Plett mourns the loss of a great guy, Tim van Heerden, who was suddenly and tragically taken from us. Our thoughts and prayers are with all his friends and family. Garden Route hosts next SA Rally The Garden Route Rally, round six of the eight-event South African Rally Championship, takes place between George and Knysna this weekend and sees national championship motorsport return to the region for the first time in some 17 years. The rally will start from the new Garden Route Mall near George airport at 12:00 on Friday 26



August. The first day will consist of four gravel special stages, three of which will be in the Outeniqua for-ests, and a short tar stage at the overnight stop in Knysna. Saturday's action starts at 08:00 from Simola Estate in Knysna and the route will include a repeat of Friday's three forest special stages plus an additional forest stage that will be run twice. The total distance of the 10 stages is 170 km. "This is the second all-new event in this year's championship and I think the competitors will find this one particularly interesting," said route director Joe Fourie. "The last time we rallied in this area was in the Volkswagen Rally in the early 1990s, when we started in George and finished in Port Elizabeth. The roads we have selected for the special stages will be completely new to the competitors and the whole event should be quite unlike anything they've experienced before. Although we had to change some of the route as a result of heavy rains in the area, it's all looking good for the weekend." A strong 18-car field will do battle in the premier Super 2000 class for four-wheel-drive cars and is headed by current overall and Super 2000 drivers' championship leader Conrad Rautenbach of Zimbabwe. He will again be accompanied by

French co-driver Nicholas Klinger,

who does not score points because he competes with a French licence. A total of 11 competitors will contest the newly-named Two-Wheel-Drive Championship (previously known as the Junior Championship) for Super 1600 and Super 1400 cars. Heading the entries are Super 1600 and overall Two-Wheel-Drive Championship leaders Craig Trott and Robbie Coetzee (Total Toyota RunX). Leading the Super 1400 class are the all-woman crew of Megan Verlaque and Lirene du Plessis (BP VW Polo) with Megan partnered on this event by Hilton Auffray. It was great to have a crowd like that in Kwanokuthula stadium at night midweek. Your enthusiasm gave us an extra kick, your support makes us strong. Each and every one of you made a huge difference, many thanks to Bitou Mayor & Deputy Mayor for making sure the game take,s place in kwano. Also special thanks to Serict & Japhta (SAFA Plett) and all soccer teams in Plett for making the night such a huge success. On Loosing 4 - 0, my team got beaten 4-0 ( and we were unlucky not to score goal ) but the thing that I wanted out of my players was the ability to keep playing, not to let their hands go down, to keep their positional shape and above all realise that, sometimes, some teams are better than us. Lose with grace, take the positive out of the game and move on, all of which they did. Now I know losing 4-0 hurts (I know because I’ve been there) nobody likes to lose and every body likes to win, the trick is to learn from both experiences. It,s also worth remembering that the players probably don't beat them-selves up over defeat like the coaches do. It is easy for some of them to blame the coaches tactics. Many a time after a loss I’ll be walking miserably back home dissecting the game and wondering what we could have done differently (why I choose A over B) and my daughter will look at me with a smile on her face and say “ can I have a fizzy sweet?” like nothing matters in the world. We start the season on Saturday 03 September 2011, when we take on one of the Cape Town sides, hopefully Cape Town All Stars, this time in Newhorizon sports ground. We are ready for the challenge, I want to promise you we will give everything we got to make the people of Bitou very proud of us. I wont entertain the prophets of the doom, who say we wont survive in

the Vodacom League, we will get releceted. I believe in this team and the boys are hungry for success, lets pack the Newhorizons stadium. Lets get it rocking and rolling. Letter via the Editor LAND AND LAND CLAIMS. What I have never been able to understand in any Country, not just South Africa, is that the land does not belong to the Country but belong to individuals or companies. If one thinks about it, the only fair way for all is where there is no such thing as land ownership but one has the right to lease land from the State. This includes residential housing, factories, farms, mines etc.. A fair rent, not exorbitant, is paid to the State on an annual basis and is based upon the value of the land, whether it be residential, business, farming etc. Residential houses would be sold on the value of the property and improvements not including any land value but would state the annual State rental for the land. Leases would be for an indefinite period but should one default on the annual payments the State has the right to terminate such lease. With this system being implemented, there could never be any land claims as no one

