say? We are grateful for your

kindnesses and understand-

ing—your notes and cards and

prayers—during the recent fam-

ily experiences of the death of

our father, Virgil Nipper, and

the news about the upcoming

surgeries for our daughter-in-

law, Ashley.

While we are away, we will con-

tinue to pray for you all, know-

ing that you will be in faithful

and capable hands of Pastor Ed

and our wonderful staff of OSLC

(Cindy, Melissa, and Carolynn).

For them, I am very thankful!

What else can we do but pray?

God is our strength and our ref-

uge. If we do not rely on Him in

every situation, we will fail. But,

with Him by our side, "all things

work together for good to those

who love the Lord." (Romans

8:28) What else is there to say?

We're very appreciative for the

understanding of such a caring

congregation. Because of our

absence you have been very ac-

cepting of changes (worship

times in particular) that we had-

n't thought we would have to

make. It is such a help to our

wonderful leaders (your Con-

gregational Council) that you

are so thoughtful about these

things. How else can we share

our love than saying thanks?

As our family experiences what

lies ahead in the next month or

two, we will try hard to keep

you aware of what is happening.

That way, our prayers together

can be even more helpful to

God and to us as we know what

exactly is needed each day.

How else can we pray together?

God's peace be with you all. We

will miss being with you, but we

will be with you in spirit! God's

love (and our love for one an-

other) has no limits when it

comes to distance. What else

9 a.m. traditional worship

10 a.m. Sunday School

11 a.m. Heartsong worship

Closed with the Lord's Prayer.

Music News from Carolynn

Dear OSLC Family,

It’s been a hot summer, but with the rain today the temperature

rests now in the 70s and it feels great! The rain knocked many

leaves off my trees making my yard look like autumn has al-

ready arrived! I’m not fooled, but I can’t help but know that the

season is waning!

I look forward to another “year” of great choir music, working

with children of all ages, and preparing the programs that

we’ve come to expect and enjoy. I’ve met with our PDO music

team as well as with Marcy, our Christian Ed. Director. I have

also met with Tony and the Heartsong Band as we collaborate on a special 9/11 remembrance.

Our special Reformation worship will be thrilling with brass ensemble and extra choir singers

from our sister congregations in the deanery. We’ve got some wonderful plans and I hope that

you will be supportive and pleased.

You, as a singing congregation, were paid the highest compliment by our substitute organists

this summer! I am so very proud of you – keep up the good work and raise our rafters in praise

whenever we meet in worship!

The choir door is always open! We need more singers to help share praise through music. We

have plenty of chairs and enough copies of music. Ongoing rehearsals are each Wednesday at

7:00 p.m. Please come – the pay is not great but the benefits are out of this world!

10 Commandments for Choirs

I. Thou shalt open thy mouth to sing, and not to complain or bear false witness.

II. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s voice, but neither shall thou become overly impressed

with thine own.

III. Thou shalt not try to steal the show, for it is God thou art honoring and not thyself.

IV. Thou shalt honor practice night and keep it free, for a good choir is made – not born.

V. Thou shalt remember where thou art during Sunday worship and keep it holy. A giggling,

chattering choir is an abomination to the Lord, a worry to the

pastor, and an irritation to the choir director.

VI. Thou shalt look up at the choir director while singing – not show-

ing hair parts and dandruff.

VII. Thou shalt not put off joining the choir, for it is a service.

VIII. Thou shalt not make a joyful noise unto the Lord with a sour face.

IX. Thou shalt not kill thy choir by competing with the choir director

for his or her job.

High Road, Confirmation Class

10 a.m. Sunday Mornings

Our middle school students, those in 5th-8th grades will be part of our High Road Confirmation Class. This is a shift from a two-year program to a four-year learning peri-od. Time is built in this class for sharing what is going on in life, as well as learning about the Creeds, the Ten Com-mandments, The Lord’s Prayer, Why and How We Wor-ship, Baptism, Holy Communion, and The Bible. As part of this class we have added some special opportunities and requirements.

