What do Inclusive Education Teachers in the Cairns Diocese do?Inclusive Education Teachers respond to requests from schools for support of students with disability who may require specialist educational support.

This support can take many forms including:

• Providing teaching strategies and pedagogy that support quality education programs for inclusion of students with disability

• Meeting with Parents

• Early intervention and screening

• Support the development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Education Adjustment Programs (EAP) within a school setting

• Ongoing monitoring of students

• Transition to Secondary and Post-Secondary programs

• Professional Development and Training for Diocesan Class Teachers and School Officers

• Maintain working knowledge of the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the Disability Standards for Education (2005) and QSA Curriculum

• Sourcing and producing high quality resources and strategies that promote inclusive practices.

Catholic Education Services Inclusive Practices Policy (2010)Catholic Education - Diocese of Cairns is committed to supporting schools in their work of fostering cultures of inclusion that respond to the educational needs of students regardless of their abilities, backgrounds and aspirations.

In addition, Catholic Education - Diocese of Cairns is committed to supporting schools to develop inclusive practices that are supportive of Church teaching and legislative requirements.

What is an Inclusive Education Teacher?Inclusive Education Teachers are experienced, qualified teachers who visit Diocesan schools to promote inclusive education, principally in supporting students with disabilities from Prep to Year 12.

Inclusive Education Teachers work with Class Teachers, Learning Support Teachers, School Administrators and Parents to develop and maintain supportive school environments in which verified students are equally valued and challenged as learners.

Inclusive Education Teachers work alongside CES Speech Language Therapists, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists to identify and

meet the educational needs of students with disabilities.