To implement this system would require huge international loans for the State to purchase all land from present land owners at a rate set down by fair arbitration. This value would be much cheaper than present land values as the land owners would not be losing the right to live, farm or mine on the land, only ownership and the State would recover the money in rental and pay back the international loans from the leases on every piece of land currently under private ownership. I have purposely used the word State and not Government as Government infers corrupt politicians. Since writing the draft of this letter last month, I was discussing it with a friend in Natal and he tells me that what I have suggested is in fact in operation in Italy. Letter via the Editor Some issues back, there appeared a letter written by “G & S” asking for information on the statue of a falcon on the arm of a falconer situated in the centre of the parkland commonly known as Longstone Park. This bronze sculpture, entitled “Spirit of Zimbabwe”, sculpted by Gillian Kaufman (a famous sculptress of her time) was donated to the town of Plettenberg Bay by Thomas Witheridge Gubb, who had come to live here, on condition that there would be no building on that piece of land. None of Thomas Witheridge’s family can tell me why he named it “Spirit of Zimbabwe”. Whatever his inspiration, I would imagine that it had something to do with embodying the spirit of the place (perhaps the Zimbabwe Ruins?) that he loved so much and had left to live in Plettenberg Bay. Thank you from Jetski Racing Group On behalf of the SAJSBA committee I would like to thank all who was involved in the organization of the Wedge Classic. The members of the Jet Ski racing really enjoyed being a part of this boarding tournament. Overall it was a great event full of fun, sun and some enthralling racing entertainment, the venue proved to be perfect for the national series competition and was enjoyed by all our members. The hotels were very accommodating and the stay was very enjoyable, especially the party penthouse. Everyone whom we came in contact with was very friendly and welcomed us to the beautiful seaside destination of Plettenberg Bay. Vrouemaand in Kranshoek Vroue maand het heelwat interessante gebeurtenisse opgelewer. Vroegeggend 9 Augustus 2011 het die vroue van Lighthouse ministries bymekaar gekom. Net om te mingle en te deel in die weg en wee van Jesus Christus met ‘n baie dinamiese gasspreker, Lenie Jansen het die oggend uitgerek en tot ‘n aangename middag gevorder. Die dames is gestig en opgerig weer huiswaarts so om en by 4 uur. Verder af by die G.O. sentrum om en by vieruur het Jean Sparg en ‘n paar vroue van kwano by die vroue van die Griekwa Vereniging aangesluit. Hier het die dames vergas met die noe en maar hulle groot geraak het. Veral die hoe Mev. Betty May het die besoekers ingelig oor die aankoms en herkoms van die Griekwas. Oor die tradisie en kultuur is baie staaltjies vertel. Nou by die Griekwas is daar vir elke staaltjie ‘n gesang. Interessant nê? Die Hakkervillers en die straatmense hier het seker die gesang “Bring Them In”, gehoor. Vandaar die intog in Kranshoek. Die dag is gesange oor en weer uitgeruil. Die Xhosa vrouens het ook van hul tradisionele liedjies gesing. Daarvandaan is die besoekers na die touriste attraksies, die olifante by Oumatjie. By hul terugkoms is almal by die Crafters coffee shop met lekkernye getrakteer. ‘n Heerlike agtermiddag vir die groepie vrouens wat hulle verwonder het aan die kunstigheid by die craftshop. Op Donderdag 11 Augustus 2011 was Jean Sparg weereens in Kranshoek by die biblioteek. Hier het sy die vrouens van Protea bejaarde groep toegespreek oor die fynbos in Bitou. Voorwaar is leersame praatjie vir die oumense op hulle ouderdom. Veral vir die ouers soos Jean met die groen vingers. Hier het hulle vir die eerste keer gehoor van die Bitou en Keurbooms plantjie. Soos Jean gesê het, “Die Bitou

