What if I'm not good enough ?It was a big shock to me when I graduatedfrom Bordeaux Primary School to KingEdward VII High School. It wasn’t onlythe fact that I went to boarding school at13. Or that it was an all-boys school. Orthat there were more than a 1000 boyscompeting for an education. It was thatthe standards were so high. In primaryschool I was a big deal (or so I thought).First team cricket. First team soccer (halfcolours for soccer). Top three in athletics.Intellectually functional with a B+ average.Popular with the teachers and mildlypopular with the opposite sex. But I wasworking off a low base. I was a big fish in asmall pond. I doubt there were more than300 children at the school. Maybe therewere 150 boys, all told. At King EdwardVII, I became a small fish in a big pond. AllI could get into was the D or E team inrugby. I didn’t get the nod for the cricketteam. I was offered the position of scorer. Ijust couldn’t see myself as counting runswhen I wanted to make runs. So, I declined.I was an embarrassment in the athleticsdepartment. My academic achievementsweren’t exemplary. I did, however, crack thenod to join the chess team ... as a reserve.Luckily for me I had a wise mother. Shesaid that she’d love me no matter what. Allshe expected from me was to try my best. And, that I’d never disappoint her. I failedmiserably on the disappointment score. But that’s another story. So, even though
I never aced it at school, my self esteem wasstill intact. I tried my best and that was goodenough for me. Not for one second did I feelthat I wasn’t good enough. You see, mymother never implied that she’d love me moreif I got good marks at school. It didn’t matterto her whether I made the 1st team or not.She thought I was smart, with or withoutacademic colours. She said, “I will love you,no matter what.” That made all thedifference. For her, I was enough. And, todayI know that’s true. I’m enough.~ Jacques de Villiers ~

Who do we help??Our assistance is given to animal lovers onan economics basis. Most township residentsreceive ONLY a government pension. ANDthey then have to support MANY dependantson this small monthly income. Sometimeswe are approached by local residents wantingto do procedures under the WAG name, justso that they can get the benefit of the reducedveterinary rates offered to Charities. This isCLEARLY not our purpose. We need to assistthe less fortunate pet owners who have noway of getting their pets to the Vet, thatcannot afford veterinary care, and that areignorant of proper pet care. Our constant
WAG fundingand donationsOur “Pension Day” jumble sales continueto generate a regular flow of income. Weappeal again for any old clothes, linen, kitchen ware etc. for this worthy cause. Our WAG collection tins also provide asteady source of cash. We thank you forplacing you small change in our tins! Nomatter how little it quickly adds up.Jumble and Tins brought in R7 000 in 2015!!Book sales – we are so grateful for the fundsreceived from “BookLove” who sell 2nd handbooks each weekend. Our sincere thanks to all of you for yourloyal support and regular contributions. education of pet owners really is working. We are pleasantly surprised at how manypet owners now contact us when their dogsare sick! We do try to insist that everybodycontributes something towards theiranimal’s care. We aim to recover a minumumof 20% and try for 50%.....We always ask forsome contribution. No matter how little.Sometimes owners will give just R10 or R20per month. Very often they cannot giveanything at all, but they have to acceptresponisbility for their pets. In 2015 around10% of our total income was from owner’scontributions for their pet care. We do our
best to help allcitizens in our area, and we will notignore animals in direc i r c u m s t a n c e s .Recently we assistedin kennelling and re-homing the dogs oftwo local residentsthat passed away. Itis very distressingthat some localresidents perceiveus as RACISTbecause we will notoffer themdiscounted vetservices. Theypatently do notunderstand thecharity concept andthe arrangmentswhich we as a charityhave with our localveterinary hospital. We could notoperate sosuccesfully withoutthe full support of
our local Animal Hospital. At no time do we want to seen abusingthe concessions which they give us.