* Each student will choose a mentor during their first year. The mentor is typically a member of OSLC.

* Students in 6th grade and up are encouraged to partici-pate in our Youth Group

* Students in 7th and 8th grade are expected to partici-pate in a Summer camp program that is funded by OSLC. We have three excellent camp opportunities that are al-ready approved—Affirm, Lutheridge, and WOW. More information will be provided on these camps in the Spring

* Students in 8th grade are expected to do a service pro-ject that serves either OSLC or their community. This project must receive pastoral approval. Project proposal should be submitted by the Fall semester of the students 8th grade year and completed before Confirmation.

* This class is taught by Sean Golden and Deb Soike with input from the Pastors.

The Underground Huddle

(6th -12th grades)

We meet on Wednesday nights. During Underground Huddle times we check-in on what’s going on in life and have some in-depth study and discipleship learning time. Put the dates below on your calendars.

It’s right around the corner…

Rally Sunday, September 18

Hold on to my teaching. Don’t let it go. Guard it well. It is your life. Proverbs 4:13 (NIRV)

Please join us in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 18, for a morn-

ing of music and prayer. After a short kick-off service, everyone will move to their

individual rooms to receive and review their class materials as well as enjoy some

refreshments and fellowship. We are asking all parents to attend the introductory

session with their children to fill out paperwork, check out our volunteer op-

portunities, and pick up a calendar. When the kids move to their classrooms, you

will be able to enjoy refreshments and fellowship with the other parents.

We encourage all members of Our Saviour to prayerfully consider joining us for one of

the following classes:

Our adult class will meet in the library. "A Great-Grandma to a King, a King Maker, a King, and a Royal Pain" is the title of the next Bible Study for the Adult Sunday School Class that meets in the library this fall. It's taken from stories about Ruth, Samuel, David, and Elijah. "Ruth: Your God is My God" is the title of the opening chapter and points to the reality that there is one God for all people. The second class is entitled: "Samuel: Hearing God Speak an Unexpected Word." God speaks all the time; are we listening?

All adults are invited to join with Lee Ketner, David & Cassie McAllister, and Pat Wolf as we team-teach these wonderful Old Testament stories.

Our women’s class will meet in Pastor Jim’s office. This class utilizes an informal small-group for-

mat and will begin the year studying the Sovereignty of God and Jesus with scriptures from Isaiah

and Hebrews.

Our High Road class will use the re:form Ancestors curriculum to explore some of the personali-

ties found in both the Old and New Testaments; they will also be doing an in-depth study of the

Lord’s Prayer in preparation for Confirmation. This class is for all students in grades 5-8 and will

be taught by Sean Golden and Deborah Soike in the Youth Room.

Our Trailblazers class will use the Sparks curriculum to study stories from both the Old and New

Testaments. This class is for all children in grades PreK-4, will be taught by parent volunteers,

and starts each week with music in Fellowship Hall before moving downstairs

to Room 4.

Our offering for Rally Sunday will be contributions for our own food pantry.

MORE MATTERS MONTH

Sweet Potato and Apple casserole

Ingredients

2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes

1 apple, with its skin; sliced (Granny Smith apples taste good in this recipe; however, most any apple except Red Delicious will work in a baked dish)

1/4 cup orange juice

2 tablespoons packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon margarine

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/3 cup dried cranberries or raisins

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease or spray with nonstick cooking spray a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish.

In a small sauce pan over medium heat, mix together the orange juice, brown sugar, margarine, cinnamon and dried cranberries or raisins. Heat and continue to stir until the sugar is dissolved and the margarine is melted.

In a large bowl, mix together the potatoes, apples and orange juice mixture.

Transfer to a casserole dish. Bake, covered, for one hour or until the potatoes are fork tender.

Stir the mixture before serving to coat the sweet potatoes and apples with the juices accumulated at the bottom.

