• Well, the first thing you should do is find out how drunk you are using a portable breathalyser.

• This will give you an idea of whether it will be safe for you to drive.

• If the breathalyser shows that you are above the limit, then do not, under any circumstances drive.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

If you are below the limit then you may be safe to drive but you should remember that handheld breathalysers are not completely accurate - so you may still want to wait a little while to sober up even more.

RULE OF THUMB

As a rule of thumb, the average man can metabolize one unit of alcohol per hour.

A pint of beer, of average strength, is two units, so after two hours most of the alcohol should have passed through your system.

YOU CANNOT SPEED THIS UP

You cannot really speed this up. If you are already drunk then drinking coffee will just make you feel more awake - but still drunk. Better look here for more tips what to do.

However, drinking water will help to flush your system out, and could help to make you feel better in the long run.
