What I Learned About Blogging in 14 Years

by Nile Flores http://blondish.net @blondishnet

14 Years of Blogging???

I wasn’t always a tech blogger.

I wasn’t always a WordPress user.

I wasn’t always a mom.

I just loved to write!

Have a site focus

Even if you blog about random stuff around your personal life, let people know:

Who you areWhat you’re offeringWhy you matter

People love to hear your story!

Choose a Domain name

Choose it carefully.

Changing domains on a whim can hurt you.

You Need a Newsletter

Utilize RSS to Newsletter Campaigns.

Utilize site updates to reel visitors back to whatever is happening on your website or social networks.

Backups Are Important

You never know when your site will have problems.

Always backup your site.

Don’t wait for your web host to do it for you.

Secure Your WordPress Blog

At the very least, have a security plugin installed, AND configured.

SEO is not a game

Write naturally.

Be yourself.

Stop overcomplicating SEO.

Ignore the Haters

Some people are crazy and have nothing to do but grief others.

Ignore it if you can.

Moderate what you can’t.

You Don’t Have to Be A Blogging Machine

We’re all not Nile-bot, and even Nile-bot needs a vacation.

Set your blog schedule.

Live your life!

Make friends with other bloggers

Make friends with influencers in your niche.

Make friends with influencers in niche similar to yours.

Make friends with your readers. Many of them blog too.

Blogging isn’t perfect

WordPress has that handy Update button. Use it!

Your best post from way back in the day may have spelling and grammar errors, but you can always go back to fix it.

Blogging isn’t a glamorous job

For some, eventually it will be, but it’s not.

Don’t quit your day job.

Humble Pie

Sometimes you’re gonna eat a piece of it.

Accept the mistake, learn from the experience, and move on.

Family is Important

You may like to blog, and get so wrapped up in it, but don’t forget your family.

You Gotta Keep Hustling

If you’re struggling with your blog, don’t quit.

Just change the game up.
