Producers now have 87per cent of the crop seeded, well ahead of the five-year(2010-2014) average for thistime of year (61 per cent),according to SaskatchewanAgriculture's Weekly CropReport. Dry weather has al-lowed many producers to fin-ish seeding while others willneed another week or more.

The southwestern andwest-central regions are near-ing completion with 93 percent of the crop in theground. The northwesternregion has 89 per centseeded; the southeastern has87 per cent seeded; the east-central region has 83 percent seeded; and the north-eastern region has 75 percent seeded.

Little to no rain was re-ceived this week, with someareas in the northeastern re-gion reporting 2 mm. Top-soil moisture conditions oncropland are rated as fourper cent surplus, 58 per centadequate, 30 per cent shortand eight per cent very short.Hay land and pasture top-soil moisture is rated as fourper cent surplus, 49 per centadequate, 35 per cent shortand 12 per cent very short.

The majority of emergedcrops are either at or arebehind their normal devel-opmental stages for this timeof year. They are in relativelygood condition with mostcrop damage being caused byflea beetles, cutworms andlack of moisture. Despiteheavy frost in many areasearly last week, most cropswere not damaged; however, there has been some re-seed-ing of oilseed crops.

Pasture conditions arerated as four per cent excel-lent, 44 per cent good, 32 percent fair, 14 per cent poorand six per cent very poor.

In fear andhope the family made a har-rowing late night escapeacross the prairie in an over-loaded SUV, feeling safefrom pursuit only afterreaching the free city ofWeyburn. Rickee-Lee de-scribes the liberation she felthere in her thick, nearly in-comprehensible Calgary ac-cent, accompanied by expres-sive hand gestures. Her hus-band Jeremy, a native

Saskatchewitchian, trans-lates as required. "Here" shesays, arms waving, "peopleare so strange, so different, Iwant to capture them. Thestrange faces, the foreignatmosphere here is very at-tractive to me."

By contrast, Max Himslmakes his portraits in threedimensions but he too likesto use his friends as subjectmatter for is compositions."A lot of people ask me if mymedications are up to datebut no, no, I'm mister natu-ral," says Max "so naturally I

Give me a break

In the Church year, the time from Advent through the Day of Pentecost and TrinitySunday is the season for lifting up the birth, life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus. We also celebrate that He sends the Holy Spirit and gives the great commission to makedisciples. As we study all that God has done, we see how undeserving we are, yet receive thelove of God in our Savior, Jesus. We learn and receive the forgiveness of our sin through theWord of God and His Sacraments.

But now we are in the second half. From the Second Sunday after Pentecost we enter, what is often called, the Church's half of the year. The theme for this half is "make disciples".The color for altar cloths is green, the color suggesting growth. After receiving the grace ofGod in Christ, we are now invited to share that message with everyone. But often summer isa drought for faith and not growing. The first hope is for growth in the faith of the membersof Christ's body, the Church. As they have heard the invitation of Jesus to make disciples, they recall the grace of God in the forgiveness of sins, and begin to see how this takes place intheir lives. This Good News is so overwhelming that they will try to show this to all they meet.Their lives reflect the love of God. They do not try to overpower anyone, but to show themhow Jesus overcame the world with His innocent death, and brought new life, His love, in Hisresurrection. But love is hard to live because we may be open to being used like Jesus. Forsome, the summer months become anything but a time of growth of faith or a time ofpositive witnessing for Jesus. Faith may deteriorate because there is less desire to worshipregularly. The cabin or lakes or other "events" call us loudly, and we put our faith in Jesus onthe "back burner" or "on hold". But even this may not be true. For the "back burner" stillheats, but often the faith cools so much in the summer that it all but disappears. A coolingbreeze feels good on a hot summer's night, but the cooling of faith can be disastrous. We maydistance ourselves from active faith. "After all, it is our vacation." Above, I mentioned thewords "positive witnessing for Jesus." The disaster that might happen in summer is thatothers see our lack of commitment to Jesus in our lack of prayer, worship, and living theGospel. We "leave the team" for "our" time of the year. Revelation 3:14-22 quotes Jesusspeaking to the church of Laodicea. He ways that, since they are neither hot nor cold, theywill be spit out. They thought that they were rich and needed nothing, but did not know thatthey were pitiful, poor, blind and naked. He invites them to repent, saying to the church,"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I willcome in to him and eat with him and he with Me." This tells me that I must open the doorof my faith to allow Jesus to live through me every day, summer included. One problem isthat many who read this are active in faith. If this is so, show this to a fellow member, so thateach can live the Gospel for others. Pray that others will commit their lives to Jesus. To live, show and tell the Good News!

