It is a constant remark from studies that exercisemay prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, muscle pains, high blood pressure, obesity and osteoporosis. Additionally, a new research suggests another good thing about exercising, particularly to patients with bone and hip problems. Recently, a study published in the British Medical Journal finds that the metal-on-metal hip replacement cancer link might not be as clear as orthopedists originally believed.
According on a men’s health magazine, below are the top ten most commonly experienced sports injuries.
• Runner's Knee Injury• Shoulder Injury• Ankle Sprain• Tennis Or Golf Elbow• Pulled Muscle• Lower Back Pain• Shin Splints• Groin Strain• Concussion• Achilles Tendinitis
Released in April 2011, this study revealed that exercise can actually delay and even prevent hip replacement surgeries. The research work was funded by the Norwegian Foundation for Health and Rehabilitation, the Norwegian Rheumatism Association, and the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority.
A three-month exercise program shown to have significantly delayed and might even prevented hip replacements. This was done in a Norwegian randomized, controlled trial.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the time span to to total hip surgery in osteoarthritis patients. The 109 patients were between 40-80 years old who had mild to moderate hip pains and were not yet qualified for hip surgery. They participated in the exercise program. The patients were grouped into two.
While one group gone through both supervised exercise program and patient education, the other group just h ad patient education. The participants had three 90-minute educational discussions where they were encouraged to stay active even though they feel minor pains.
Within the first six years following the exercise program, 40% of the participants (22) had their hip replacement surgery. While in the control group, 57% of the patients (31) had their artificial hip surgery during the follow-up period.
Also, the exercise patients had significantly less pain and better mobility, not only in the spring 2011 but also during the earlier follow-up points.
"If you exercise early" in the course of the disease, "maybe you can prevent surgery long-term,” stated researcher Dr. Linda Fernandes, a physiotherapist at Diakonhjemmet Hospital in Oslo.
She added that "but that is just a theory. We can’t really say anything about cause and effect here.”
She further said that the next best step would be a larger randomized trial. In the meantime, the research team is analyzing the patients’ biomechanics to determine if they are related to the results of the study.
This recent information is especially essential to osteopoarthritis patients who encountered defective medical devices such as DePuy Pinnacle Hip Replacement System manufactured by Johnsons & Johnsons (J&J).
J&J faces a number of lawsuits amid allegations that DePuy metal-on-metal hip is prone to premature failure. At the moment, the DePuy Multidistrict Litigation contains hundred of cases. Expectedly, more DePuy lawsuit is going to be filed in the coming months. Legal observers say that the DePuy hip replacement recall should be an example to other manufacturing companies to ensure safety of their products.