Spiritually speaking, Matthew 22:37 also requires a lot of FOCUS! I made up an acronym that helps us to remem-ber that with God’s help we can stay focused on whatever we need to in order to stay physically and spiritually healthy. Staying focused requires strength higher than our own to accomplish God’s will.

F-Favor, O-Of, C-Christ, U-Uncovers, S-Strength (FAVOR OF CHRIST UNCOVERS STRENGTH). When we don’t think we can…God’s favor provides us with His strength. Philippians 4:13- “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

Matthew 22:37—Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your mind.” Sounds easy enough, right?

As children of God, sometimes it is just as difficult to follow Christ’s instructions as it was to follow the in-structions of our parents!

“EAT MORE VEGGIES”….I heard this a lot when I was growing up. Little did I know, mom knew what she was talking about! I don’t know about you, but for me, this required and still does require…FOCUS!!!

Parish Nurse Happenings at OSLC in September:

September 2nd—Women’s Self Defense Class; 10am during walk/talk- being taught by Johnson City Police Dept. to elderly ladies. Resources will be provided on how to defend yourself even when you are physically weak. Wear comfortable clothing. Open discussion. All are welcomed! No cost to take the class. Contact Melissa Malenda to register for the class.

September 6th—Health/Wellness committee will meet in the Library at 7:00pm.

September 13th—Friends in Grief- OSLC library. 10:00-11:00am

September 18th—Blood pressure clinic-free to anyone who wishes to have their blood pressure checked. Very im-portant and encouraged!

Ministries in Motion:

Thursday's—Yoga at 6:30pm-meets in the OSLC youth room. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you.

Friday's Walk/talk (Chair Yoga) at 10:00-11:00 am. Devotion, prayer, "joke of the week” in the fellowship hall.

“Care Bears” are available to all parishioners to take to family members, friends, or just anyone in need of TLC from OSLC. Please participate in this ministry because testimonies have proven that it is touching hearts!

Special thanks to the PDO staff for eagerly participating in the CPR class provided in August. You might just “save a life”!!! All of you did a great job and I appreciate the opportunity to teach this class.

It makes my job easier if I know what you need! If I can’t answer your question immediately, I will find the answer and or resource needed to help you.

Charity of the Month

Safe Passage

Safe Passage is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization serving Washington County, TN and surrounding counties as a shelter for victims of domestic violence. The services provided include: a 24-hour hotline, 24 hour shelter intake, collaboration with legal services and court advocates, counseling, emergency lodging, follow-up services for prior clients, outreach to at-risk individuals, goal planning, referral services, and trans-portation.

Congregational Picnic

September 18, 2016

Our annual celebration of the anni-versary of OSLC will take place this year on Sunday, September 18 at 4 p.m. at the Lion's Field Pavilion. This is the pavilion at Lion's Field Little League baseball field just behind the Johnson City Country Club. (The Harris pavilion where we usually meet is undergo-ing renovations and is unavailable.)

Everyone is invited to bring a main dish, and either a salad, vegetable, or dessert. Drinks and utensils, etc. will be provided.

After taking the summer off, the Hannah and Katie Circles will resume in September – all WELCA mem-bers are invited to attend one (or both) meetings!

* Hannah Circle will meet on Monday, 9/19 at 1pm. They will begin studying “Traveling Light” by Max Lucado. Please watch the Sunday bulletin for de-tails on location of meeting.

WELCA Sunday coming

Members of OSLC WELCA will lead the traditional service and preach at Heartsong on Sunday, Septem-ber 25. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear our own Pat Wolfe give an inspiring message – “WELCA exem-plifies John 3:16”.

Quilts and Personal Care Kits Ladies of OSLC packed 59 quilts into 5 boxes and 300 Per-sonal Care Kits into 12 boxes. These boxes will be sent for distribution to needy areas around the world. Stay tuned for their destinations.
