What to Do if You Get Into a Car Accident

Unfortunately, accidents happen and they can happen to anyone. Being the safest driver in the world doesn’t mean that you may not get into a car accident at some point. For this reason, it’s important to be prepared and always keep a first aid kit and all important information and documentation in your car at all times. If you get into an accident be sure to do the following:

Stay CalmGetting into a car accident is obviously a stressful situation. It’s easy to start to panic, but try and remain calm. Panicking may lead to making poor decisions following an accident.

Move to the Side of the Road (If Possible)Depending on how bad the car accident is, it may be impossible to move the car. But if there are no serious injuries and the cars are still drive-able, move them to the side of the road and warn oncoming traffic. Turn on hazard lights and set out cones, flares, and warning triangles which should be kept in your car for safety purposes at all times.

Call 911Call the authorities whether or not there are injuries. Explain the accident conditions and the police will determine whether an authority presence is needed at the accident scene.

Exchange Information with the Other PartyAfter an accident, it’s easy to get frustrated and distracted, but don’t forget this important step. Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance company names, insurance company policy numbers, divers license numbers, and license plate numbers with the other party.

Document the AccidentWhile it is fresh in your memory and while you are at the scene, write down the exact location of the accident and how it happened. Include descriptions of each car, including the year, make, model, and color. Most cell phones have camera capabilities today, so take photos of the accident for future reference.

Find a WitnessIf you don’t think that the accident was your fault, see if there were any witnesses to the accident and ask for their contact information.

File an Accident ReportIf the accident wasn’t too severe, the authorities may not come. File an accident report on your own. This documentation can help speed up the insurance company claims process.
