate whenever your perform a full system restore of your VENUE software.

Installing Plug-InsAfter installing VENUE software, make sure to download and install the latest S3L-X Plug-Ins installer from your Avid account. The updated plug-ins provide critical bug fixes and other improvements for VENUE 4.5.3.

Downloading and Transferring the Plug-Ins Installer

To download and transfer the S3L Plug-Ins Installer to a USB drive:

1 Make sure there is enough free space on your USB drive to accommodate all the software. Do not use your VENUE System Re-store USB Drive to store plug-in installers.

2 Format your USB drive to the exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS file system using Disk Utility (Mac) or Windows Disk Management (Windows).

3 If you have not done so already, go to https://www.avid.com/account, log in to your Avid account, and do the following:

• Click My Products and Subscriptions.

• Click VENUE 4.5 Software Upgrade, then click Show to expand the list.

• Click the link for S3L-X Plug-Ins Installer to download the software to your computer.

4 Unzip the downloaded ZIP file.

5 In the unzipped file, locate the “AAX Plug-Ins” folder.

6 Copy the entire “AAX Plug-Ins” folder to the top (root) level of the USB drive.

Reinstalling Plug-Ins

To reinstall plug-ins:

1 Insert the USB drive containing the S3L-X Plug-In Installer into an available USB port on the E3 engine.

2 Go to Options > Plug-Ins. The following two lists are shown:

Plug-Ins to Install This list shows available plug-in installers. At the top of the list is the Device selector, which provides a pop-up menu of available media sources. Plug-In installers are stored locally after plug-in installation, and appear as available items when Previous Installs is selected from the Device selector. This lets you re-install plug-ins without the original plug-in installer.

Installed Plug-Ins This list shows all plug-ins already installed on the system. The plug-ins shown in plain text are available to process audio. Plug-Ins listed in italics are disabled and unavailable.

3 In the Plug-Ins to Install list, click the device selector pop-up menu and choose the USB drive containing the updated plug-ins.

4 Select a plug-in from the Plug-Ins to Install list on the left by doing any of the following:

• Click to select a single installer.

• Shift-click to select multiple installers.

• Control-click to select or de-select installers one at a time.

5 Click Install to install the selected plug-ins, clicking Accept in any dialog boxes that appear during installation. Once installed, plug-ins appear in the Installed Plug-Ins list on the right.

6 Repeat as necessary to reinstall all plug-ins needed on the system.

Avid highly recommends updating to the latest versions of plug-ins to ensure the best possible performance.

Plug-Ins cannot be installed using the USB ports on the S3 control surface.

The plug-ins listed under Console are automatically installed when you perform a system update or system restore, and do not need to be reinstalled. Use these installers to reinstall any of the core plug-ins for troubleshooting purposes.

If a plug-in installer from an Avid Development partner does not appear in the Plug-Ins to Install list, you need to install the plug-in manually. Installing Plug-Ins Manually

Installing Plug-Ins ManuallyIf you are installing a third-party plug-in and it does not appear in the Plug-Ins to Install list, it may not have a fully compatible VENUE installer and must be manually installed. This is required the first time you install the plug-in, and after upgrading or re-storing the system.

To install a plug-in manually:

1 Make sure all sound systems are shut down or muted.

2 Insert the USB drive with plug-in installers into an available USB port on the E3 engine.

3 Enter Config mode.

4 Go to the Options > System page, hold the Control key on the connected keyboard, and choose Shut Down.

5 Follow the instructions on-screen to exit to the Desktop.

6 Click the folder in the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen, and click Computer.

7 In the Computer window, copy the plug-in installer from the USB drive to the partition named User Data (D:).

8 Launch the plug-in installer application and follow any on-screen directions. If prompted to restart the system as part of the plug-in installation process, choose No to cancel, unless you have completed all manual plug-in installations. (Doing so will not harm the system, but will take longer, especially if you have multiple plug-ins to install manually.)

9 Quit the installer application.

10 Click the Return to VENUE shortcut on the desktop to re-launch the VENUE software. If prompted to restart the system, click Yes and wait for the system to restart.

11 Go to the Options page and click the Plug-Ins tab. Verify that the manually installed plug-in appears in the Installed Plug-Ins list.

A plug-in without a compatible VENUE installer may still be compatible with your VENUE system. Consult the plug-in man-ufacturer for compatibility information.

Installing ECx Ethernet Control Host SoftwareAfter installing VENUE software and plug-ins, you must install the latest version of ECx Ethernet Control host software on your E3 engine. The latest installers for ECx are located in your Avid account.

To reinstall ECx host software:

1 Ensure 80MB of free space is available on the USB drive.

2 If you have not done so already, go to https://www.avid.com/US/account/orientation, log into the Avid account you used to activate your S3L system software, and do the following:

• Click My Products and Subscriptions.

