• A European consortium, coordinated and led by Airbus, with the following objectives: compile a list of the main weather hazards

and their technical consequences on aircraft

perform a state of the art review of the research actions relating to these weather hazards

perform an in-depth analysis which will identify the gaps in the available knowledge, and the priority areas for improvement

provide a consolidated recommendation and roadmap report validated by the main stakeholders of the aeronautics community.

High Priorities Identified by WEZARD WP3

• Improved observations of eruptive column at source

• Additional measurements in downwind eruptive plume (close to the volcano)

• Enhanced capabilities for the monitoring of distal VA

• Ensure data exchange and data usability in near-real-time (NRT).

Integrated observing network – Why?

Existing projects and activities do NOT address need for integrated volcanic ash observing system with ground-based, airborne and space-borne measurement capabilities

Current over reliance on satellite observations.

Further R&D required:– Lidar and ceilometer networks– Aerosol sondes & drop sondes– Aircraft mounted systems– UAS mounted systems Existing capabilities currently mostly in

research mode or not available in NRT Differing data policies, standards, formats etc.

Why the EU and why another VA project?

• Why the EU?

– To ensure European-wide integration and harmonization

– EC DG-ECHO requirements

– ESFRI requirements

– Cross-industry, multi-discipline approach building on existing European infrastructures, projects and programmes

• Why another VA project?

– EVOSS

– FUTUREVOLC

– ESA funded projects

– Nationally funded projects.

Benefits and Future Applications

Operational Integrated Observing SystemA synergy of in-situ and remote sensing techniques

• Space-time evolution of volcanic events over large distances

• Provide sufficient observational validation methods e.g. use of in-situ data to help process remote sensing data

• Measurements from different sensors working in synergy.

• Data integration into dispersion models

• ‘Add value’ to raw model output for forecasters, and for post-event R&D

• Cross-industry end-user requirements e.g. SESAR links, airline SRAs, GMES etc
