What is System 44?
System 44 is a foundational reading and phonics intervention technology program for our most challenged readers in Grades 3-12+. System 44 is designed for use in a small group setting, with students rotating between the software and small group differentiated instruction or modeled, and independent reading.
SRI Test: Scholastic Reading Inventory
The SPI is a 20-30 minute test designed to measure a students current reading level.
This test shows us how well a student can COMPREHEND material that they read.
Fiction and nonfiction questions get easier or harder based on the student’s answers.
Can skip 3 questions.
Students will take this test 3 times a year to monitor and track progress.
SPI: Scholastic Phonics Inventory The SPI is a reliable and validated measure of decoding
and sight word reading fluency.
The test will identify students as pre-decoders, beginning decoders, developing decoders, and advancing decoders.
The software will place students in the program at either series 1 or series 4 based on their SPI score.
Students will take this test 3 times a year to monitor and track progress.
Three rotations per day: 20 minutes on the software
Active reading work
Decodable Digest and 44 book work
**Small group lessons, SMART lessons, or interventions with teacher.
The software: Personalized direct instruction
The Code: This is where students receive systematic, direct
instruction in decoding.
Students will work on blending and word attack strategies, practice decoding words, and applying decoding skills to construct meaning and answer questions.
Students will be able to manipulate letters and patterns to build new words.
Students will learn important spelling rules and generalizations.
The Code: (continued) Students will practice spelling words to develop
accuracy and fluency.
Students will transfer skills and build reading speed through repeated readings.
Students read sentences for meaning and answer questions that require careful reading.
Sight Words: In this section students will build fluency and
automaticity with high frequency words.
Students will complete a sight word assessment.
Students will receive a customized list of study words for instruction and practice.
Students will receive individualized, systematic instruction.
Students will spell a list of targeted and review words from dictation with immediate, corrective feedback.
Sight Words: (continued) Students will practice spelling words to develop
accuracy and fluency.
Students will read sentences for meaning to build fluency and automaticity.
Students will answer questions that require careful reading.
Word Strategies: In this section students receive direct instruction in
word strategies teaches students to recognize syllable types and word parts when reading.
Students will receive direct instruction, modeling, and guided practice of concepts and strategies related to syllables and word parts.
Students will practice using tools to recognize familiar word parts, identify vowel spots, split a word into its parts/syllables, and read the word.
Word Strategies: (continued) Students will receive coaching, support, and
immediate feedback when using strategies.
Students will learn important spelling rules and generalizations.
Students will independently practice spelling words to develop accuracy and fluency.
Students will transfer skills and build reading speed through repeated readings.
Students will read sentences for meaning and answer questions.
Success: In this section students apply new skills by reading
connected text for meaning.
Students view engaging videos, which build background knowledge and mental models, before they read and record a passage.
Students will receive exposure to key vocabulary and concepts in the reading passage.
Students will read nondecodable passages that includes many target words and elements for success.
Success: (continued) Students will make recordings of their reading to build
fluency and self-monitoring skills.
Students will view an image relating to the previous passages and match it to one of three decodable captions.
Students will make and save a final recording of the passage for assessment. Students may record again if they are unhappy with their first recording.
Students will receive fluency tips that encourage them to read with appropriate expression, rate, etc.
Fast Tracking: System 44 follows through the process of how to read.
However, for kids only missing pieces of the puzzle, they have chances to bypass the parts that they know. This is called fast tracking.
Starting at series 4 all students will be given a preassessment of the skill that the series is about to teach them. If they students shows the software that they already know this skill than students will be moved to the next skill.
Active Reading: The System 44 library provides age-appropriate texts
for students who are developing decoders.
Allows students to practice reading and build their vocabulary.
Books specifically target the skills that students are working on at that time.
Students will complete an active reading packet while reading the book to reinforce comprehension skills, and will understand reading is not just reading words, but making meaning of what you are reading. Finally, they will take an online quiz at the end of each book.
Decodable Digest: The Decodable Digest includes two passages for every
sound-spelling correspondence taught in the program.
Each passage is at least 75% decodable and is designed to engage, reluctant, older students.
Students will complete a page along with their Decodable Digest to demonstrate that they understand what they are reading, and to make meaning of the passage.
44 Book: The 44Book reinforces skills from the software and
teacher-led instruction as activities guide students to read, write, and think.
These activities feature word building, word sorts, puzzles, and other engaging exercises.
Teacher: Whole group instruction: S.M.A.R.T. lessons present
essential concepts, teach academic vocabulary, and build background for learning.
Small group instruction: Decoding and word strategies lessons present explicit, systematic, instruction on the most high-utility spellings or the 44 sounds of English, syllable strategies, morphology, sight words, and more.
Interventions: Small group or 1:1 interventions on skills that students are having trouble with based on the data.
Reports: There are reports that are checked daily, weekly, and
monthly.
These reports drive the instruction in the classroom.
The reports give data on all of the work that students do while on the computer.
Reports will be sent home at the end of each month to allow you to also track and monitor your child’s progress in the program.
Now time for you to try it out!