• Click S3L Software Bundle then click Show to expand the list

• Click the link for VENUE ECx 4.0 Installer to download the software to your computer.

3 Locate the ECx Ethernet Control Software folder and copy the entire folder to the top (root) level of your USB drive.

4 Insert the USB drive into an available USB port on your E3 engine.

5 Place the system into Config Mode.

6 In VENUE, go to the Options > System page.

7 Click Update.

8 Do one of the following:

• Click Install.

– or –

• If more than one VENUE software installer is located on the USB drive, click Next to select the ECx Ethernet Control Soft-ware installer and click Install.

9 Click Update and follow the on-screen instructions. VENUE software restarts, and ECx is ready for use.

For further information on installing VNC client software and enabling and using ECx, see the ECx Ethernet Control Guide.

Loading and Converting Show FilesVENUE Show files can be opened on any VENUE system. VENUE software loads and automatically converts Show files created with lower versions of VENUE software. It does not automatically convert the Show file saved on disk. The saved version of a 4.1.x or lower Show file can still be opened on a VENUE system running that lower version, if needed.

To load and convert a Show file:

1 Transfer the Show file to the system if it is not already present.

2 Enable Config Mode.

3 Go to the Filing page and click the Load tab.

4 In the Show Folders column, click the name of the Show Folder containing the show file you want to load.

5 In the Shows column, click the name of the Show file you want to load. The Show file version appears in the Info window.

6 Click the Load button.

VENUE software loads the file without affecting the saved Show file. Until you save the Show as a new file (or overwrite the orig-inal), the Show file will not be saved to disk in the newer format.

While the file is loading, VENUE software checks whether any saved data will have to be modified for the new file format.

Data ConversionShow files created with earlier versions of VENUE software will be converted to version 4.5.3 when loaded into a system running version 4.5.3. Conversion is necessary to support the new and changed features added in each release of VENUE software.

Backwards CompatibilityOpening VENUE 4.5.3 Show Files on Systems Running VENUE 2.x–4.1.x

Show files saved in VENUE software version 4.5.3 can be opened on any system running software versions 2.x or higher. How-ever, when opening a Show file created on a system using a higher version of VENUE onto a system using a lower version, features and functionality available in the higher version of the software that are stored with the Show file are ignored or unavailable.

New Features

Connecting Three EnginesYou can now connect up to three E3 engines together in one audio network to share the Stage inputs from up to four Stage 16 re-mote stage boxes. The following configurations support connections to three engines:

• Redundant Ring Network

• Non-Redundant Star Network (requires a qualified network switch)

In shared input configurations, each S3 in the audio network supports connections to one E3 engine and one Pro Tools computer. Each E3 engine in the network supports its own discrete ECx connection.

Redundant Ring Network No Ethernet Network Switch Requirement

Figure 1 shows three E3 engines connected to four Stage 16 remote stage boxes in a redundant ring network. Stage 16 analog inputs are shared between all E3s in the network. See Connecting a Redundant Ring Network for instructions.

Connecting a Redundant Ring Network

To connect S3L-X in a redundant ring network:

1 Connect a supported Ethernet cable from Network port A on each S3 control surface to Network port C on the corresponding E3 engine.

2 Daisy-chain the E3 engines together by connecting Ethernet cables between available Network ports on the E3 engines.

3 Connect an Ethernet cable from an available Network port on the first E3 engine (“FOH” in Figure 1) to Network port A on the first Stage 16.

4 Daisy-chain Stage 16s together by connecting Ethernet cables between available Network ports on the Stage 16s, always con-necting from port B to port A between devices.

5 (Redundant) From the last Stage 16 in the chain, connect an Ethernet cable from an available Network port to the last E3 engine in the E3 engine daisy-chain.

6 After making connections, power up all S3L-X system devices and assign S3 control surfaces and Stage 16 remote stage boxes to desired E3 engines in the network. See the VENUE | S3L-X System Guide for instructions.

7 (Optional) If you are connecting Pro Tools computers, proceed to Working with Multiple Pro Tools Computers in Shared In-put Configurations.

.

The numbered steps in the following procedure correspond to the circled numbers in Figure 1.

The S3 control surface must always be connected Network port C on the corresponding E3 engine.

If multiple Pro Tools systems are present, Avid recommends that you first connect, power on, and configure S3L-X system de-vices before connecting and configuring Pro Tools computers.

When using a Pro Tools computer, make sure to always connect the computer to port B on the S3 control surface, not to any E3 engines or Stage 16s.

Non-Redundant Star NetworkFigure 2 shows three E3 engines connected to four Stage 16 remote stage boxes in a non-redundant star network using a single AVB-capable network switch. Stage 16 analog inputs are shared between all E3s in the network. See Connecting a Non-Redun-dant Star Network for instructions.

For a list of Avid-qualified AVB capable switches visit www.avid.com/S3Lsupport.

