2. Getting the feedback

To properly evaluate my video, I needed a method of getting audience feedback in an easy but honest manner. So I decided to send a questionnaire, but on Facebook, because I felt that people may have been bias towards me if it was in person. I selected a random mix of people aged between 13 and 19, both male and female (as this is my intended target audience) and in-boxed them the questionnaire below;

As you can see, I have used a marker band of 1 5 for some of the questions, rating bad to great, sothat I can get an understanding what people really think of my video. I also put add a comment too, so that they can add more detail if they wanted to.

I also made sure that there was enough questions to get feedback on every aspect, but not so muchto bore the audience.

Lowest age = 13 Oldest age = 19 I will now analyse each question to understand what I have learnt from making the video.

3. Question 1

Do you think the style of the music video went with the genre of music?

This was a yes/no questions with the results as follows; 90% = YES 10% = NO

What I have learnt from this? This question was crucial to my feedback, as I had made a narrative video. Over all, it is a positive outcome, and I would agree, because the genre of music is quite electric and unusual, and I have tried to portray that within my video through cutting and shots, as well as the theme. I tried to make the theme as much relevent to the lyric content as possible. For the two no answers, the comments I received was that it was quite bloody so they would relate that to a more heavier genre, so I think that if I was to do the video again, I would use less blood, or use connotations to symbolise blood.

4. Question 2

How would you rate the mise -en-scene? 1 being bad 2 being poor, 3 being fair, 4 being good and 5 being excellent. This was a ratings question with the results as follows 1 = 0 people 2 = 0 people 3 = 1 people 4 = 17 people 5 = 2 people

What have I learnt from this? The feedback for this question was mainly positive, with nothing being rated as poor or bad for the mise -en-scene. This would show that what I have created with the mise-en-scene is basically what people perceive of a hospital (red cross, nurse outfit, doctors lab coat, stethoscope, heart monitor), a young trendy couple (long hair, fashionable clothes, understated make up)and the emotions to comply with the style (angry, guilty, sad, threatening). I am quite happy with how the mise-en-scene turned out myself, because the luck I had with the location looking like a hospital, and being able to borrow some props from the local hospital or otherwise comprising. For the 1 fair rating, the comment that I received was that there was a few continuity errors, so if I was to improve this, I would make sure I had more time to film and that I had a clearer plan of what was going on, so that I can spot if something isnt right.

5. Question 3

How would you rate the camera work? 1 being bad 2 being poor, 3 being fair, 4 being good and 5 being excellent. This was a ratings question with the results as follows; 1 = 0 people, 2 = 3 people, 3 = 8 people, 4 = 9 people, 5 = 0 people

What have I learnt from this? The over all outcome of this, is that the audience feedback think the camera work is average. The type of comments I received was that for the flashback parts the camera work was good, but for other areas it was shaky, however they didnt know whether this was meant to be on purpose. I had intended for a lot of my video to be from a point of view perspective, so it would be shaky, however, as I was on a short time limit, I didnt really have as much time to set up the tripod. Other comments that I received for the good ratings was that, they liked some of the shots because they were different. I think if I was to improve this area, I would definitely, use the tripod more, or try to make it more clearer when the camera work is shaky.

How would you rate the editing 1 being bad 2 being poor, 3 being fair, 4 being good and 5 being excellent. This was a ratings question with the results as follows; 1 = 0 people, 2 = 1 people 3, = 0 people, 4 = 11 people, 5 = 8people

What I have learnt from this; The over all outcome of this, is mostly positive to high. The type of comments that I received, were that they liked how the cutting fit to the beat, and how it was speeded up to accompany the song. I feel that my editing was probably the best part of my video and I really enjoyed doing it, especially speeding up shots, because it makes a change from having a normal tempo. Other comments were that the black and white, helped for them to understand when there was a flash back, and they would of liked to see more editing effects though. I think if I was to improve on this, I would add a filter effect, to give it a more grittier mood, and possibly play with the brightness and contrast to give a stronger feeling of good and bad.

