• 21st century skill integration is not implying we rewrite and revise our entire curriculum, but rather to “simply tweak what we already do and include more of these skills in our lessons and assessments” (Wheatly, et. al., 2010).
• We are going to look at 3 ways to integrate 21st century skills.
1. Purposeful integration as part of content instruction
2. Through creativity3. Project-based learning
Purposeful integration aspart of content instruction
• The Partnership for 21st century skills, in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and other leading groups for language, arts, geography, social studies, English, and math, have created 21st century skills maps.

Through creativity• “Many of the fastest growing jobs and
emerging industries rely on workers’ creative capacity, a 21st Century Skill” (Hernderson, 2008).
• More than capturing and displaying ideas• Involves the ability to…
1. think unconventionally 2. question others critically and thoughtfully3. imagine new scenarios
Project-Based Learning• As students participate in project-based
learning, they “flourish under this child-driven, motivating approach to learning and gain valuable skills that will build a strong foundation for their future in our global economy” (Bell, 2010).
• Integrates MANY 21st Century Skills1. self-directional
2. interpersonal, communication, and collaboration
3. critical thinking and problem solving
As stated by Steven Paine, West Virginia state superintendent, “For a long time, there have been two worlds that we prepare our kids for…, One has been the world of academia, and the other, quite frankly, has been the real world. What I see in 21st century learning is a blending of the two” (Khadroo and Clabaugh, 2009).
