Have you ever seen a beautiful face walking down the hallway? If you have, it’s probably Chay or…its Ms. Jarvis!!! Ms. Jarvis teaches a grade three classroom and she just came back from having her baby. Her son’s name is Holden. Holden was born December 26, 2017, on Boxing Day! Now he is just over a year old! When Ms. Jarvis isn’t teaching she loves to spend time with her family and friends and go to her family’s cabin. Ms. Jarvis became a teacher because when she was little she loved playing school at home and when she got older she worked with high school kids on a hockey team. Before teaching, she was a nanny, a babysitter and a waitress. We are very happy to have Ms. Jarvis as a teacher at H.M.K.!

Who loves Valentine’s Day? I do! You are going to read about the amazing Valentine’s Day traditions around the world starting with the China! China originally got their Valentine traditions from western countries. They still exchange gifts like chocolates, teddy bears, roses and other gifts but sadly only the bigger cities, like Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, get to celebrate. In the middle of the ocean is the island of New Zealand. A long time ago they had this tradition called the lace “pick up”. What the women did was they dropped their lace handkerchief beside a lad (lad means gentlemen) and she walked by until the lad picked it up and started a conversation. Over in Peru, “El Dia del Amor de La Amistad” translates to “The Friendship Love Day”. Valentine’s Day is also one of their biggest holidays. Sira and Rhea

Cubs Corner newspaper writers, Siri and Rhea got welcomed into the Home Ec. room at N.A.C.I. for a day. First when they got there, Mrs. Platt was teaching grade eights how to use sewing machines. At the start they struggled a bit, but some of them got the hang of it and even became experts! Mrs. Platt is very king and encouraging and she very much loves her job! We learned that Mrs. Platt grew up in Neepawa and her favorite thing to do in Home Ec. is cooking. She became a Home Ec. teacher because Mrs. Platt was a teacher for 34 years and the Home Ec. teacher needed someone to fill in for a while. Next up to come in the classroom were the grade sevens. They were learning how to hand sew. There were some people the reporters knew so Siri sort of tutored them. Mrs. Platt was nice enough to try and let the reporters sew too! After that class, they got ready to cook up some fun! The grade elevens and twelves made some Shepherd’s Pie. Sadly, they only had enough time to bake half of it but it still smelled really good. After the cooking, they took a little test on cooking safety! Siri and Rhea are so lucky to have gone to the Home Ec. Room. When you’re in high school, remember you’ll all get a chance to try Home Ec.!

Checking Out the Chicken Corral

Zoey and Layla

Have you ever been to Chicken Corral? That’s where cub reporters, Zoey and Layla went, on an extremely cold winter’s day. When the girls got there they got to speak to Darryl, the manager. He was very nice. We asked him a few questions. We found out that Darryl has been working there since July 2017. He told us that Chicken Corral has been in business for a long time-since 1979! We wondered how many workers worked there and he told us that he has a staff of 25 people. He told us that the most popular food on the menu was chicken! We learned that it can take different amounts of time to make different foods. Chicken fingers, for example, takes 15 minutes. Darryl said that the amount of meals they make in one day depends on the day. Darryl loves working at Chicken Corral because he likes to make good food with great people and he enjoys meeting customers. After the interview, Darryl gave us a tour. The reporters visited the drink station where they make coffee, tea and slushies. Then they went to the party and banquet room. After that, they went into the kitchen. There were many different types of equipment and supplies in the kitchen. If you’re ever wanting to go to a restaurant and you’re hungry for delicious chicken or other food, go to Chicken Corral!