In compiling the list of po-tential attendees there are afew vital things to be consid-ered: How do an individualor group of people qualify tomake the list? If I ask PersonA, does that mean I am obli-gated to invite that person'scolleague? If so, why or whynot? What are the politicalor financial implications ofleaving Person B off the list? You get the idea and, believeme, creating a guest list willno longer be viewed as simplya matter of jotting down thefirst names that come tomind.

What the process doesbring to mind, however, is

the sermon our pastorpreached this morning. Mymusings: Jesus invites us toenjoy the fullness of Hisblessing but there is nothingwe do can make ourselvesworthy of such an invitation. His guest list will never be toolong, the venue never toosmall and the provision forour every need, never ex-hausted. And everyone iswelcome!

"Behold, I stand at thedoor and knock; if anyonehears and listens to andheeds My voice and opensthe door, I will come in tohim and will eat with him,and he [will eat] with me."Rev 3:20 (AMP)

bag of Spitz and enough patience to get you through a teenage boy's baseball practice.(Mosquitoes aren't the only pests on the field). Besides coaching and managing a team, equipment needs to be bought, jerseys to be ordered, registration forms sent in, money to becollected, fields need to be maintained and my least favorite of all, painting lines.

We have a great group of ladies who fly solo at this time of year and still manage to get itall done despite the circumstances. One such instance is my attempt at using the sprayer topaint the lines in the soccer field. It did not come with an instruction booklet, GPS or autosteer (let alone air conditioning). I spent hours just cleaning the machine, unplugging thenozzles , filling it up, only to have it quit working and spray more paint on me than the soccerfield. This sprayer wasn't the only thing experiencing a breakdown.

Trying to do it all, planting a garden, coaching ball, managing soccer, heading off to workand my much dreaded painting lines experience, all led me to one thought. I need a break.I can't do it all. I am trying to do way too much in far too many places at once.

That's when the irony set in. Less than five minutes after I had this thought, I walked intomy office and my co-worker said "Your sister-in-law was here. She left you a KitKat bar. It'son your desk. "

I had to giggle. If you haven't heard it before, the theme song for this chocolate bar is"Gimme a break, gimme a break. Break me off a piece of that piece of KitKat Bar."

It's funny how the universe delivers exactly what you ask for.So what's a gal to do? I sat back, relaxed and had a KitKat Bar, maybe two, and played the

song "If I had a million dollars".

Buy local starts June 6The Government of Saskatchewan would like to encourage all residents to support the

proclamation to "buy local" the first Saturday of every month."We value the contribution of local businesses in communities across the province, and for

that reason, want to encourage Saskatchewan residents to buy local," Immigration, Jobs, Skillsand Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "It's a gesture of support for all those smallbusinesses that work hard, create jobs and provide us with goods and services year-round."

There are about 150,000 people employed in small business in Saskatchewan, which isabout 30 per cent of the province's total labour force. A proclamation to celebrate the smallbusiness sector and the importance of buying local came into force on May 11 of this year.

"I would encourage Saskatchewan residents to shop local every day, but particularly on thefirst Saturday of every month, beginning this week on June 6," Harrison said.

Sun Country Regional Health Authority approves balanced budgetSun Country Regional Health Authority approved a balanced budget of more than $153

million for the 2015-16 fiscal year at its regular board meeting Wednesday, May 27. Thehold-the-line budget will aim to improve patient flow and senior's care and strengthenmental health services while reducing some staff travel and administration budgets.

The principle of restraint was applied to the governing Regional Health Authority as wellas the Sun Country Health Region administration. The RHA's operating budget was re-duced by about eight per cent for next year's operations.

"Sun Country Regional Health Authority appreciates the diligence and analytical work byadministration to develop a budget that continues to address the Patient First Report, improves patient and family-centred care, and supports our daily improvement work usingLean to address patient safety," says Marilyn Charlton, Chair, Sun Country Regional HealthAuthority.

One example of Lean improvements is reorganization of the regional equipment steriliza-tion process at Weyburn General Hospital. Defects in the process were reduced by 100 percent, leading to a safer process for patients, residents and clients.

A second example is the $180,000 reduction in inventory costs in the regional materialmanagement department over the past two years as a result of Lean projects that reorga-nized the process for ordering supplies.

The Region is facing increasing demand for medical and surgical supplies, higher mainte-nance and laboratory costs, higher utility costs in the three new, larger long term carefacilities, increased costs due to expanding ultrasound services, and additional primaryhealth care and chronic disease management.