Connecting a Non-Redundant Star Network

To connect S3L in an non-redundant star network:

1 Connect a supported Ethernet cable from Network port A on each S3 control surface to Network port C on the corresponding E3 engine.

2 Connect an Ethernet cable from an available Network port on each E3 to an available 10/100/1000 BASE-T Ethernet (RJ-45) port on the network switch.

3 Connect an Ethernet cable from an available Network port on each Stage 16 to an available 10/100/1000 BASE-T Ethernet (RJ-45) port on the network switch.

4 After making connections, do the following:

• Power on the network switch, and wait for at least 3 minutes until the device initializes.

• Power on all S3L-X system devices.

• Assign S3 control surfaces and Stage 16 remote stage boxes to desired E3 engines in the network. See the VENUE | S3L-X Sys-tem Guide for instructions.

5 (Optional) If you are connecting Pro Tools computers, proceed to Working with Multiple Pro Tools Computers in Shared In-put Configurations.

.

The numbered steps in the following procedure correspond to the circled numbers in Figure 2.

Working with Multiple Pro Tools Computers in Shared Input ConfigurationsWhen working with multiple Pro Tools computers in a shared input configuration, Avid strongly recommends you first connect, power on, and configure S3L-X system devices before connecting and configuring Pro Tools computers. The following procedure is only necessary the first time you pair a Pro Tools computer to a particular E3 engine.

To pair Pro Tools computers to the desired E3 engines:

1 Connect and power on all S3L-X devices, including any network switches and/or media converters, as described in the previous sections of this guide.

2 On each E3 engine in the audio network, do the following:

• Go to VENUE > Options > Devices, and if necessary assign an S3 control surfaces and any Stage 16s in the audio network as desired.

• Right-click the E3 engine and note the last four characters of the E3’s MAC address (each device in a network has its own unique MAC address). In the figure below, the last four characters of the MAC address are “9a:8e.”

• If desired, click Rename and give the E3 engine a unique name. You can include the last four characters of the MAC address in the E3’s name to make it easier to identify when connecting to Pro Tools.

• If necessary, go to VENUE > Options > Interaction and enable VENUE Link.

3 Connect an Ethernet cable from each Pro Tools computer to Network port B on the closest S3 control surface.

Do not connect your Pro Tools computers at this time.

Make sure Network port A on the S3 control surface is connected to Network port C on the corresponding E3 engine.

4 Do the following on each Pro Tools computer in the audio network:

• Power on the computer if necessary, then go to Applications > Utilities> Audio MIDI Setup.

• From the Window menu choose Show Network Device Browser. Each currently connected and powered-on E3 engine ap-pears in the Device list of the Network Device Browser with its default device name, which includes the last four characters of its MAC address.

• Locate the E3 Engine with the MAC address that matches the MAC address of the E3 engine to which you want to pair the Pro Tools computer, then click the checkbox to enable it. In the figure below, the last four characters of the MAC address of the desired E3 engine in the Network Device Browser are “9a:8e,” and match the MAC address of the E3 engine noted in step 2.

• Double-click the enabled E3 engine in the list and enter a unique name. If desired, give it the same name you gave to the E3 engine in the VENUE Options > Devices page.

5 Launch Pro Tools and do the following:

• If the Dashboard (Pro Tools 12 and higher) or the Quick Start dialog (Pro Tools 11.x and lower) appears, click Cancel.

• Go to Setup > Playback Engine.

• From the Playback Engine pop-up, choose the E3 you enabled and named in the Network Device Browser.

• Click OK.

Audio MIDI Setup > Network Device Browser showing the corresponding E3 engine enabled

Make sure only one device is enabled in the Device list. If multiple E3 engines are enabled, make sure to disable any undesired devices.

Audio MIDI Setup > Network Device Browser showing a renamed E3

For best performance and maximum stability, set the sample buffer size in Pro Tools to 1024 samples. Go to Setup > Playback Engine, and from the H/W Buffer Size pop-up choose 1024 Samples.

Using Fiber Optic Media ConvertersS3L-X systems now support qualified single and multi-mode Ethernet-to-fiber optic media converters to extend the distance of the connections between devices. You can place media converters between any S3L-X system devices.

Two converters are required for each connection between S3L-X devices. The converters are connected to S3L-X devices via Ethernet cables, and the two converters are connected to each other via fiber-optic cables. An example of a configuration using me-dia converters is shown in Figure 3.

Only use media converters with S3L systems wired in ring or daisy-chain network. Use of media converters with Ethernet switches (star networks) is not supported. Use of media converters between S3 control surfaces and Pro Tools is also not sup-ported.

For information on connecting and using your media converters, including maximum distances and supported fiber-optic connectors, see the documentation provided by the manufacturer. Visit www.avid.com/S3Lsupport for a list of qualified media converters. Only qualified media converters are supported.