7. Question 5

The structure of the video is a narrative? Do you feel that after watching the video, you could understand what it was about? This question was yes/no question with the results as follows; 70% = YES 30% = NO

What have I learnt from this? The over all out come of this was generally positive. The think narrative itself is simple, but I wanted to leave the audience guessing how it all came together, so I didnt leave many clues until the end. This may have left viewers confused however. Some of the comments that I received were spot on, however others mentioned that they had to watch it twice to fully understand. The fact that some of the shots had intersected cuts of black, may also have confused the viewer, however I want this to be intentional as a reflection of Alyshas memory. I think if I was to improve on this, I would take more time creating the storyboard, and film in order of events.

What I have learnt from this; I have learnt from this that, there are elements of my video that I have enjoyed making as well as the audience. With the editing, it was a lot of work, but the outcome has come out well. With the blood, I wanted to make it look shocking, so this was a good idea. With the storyline I wanted to have twist, with Alysha actually being alive at the end so it left viewers hanging. With the flickering parts, I felt that this helped add to the songs beat, and reflect Alyshas memory being hazy. With the camera work, I enjoyed experimenting with new shots, or developing on normal ones. I think if I was to improve on this, I would just try to make everything look more professional

What was your least favourite thing about the video and why? This was an opinionated question with the results as follows;

SPECIAL EFFECTS

What I have learnt from this? I would probably agree with some of these bullet points myself. With the special effects, I only had a small budget, so this could not really be help. With the walking shots, I tried to make them diverse and interesting as possible, by speeding up and over lapping shots, however I would agree that I could of put some different parts in. With the no sound effects, I wanted to give it a sense of mystery, and leavethe song to the talking, however I can see how people can get confused. With the blood, I wanted to make it look shocking, but I can see why it may put viewers off, if they felt it was too violet. I think if I was to improve on this, I would look at more editing effects to create special effects, film some other shots, experiment with sound effects and use less blood.

10. Question 8

How would you rate the acting within the video? 1 being bad 2 being poor, 3 being fair, 4 being good and 5 being excellent.

This was a ratings question with the results as follows; 1 = 2 people, 2 = 1 people, 3 = 6 people, 4 = 9 people, 5 = 2 people

What have I learnt from this?; The over all outcome of this mainly okay. I decided to ask my friends to act in the video because I knew they would be willing to do it for me. As my video is a narrative, the acting was needed, but I dont think it made the whole video, and I only needed them to look sombre most of the time. I think if I was to improve this, I would be more stern with them, or use people I didnt know as well. I would probably research who would be best for the part, but I think they did the job well enough.

11. Question 9

Do you think this video would help the artist to sell the song? This was a yes/no question with the results as follows;80% = YES 20% = NO

What have I learnt from this? This has made me learn that, using a narrative can be time consuming, but it can help sell the song, especially one with such a different style of music. When researching the band, I saw that the type of videos that have made are similar to what Ive done, so if the fans already like that then I hope that they would like my video. For the no answers the comments were that it may be too scary and put viewers off. To improve this, I would probably make it more suitable for younger audiences so that more can people can see it and the tracks can get sold.

Do you think the introduction before the song began helped add to the video, or did you find it pointless? This was an opinionated question with the results as follows;

IT DID, BUT AFTER A FEW TIMES IT COULD BECOME ANNOYING

What I have learnt from this; I think I have learnt from this, that over all the introduction was a good idea, because I feel that it helps set the scene and show how they have arrived. However it would probably be annoying after a while, so I think as a compromise, to improve I could make it shorter.

What have I learnt from this?; Over all this is a positive outcome, so I have learnt that I can actually make a video, well but there are elements that I should probably take more time to plan out. One of the things that I found hardest to do before actually making the video was the storyboard, as it had to be rather precise. If I was to do this again I would probably experiment with a different concept such as a performance, and definitely plan my time keeping more efficiently.