Cost savings will come from an expected reduction in staff sick days and overtime as theattendance management program focusses on reduced staff injuries and earlier return towork plans for staff.

New programs expected this fall include CT services in St. Joseph's Hospital of Estevan, and increases to the ultrasound services in St. Joseph's Hospital of Estevan and WeyburnGeneral Hospital.

A capital budget of $1.3 million for new and replacement equipment purchases for 28facilities and community programs has been approved.

"This is a tight budget that allows for balanced growth in some service areas, consistentwith our population growth and the need for updated technology. The Region also ispleased to have received funding to start the planning for a new hospital in Weyburn," saysMarga Cugnet, President and CEO, Sun Country Health Region.

Letter to the EditorIt is coming up to a year since Arctic's rescue. I feel obli-

gated to let everyone who showed concern for, and aided inthe rescue and care of Arctic, how she has flourished sinceher release. Especially Brooke and Ashley, who were crucialto Arctic's survival, taking immediate action to save her. I amsure Arctic would have succumbed to the conditions of herexistence if she had been imprisoned much longer.

Arctic is doing well and enjoying her new home. Her coatis now thick and long. I used a leash to train her to go intothe back yard, which is not completely enclosed. Being a veryquick learner, she was following the other dogs in and out ofthe house without a leash within weeks. She enjoys her free-dom, bolting fence to fence, and thinking maybe, just maybe,if she really jumps hard, she can actually get that squirrelthat teases her from the tree.

Arctic initially suffered separation anxiety, even with 2other dogs around. Our heating massaging recliner is nowjust a plain old recliner because both cords have disappeared(thinking maybe this was a joint effort with the other dogs). The humidifier bothered her, so that cord disappeared afew days later. And no, she did not get in trouble for theseactions, we simply cleaned up the pieces left on the floor, and chuckled about it (we have had worse happen fromother rescue dogs). Her actions while we picked up pieces, told us she knew she had erred. Oh, and the "wireless" speak-ers - well, are completely wireless.

She plays tug-of-war with the other 2 dogs, and because ofthe size differences, Arctic's hardest pulls never win. She pes-ters the mastiff, chews his ears and haunches, but he toler-

ates her. She drops toys in front of them to tease them.To relax after a hard play, she enjoys stretching out ontop of the coffee table to watch t.v., animal or actionshows preferred.

Arctic remains very timid of objects like brooms or shov-els, loud noises, and unfamiliar people. She has yet to at-tempt stairs, being quite content to watch any activity fromthe top. It took a significant amount of time to regain hertrust of the human touch, but she now loves to snuggle andtummy rubs. She will nudge your hand if you stop.

Her leg doesn't bother her when she runs in the yard, orjumps around the furniture. She did favor it on extremelycold days. It is shorter than her other front leg, so she doeslimp and is clumsy at times.

All factors taken in to account, Arctic is a loving andbeautiful dog. She is very active, which is partly her breed(American Eskimo), and partly the pup remaining in her.My last 4 dogs were rescue dogs, so I am well aware of thetime and patience required to regain a mistreated dog's trust.

I still cannot understand how anyone can harm or neglectan animal. Dogs are such loyal animals and would do any-thing for their owner, but some are so easily discarded whenthe novelty wears off or the puppy grows up. PLEASE re-search the type of dog you want. Identify the personality, activity level, and the care required. And if you have to relin-quish ownership of your pet, and have exhausted all av-enues to find them a new home, PLEASE take them to ashelter, where they get a chance at a healthy and happy life, instead of almost certain death when abandoned.

Rescue dogs seem to have a heightened sense of loyalty. They just seem to know when they have been given that sec-ond chance, and maybe this loyalty is their way of showing

their appreciation, and saying "Thank You". I conclude witha single word, which I am sure Arctic would echo if able tospeak.

"Why?"Ruth Gammack

Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA and Minister of Health, Dustin Duncan, tossed out the first pitch at theWeyburn Beavers season opener on May 28.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Two quotes. That's all you need. Just two simple quotes. As we embark on a brand new football season with the

Saskatchewan Roughriders and finally put 2014 in thepast, there are only two people we need to hear from.

The first comes from quarterback Darian Durant whowas leading the Riders to a nearly franchise-best 8-2 startlast year when he suffered a season-ending elbow injury inearly September which sent the club into a tailspin. Theywent 2-7 the rest of the way including a distasteful firstround playoff exit in Edmonton.

