The first few weeks will be challenging for your new student as he works to assimilate to his new environment. He may not be able to do much but you can expect him to be prepared for class and make an attempt to follow what you are doing. Even copying may be slow as they probably dont know most of the words they are copying and in some cases, they may be learning a whole new alphabet.7How do I communicate?SMILE its universalSpeak slowlyUse few words for face to face interactionsGesturesPicturesFind a BuddyWait time at least 3 secondsTechnology Translation websitesAnother student who may speak the same language

English Language Learners must be graded using the same system that we use for all students. Most subjects use letter grades. In order to do this, you will need to evaluate their work differently to determine this grade. It may be better to focus on specific skills For example For essays or longer papers Have the student write an outline with a well written thesis or Write just the body paragraphs of a 5 paragraph essay. We have developed a special grading rubric that focuses on progress and some other social areas. 11

This rubric will be used by the classroom teacher and will give you the opportunity to give the student a letter grade.Notice that 50% of the grade is based on progress and performance. 12Enjoy!Dont stressSeize opportunities to let them shineWatch your other students interact Encourage them to engage the new student

Finally Enjoy. Remember - these beginners will be learning a wealth of vocabulary in a short time. You will be a big part of that. Use any opportunity to let them share or respond as you see fit. Sometimes you may learn something about them and you can share it with the class or your ESL specialist may offer something as well. Watch how your other students follow your lead and interact you may be pleasantly surprised. 13