bossie met sy geel blaar kan jy orals plant.” Jean is gewese bibliotekaresse was baie beindruk met Kranshoek biblioteek se betrokkenheid. Josephine en haar kollegas is voorwaar ‘n voorslag by Kranshoek biblioteek. Die opgehol het afgeloop met van die oumense wat ook sommer nuwe lidmate geword het. bakkie travelling behind her all the way from Piesangs Valley Road. Just near the dump the bakkie suddenly sped up and overtook her and something was shot at the window on the drivers side shattering her window. She and her son managed to duck down but were covered in glass as the whole window had been shattered.. She wanted to stop but her son told her to just keep driving as maybe this was a hijacking. She 'put foot' and drove home as quickly as she could. She did report the incident to the police as well as contacting the Knysna Plett Herald and was informed that this was the third incident that had taken place within a ten mile radius. I feel everyone should now take care as this could have resulted in a serious accident, besides which all the people in the car had a nasty fright. Please people, be vigilant and just take care and definitely report anything suspicious to the police. Rise and Shine Playgroup Project working grassroots crèches in the Bitou Area Bukelwa Reports... The Department of Social Development highlights the importance of protecting, caring for and stimulating children as the result, they are coming up with numerous strategies to ensure this takes place. Arise and Shine Enrichment Centre was officially launched at Kwanokuthula in April 2011. Giving us the background of Rise and Shine Playgroup Project, Thirza Jacobsen said Lumen Christi Creche became aware of the growing number of ladies caring for groups of young children in their homes in 2009. Louise (principal of Lumen Christi) picked up on this need in line with their vision to reach out meaningfully to the local community. She connected individually with these home-based ladies and then organized to bring them together at one meeting. The ladies introduced themselves and explained to each other what they were doing. Common needs and challenges were noted. Una Petersen, from the Department of Social Development, connected in this process to provide correct directive for it. She is turn with the Department of Social Development, Western Cape, was able to set up a project to specifically provide home-based crèches with support and prepare them to meet the minimum Early Childhood Education (ECD) standards. This would enable them to become registered facilities for chil-dren in the community. An agreement between the Department of Social Development, Lumen Christi and Grassroots, Cape

Town based community development NGO having experience in ECD with the home-bases resulted in the one year ‘Bitou Playgroup Project’ being started in May 2010. Provision was made to help 20 Bitou facilities. Two staff members were appointed to manage the process and provide practical support to the crèches. The ladies received some basic ECD and First Aid Level 1 training. They also attended numerous workshops related to their challenges of meeting the ECD standards for registration. An enrichment centre was built and equipped for them to visit, do activities and borrow ECD equipment and books. It was also designed so that the centre can meet broader community needs. The ladies each received a basic toolkit of equipment. Grassroots was also able, for the year, to provide them with a monthly nutritional allowance to ensure that children receive balanced meals daily and the money usually spent on food could be used to improve the creche facility. Those involved in the project have come together regularly, drawn close to and helped each other. They continue to meet and overcome enormous challenges. Ladies received certificates for courses they attended and their registration papers have been handed to the Department of Social Development. These home-based ladies are involved in broader ECD community activities. They recently attended a workshop presented for crèches by the Eden District Municipality’s Health Department.

"Our NSRI volunteer duty crew launched 2 sea rescue craft and volunteer NSRI rescue swimmers and our NSRI station doctor responded to the scene. The SA Police Services, Guardmed Ambulance Service and the Tsitsikama Ambulance Service responded to the scene. "On arrival on-scene 49 year old local male surfer Tim van Heerden was found on the beach (he had been removed from the water by fellow surfers) in a critical condition and resuscitation efforts commenced. He sustained severe shark bite marks to the upper left leg and groin area. "The man was transported to a local

"After all efforts to save the man's life were exhausted he was declared dead in hospital. "The family of the man have been informed and NSRI are in communication with his father who has declined respectfully to speak directly to the media. "It is strongly suspected, based on eye-witness accounts, that the species of shark involved was a White Shark. An investigation to confirm this will be conducted by the Shark Working Group. "A large group of surfers were surfing in the area at the time of the incident. "NSRI have, as a precautionary measure, advised bathers and surfers to abstain from entering the sea in the Plettenberg Bay area at this point, based on this incident, although no formal law enforcement measures will be deployed to enforce no bathing or no surfing – this is only an advisory and does not carry a time limit as it will be up to individuals to assess their own decision to enter the sea. "The last shark incident to occur in Plettenberg Bay was 13 years ago and it was not fatal. To our knowledge this is the only fatal shark incident in Plett's history." They are the only people who will tell us not to paint at the stadium, not the Youth League, we have a vision of promoting and uplifting arts and culture in the greater Plettenberg Bay and put our Plett in the right direction. When our society was established in 2010 we where funded by FIFA via Bitou Municipality, we painted at the stadium 2010 FIFA World Cup participating country flags, we never received complaints and intimidation and we held an “Aids awareness Campaign” paintings at the stadium. This year we have the same program but a different local government and theme, our theme is “Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign” During our Launch on the 27th June 2011 at Kwanokuthula C Hall, we have invited all citizens, artists, stakeholders, councillors, learners and teachers and only the DA and Cope councillors attended our launch and it was funded by different local businesses who are currently painted at the stadiums. During the running of our monthly program, we were supported by DA councillors through thick & thin and at the closing of our event on the 23 July 2011. We invited municipal officials and councillors to the Crags Community Hall. Only DA Council-lors, executive Mayor and deputy attended our ceremony. So we are not expecting a political lecture or criticism from another party, let alone intimidations. Bitou Arts and Culture Society will be hosting a “Heritage Month Festival”, Art & Culture Competition and an Award ceremony at Piesang Valley Hall. God bless! Stephen “King Dwight” Gelembe