With nine months to recover, which included a strongshowing in the team's minicamp in Florida in April, Durantis now feeling 100%. He took to social media on themorning of Day 1 of 2015 Roughrider training camp inSaskatoon to reassure the antsy Rider Nation.

"So blessed to be able to be able to do what I love for aliving," Durant wrote from his Twitter account at@DarianDurant. "Still feel like a kid going into my 10thcamp!!"

That's music to our ears and Durant got the bulk ofthe work with the first team offense Sunday as he contin-ues to test out his arm and get acclimated to new offen-sive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. He passed bothwith flying colours.

The other guy you need to hear from is head coachCorey Chamblin who enters his fourth season in chargeon the Rider sidelines. Along with General ManagerBrendan Taman, Chamblin was tireless in building a ros-ter which he believes will be in the 2015 Grey Cup inWinnipeg in November.

"I think it's different," Chamblin said, referring to hisroster makeup from one year ago. "I think in some areaswe're a little bit better and that's just a part of coachingand personnel and different things. When we looked atit, we addressed different issues. Sometimes it's not whatwe didn't find, it was what was available. I think this yearthere was a different set of guys available to us."

Chamblin's talking about the pool of available freeagents and veterans on the trade market which he care-fully selected for his locker room. Grey Cup championslike receiver Jamel Richardson, middle linebacker SheaEmry, defensive end Alex Hall and defensive back KeenanMcDougall were all added to bolster the lineup and pro-vide the unteachable intangible of "knowing how to win".

The club enters the 2015 CFL campaign with only oneglaring question mark and it's along the invaluable offen-sive line where games are often won and lost. Veterancentre Dominic Picard was cut loose this winter and starright tackle Ben Heenan was lost to the NFL's Indianapo-lis Colts. Those are two important holes which the club ishoping to fill by unproven younger players.

However the backbone of the team starts with the headcoach and ends with the quarterback. If you have twocornerstones in place in those spots, you're in good shape.Down south, New England has the trusted tandem ofBellichick and Brady while Seattle has the solid pair ofCarroll and Wilson. The good teams all do. Chamblinand Durant have the same credentials with champion-ship rings along with Coach of the Year and MVP awardson their resumes.

The core is strong. Who knows how the 2014 seasonwould have ended up had Durant stayed healthy? We'llnever know the answer to that and perhaps we can finallystop thinking about it.

No, the time for optimism is now. Here in early Juneeveryone is tied for first-place and every team feels goodabout the club they've assembled.

Pretty soon we'll board the always-entertaining rollercoaster that is Roughrider season and I hope you'll bealong to follow the club's fortunes every step of the way.

(Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders and can be hearddaily on 620 CKRM's SportsCage at 4:00 pm acrossSaskatchewan.)

Chapter President, Shelly-AnneMckay said, "Ruth is known as Canada's Oldest MotorcycleGranny as she was one of the first women to travel acrossCanada back in 1942 on her Harley Davidson which shenamed "Pinky". Jeeves who is now in her late 90's spent al-most eight decades riding and traveling the highways on hermotorcycle.

Jeeves recalls selling Pinky to raise money to save her familyfarm many years ago. She missed her motorcycle so much, that in the 1980's Jeeves decided to write into CTV's hittelevision show called "Thrill of a Lifetime". She shared howshe would love to once again be able to get on a 1942 HarleyDavidson, exactly like Pinky and put a few miles on. Shortlythereafter Jeeves was invited to Toronto and was granted theopportunity to ride "Pinky II" a 1942 Harley Davidson ex-actly like her original, which they let her ride around the citywhile they filmed her having the thrill of a lifetime! She waseven more thrilled when at the end of the show they GAVEher the motorcycle to keep. Jeeves said, "I was crying all overthat host with tears of joy". Jeeves sold Pinky II just a coupleof years ago to a fellow from Alberta who visits her regularlywhen passing through the area.

The Highway Hunnies are looking forward to meetingRuth in person this weekend. They will honor her and herriding history as she shares some of her favorite motorcyclememories with the ladies. Mckay said, "We are thrilled tomeet Ruth in person and hope that when we all show up onour motorcycles that we bring back some good memoriesand bring a big smile to her face. We wanted to give her theopportunity to live vicariously through us once again - evenif just for an hour".

The Highway Hunnies consist of 17 full-patch womenmembers ranging in age from 35 to 70 and they call them-selves a true "sisterhood". There are several other ladies thatalso ride with the group as their time allows. The June 7event is open to all lady riders, all experience levels and allmakes and models of motorcycles.