Letter via the Editor "In response to Mac Gander's query about the proposed new Hotel on the fringes of our very beautiful and pristine lagoon, I totally agree with your sentiment. Why can't the old Protea Hotel be utilised - it's in a fabulous spot and has sadly become another one of Plett's white elephants. In the same vein, why do we need yet another development (Lighthouse Square) involving apartments, offices, shops and restaurants at the end of Longships? Despite all the empty shops in town as well as struggling restaurants etc this project seems to have been getting the attention of our town's council for years. The area in question is now an ugly scar on our landscape, as the old refuse dump has been removed, leaving behind a field of broken bottles, plastic bags and dead contaminated soil, where I doubt the lovely fynbos and indigenous shrubs will return. It's now an eyesore and definitely a lesson in why recycling is so important to our present community - but surely the owners of this property could revamp or restore it to it's original state and rather focus on acquiring more residents for their half empty and sealed off estates before pushing ahead with a shopping centre". Life in Plett DATING & BABIES. Dating - now there is a terrifying word. I have been married a couple of times but Beloved is definitely the last (touch wood). You never know with guys, they will throw you out for some pretty airhead, barely out of nappies, after you have spent years naturing them and making them what they are today. Beloved has been mine for 24 years now and is a good boy. Back to "Dating", all those questions that take so much time. Where were you born, where did you go to school, are you or have you been married. Do you have any kids, how old are they, where did they go to school. Where did you go to school, have you been to 'varsity, what degree did you do. Who are are your parents, where do they live, WHAT DOES YOUR DAD DO FOR A LIVING, VERY IMPORTANT

QUESTION. What do you do for a living, what kind of car do you drive, where do you live. Then you have to ask all the same questions and it just takes ages for all this makakas to come out. If you are out to dinner, you will get the finest wines and he will tell you how marvellous all the expensive dishes are and insist you try them. He will gently wipe dribbles off your chin as he edges nearer like a lion preparing for the kill. He will keep filling your wine glass, this to insure that his prey is a little wobbly on the legs, to make you are easier catch. He will do anything to get into your dwelling, or his dwelling for that final cup of coffee. Once there you are dead meat unless you can duck out without him flattening you. There is always an expected re-payment for all the money he has just spent. I have a girlfriend, who after being married and divorced for years, tried the dating game. After dinner they ended up at her house and they spent half an hour running around the dining room table as he tried to gain possession of her. She is quite a strong girl and finally hoofed him out, never to see hime again. Not a peep. My friends, Lara & Steve, are with child. I have told you this before - but now she is 10 weeks along as they say. We went for coffee the other day so that I could give her the "we don't know the sex yet" chat. She had this pretty and excited look in her eye that these women get. Thirty years ago I would have been stoking her tummy and cooing and oooing and asking all sorts of questions. Things have changed though with age and I no longer get that fluttering feeling in my tummy when I see a pregnant lady, and nor do I peer into every passing pram or that wrapped bundle in mummy's

Imagine walking down the road and seeing your 70 year old friend pushing her pram with one hand and her walking sick in the other. The bag hanging off her baby's pram would be full of medicines and nappies to be shared. She would be wearing her new 'in' airline stockings to keep her veins in place and have more woolies on than her baby. She’d keep having to look for a bench or wall to rest on and loos also a necessity, every ten minutes. She would have black rings under her eyes; partly from lack of sleep but mostly it would be her smudgy eyeliner. The bright red dots on the cheeks would also be a give away and the lipstick, well, goodness me. Now imagine a whole lot of those ladies walking around like this. I know many aged ladies who say 'I would love to have another baby'. I know a lot of men who started a second family at 65 ???? Heard a sweet joke from my sister, quoting a Durban newspaper: She (cooing sweetly from the kitchen) : 'What would you like for dinner sweetie; chicken, beef or lamb? PAWS and the CVC are sterilizing daily, with the help of the Vets in our area, and therefore are reducing numbers of unwanted litters. But, we also need to consider the very homeable unwanted. It is just so unnecessary that these animals have to die. Heidi We referred his letter to the Paws Premises Committee who replied: The Paws Premises Project has raised worked extremely hard to raise money in order to build a kennelling and clinic facility. We know that it is frustrating that nothing has happened as yet but circumstances beyond our control have prevented us from getting going. We have earmarked a piece of property (close to the one which the Municipality originally leased to us) which is suitable for this function. It is part of a property which has to be subdivided.
