DESCRIPTION
A guide to Milaukee's most decorative neighborhoodsTRANSCRIPT
Welcome to the westsideWelcome to Milwaukee’s Westside
Have you ever wished you knew more about the fun and interesting things happening in your neighborhood? Information is available in random fragments all over the web at lightning speed, yet fail to reveal a true context. This guide is an inside story of Milwaukee’s most distinct group of neighborhoods and the can-do individuals and groups that make this area a destination to live, work, own a business, shop and play.
The Milwaukee Westside is loosely situated around Washington Park, see foldout map in center of the brochure. With Washington Park as the heart, the region branches out in all directions, fading out at Bluemound Road to the south, 76th street and Tosa Village to the west, Burleigh Street to the North, and 27th Street to the east. These boundaries are fluid borders that blend and mix as thriving locales do.
Much of this area was established before the automobile became a significant means of movement, therefore these neighborhoods have an exceptional regard for the human scale. Many residents describe it as a big city with a small town feel, and others who have since relocated remember this area with great pleasure. Fundamental to a flourishing area is its location. Situated between downtown Milwaukee and its largest suburbs, the Milwaukee Westside has become a central and affordable stopping place.
You are encouraged to keep and share this brochure and explore these neighborhoods blooming with fresh ideas and culture, take in the arts, music, and recreation. The Westside is a great place to shop, dine, work and live.
Thank you for perusing the inaugural issue of the Westside Guide 2012-13. Come see what we’re all about.
Best,

Each Westside resident can be a dynamic force for the area, but we’re even more
powerful through the efforts of the neighborhood groups, advocacy organizations and non-profit associations that multiply individual efforts. Their leadership provides an effective way for all of us to advance the issues we deeply care about.

6 Westside Guide • Education, Schools & Faith
Whether teaching about science or teaching about spirituality –
or a combination of both – our Westside religious and educational institutions are witness to our shared values. The schools that gather our children and the houses of worship that gather believers provide the spirit of hope that helps us look to the future.
“This is the sum of all -- righteousness. In causing
pleasure or in giving pain, in doing good or injury
to others, a man obtains a proper rule of action by
looking at his neighboras himself.”
~The Mahabharta

PARKS & GARDENS
Parks & Gardens • Westside Guide 11
Milwaukee thrives on its green spaces, and the
Westside is no exception! The sparkling jewel is Washington Park, with Wick Field providing a sports and recreation landmark. Other organizations provide the equipment and services for clean and green living.
“If we were sincerely looking for a place of safety, for real
security and success, then we would begin to turn to our communities – and not the communities simply of our human neighbors but also of the water, earth, and air, the plants and animals, all
the creatures with whom our local life is shared.”
~Wendell Barry

ARTISTS, STUDIOS, GALLERIES & CREATIVE SERVICES
The Westside not only has a variety of studios for creating visual art,
it also has many galleries that display our neighbors’ finest works. Even better, it’s home to several artist resource organizations that keep the creativity flowing.
“Although most of us know Vincent
van Gogh in Arles and Paul Gauguin in Tahiti as if they were
neighbors -- somewhat disreputable but
endlessly fascinating -- none of us can name
two French generals or department store
owners of that period. I take enormous pride in considering myself
an artist, one of the necessaries.”

WESTSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS
16 Westside Guide • Westside Neighborhoods
ENDERIS PARKNEIGHBORHOODEnderis Park Neighborhood is a true oasis for city dwellers, where you will find residents walking dogs, jogging, pushing baby strollers and biking. The beautiful mostly brick housing dates from the 1930s and 1940s. The cultural heart of the neighborhood is the Enderis Playfield, named for Dorothy Enderis, a public recreation pioneer. To this day, the park remains a grounding center for the neighborhood with picnics, concerts and neighborhood activities. Neighbors rallied to raise money to install “Magic Grove,” a monumental steel sculpture by Wisconsin artist Nancy Metz White, providing neighbors an even more colorful place to gather in the Park. There is a rich sense of the past combined with the vibrancy of the present.
HISTORIC CONCORDIA NEIGHBORHOODThe Historic Concordia Neighborhood’s rich history dates back to 1850 when settlers created large estates on what was then the Watertown Plank Road. After that, it attracted the rich and powerful of the Victorian era who built spectacular homes and mansions. Most of these homes have survived intact for more than a hundred years. Each home was designed to stand apart from the rest for some of Milwaukee’s most prominent families and designed by some of the most accomplished architects in the country. Over the years, this showplace neighborhood
showed the tarnish of age and was all but forgotten as Milwaukee grew larger. Today, Historic Concordia is undergoing a revival. The neighborhood has been listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, and designated as Milwaukee’s Bed and Breakfast District. There’s a new spirit in the air, and great optimism from residents. Diverse and caring families have moved back to the neighborhood to purchase and restore the homes and mansions to their former glory. People from the suburbs are beginning to discover what longtime residents have known for years: commutes to work are minutes, not hours here; housing dollars go much further; and old-world craftsmanship has a value beyond dollars and cents today.
MARTIN DRIVENEIGHBORHOODThe Martin Drive Neighborhood is a small, safe and affordable neighborhood on the Westside of Milwaukee, fortuitously located between beautiful Washington Park to the North and historic Miller Valley to the South. Due to its tucked away location, the Martin Drive Neighborhood is quiet and surprisingly free of traffic. Its mainly one-way, tree-lined streets are often host to joggers, dog walkers and groups of children at play.
The Martin Drive Neighborhood is very accessible and centrally located. Only minutes from downtown Milwaukee, the neighborhood brushes against Wauwatosa to the west and it is a quick hop onto the freeway. Additionally, two large parks, a public pool, the Washington Park Library, cafes, restaurants and a number of unique shops are all within walking distance.
One of the most attractive aspects of the Martin Drive Neighborhood is a diverse and active group of residents, many of whom are involved in the close-knit neighborhood association. The Martin Drive Neighborhood Association continually works to increase communication among neighbors, encouraging them to join in community projects and always striving to become the best neighborhood possible!
SHERMAN PARKNEIGHBORHOODSherman Park is one of Milwaukee’s premier, culturally diverse, historic neighborhoods, offering some of the finest value in high-quality housing anywhere in the Milwaukee area. Block after block of beautifully maintained boulevards are lined with gracious, historic homes, featuring the highest concentration of brick and lannon stone homes in the city. Homes typically reflect a pride in craftsmanship that is rare today, including leaded and stained glass, intricate woodwork, and distinctive fireplaces. The housing stock in Sherman Park includes large duplexes, perfect for the owner-occupant seeking additional income; attractive and solidly built bungalows for the first-time buyer or small family; and uniquely styled larger, architecturally significant single family homes for established buyers or or those “trading up.”
During every season of the year, the Sherman Park neighborhood is abuzz with activity. Residents spend lots of time tending their yards and recently many residents have added lighting to their yards and garage areas. In the summer months, there are numerous block parties, picnics in the park and live music concert series. In the
WESTSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS

summer months, there are numerous block parties, picnics in the park and live music concert series. In the winter, neighbors often help each other shovel.
Sherman Park’s easily accessible location is another plus since the neighborhood is minutes from downtown, on the doorstep of Miller Park (home of the Milwaukee Brewers), and close to major Westside employers, including Miller-Coors, Harley-Davidson, St. Joseph’s Hospital and many more. The active Sherman Park Community Association, composed of residents, businesses and institutions has the goal of supporting and promoting a good quality of life in the neighborhood by focusing on quality housing, diversity and safety.
UPTOWN CROSSINGNEIGHBORHOODUptown Crossing is a vibrant mosaic of residents, families, businesses and neighborhood stakeholders within the broader boundaries of Sherman Park. The central commerce district is literally at the “crossing” of
two transforming thoroughfares: North and Lisbon Avenues – where the Uptown Theater once drew large movie audiences years before and the communications center for the Milwaukee Police Department now stands. Uptown Crossing is known as much for its sense of community (regular summer block parties, Christmas Caroling, enrichment activities, gardening get-togethers and more) as it is for the historic
bungalow architecture that sets this area apart. A public library, pizza restaurant, Asian grocery store, Irish pub, two major parks and active churches are all within walking distance.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTSNEIGHBORHOODWashington Heights Neighborhood on the western border of Milwaukee and Washington Park is described as a neighborhood, “In the City – Out of the Ordinary!” While the neighborhood is only minutes from downtown and close urban amenities, this area was once considered remote. It is characterized by its 1920s Arts and Crafts housing stock and stately homes lining Washington Boulevard a grand parkway that leads to the ever favorite Olmsted Park.
The Washington Heights Neighborhood Association is one of the strongest neighborhood groups within the city, hosting many annual activities including a Boulevard Bash, Easter Egg Hunt, Rummage Sale, Haloween Spooktacular and Wine Tastings. Another annual event is the The Great Unveiling in mid-May. This event is like a reverse barn-raising where neighbors pitch in to remove old vinyl or aluminum siding from a house, setting the stage for a “re-birth” exposing the vintage exterior of a home. In Washington Heights, there is no shortage of quality housing stock or community spirit and neighborliness.
TOSA VILLAGEThere’s a distinct European feel in the heart of the Village of Wauwatosa, brought here by the first settlers in the mid 1800s. Pedestrian-friendly stores and restaurants with seasonal outdoor dining are reminiscent of the great villages of Europe. The Village of Wauwatosa exudes historic charm with its vintage architecture while simultaneously conveying contemporary flare and intrigue with its wide array of over 126 retail shops, restaurants, bars, and businesses.

WESTSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS
18 Westside Guide • Westside Neighborhoods
WALNUT HILLNEIGHBORHOODThe Walnut Hill Neighborhood was in a major corridor of expansion as the heavily German neighborhoods of the Northside rapidly grew. By the 1910s, the 30th St industrial corridor was lined with factories and was also the dividing line between the streetcar and auto-era suburbs. The industries of the corridor provided area residents jobs within walking distance, while Lisbon Avenue, a former plank road first constructed c.1850, Vliet St. and North Ave. provided the pre-WWII neighborhood with its commercial needs.
Today, Walnut Hill continues to welcome new residents, in part due to the work of many local churches. While the neighborhood maintains a large majority of African Americans, it is also home to the greatest concentration of Hmong, as well as an emerging Somali and Burmese population.
Institutions within the Walnut Hill Neighborhood’s boundaries include Westside Academy, Fitzimonds Boys & Girls Club, and Our Next Generation. The work of local non-profits such as Lisbon Avenue Neighborhood Development, United Methodist Children’s Services, Habitat For Humanity, ACTS CDC as well as MPS, has brought significant improvements to the area over the past two decades and continues into the 21st Century.Along Lisbon Avenue, Kehrs Candies has been a neighborhood institution for more than two generations, while Family Dental and more recently Amaranth Bakery are well-known destinations, while an emerging artistic community, with Express Yourself Milwaukee as its locus, is helping to take Walnut Hill into the future.

WASHINGTON PARKPARTNERSWashington Park Partners is a community-led effort of diverse partners working together to build a thriving a neighborhood. The partnership consists of neighborhood residents, businesses, organizations and other stake holders. The vision for the Washington Park Neighborhood is of a thriving community where people want to live, learn, work, visit and play. To implement this vision, the partners have created a Sustainable Communities Plan with action steps in seven categories: Housing, Business & Jobs, Arts & Culture, Safety, Education, the Park, and Health & Wellness.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTSRAINBOW ASSOCIATIONWashington Heights Rainbow Association is available to foster a better understanding of gay and lesbian residents within the larger Washington Heights Neighborhood and provide support to its members.
There are no annual memberships or participant dues. Members are encouraged to attend planning meetings, help with events, and participate in a variety of community endeavors.
Members have enjoyed Brewer Game outings, Packer parties with neighborhood Rainbow groups, holiday/seasonal parties, and “Pridesfest” staffing as well as supporting other neighborhood groups and projects.

GOOD THINGS TO EAT
There’s no taste like neighborhood cooking! Italian, German, French,
Mexican – several ethnic food styles have a home on the Westside. They’re located right next to traditional American fare and exquisite restaurants serving food that draws people from around the city. Throw in a variety of live music venues, and you’ve got a night on the town!
“Nothing makes you more tolerant of a neighbor’s
noisy party than being there.” ~Franklin Jones

26 Westside Guide • Good Things To Eat
Our Westside small businesses reflect the needs of the
community, and they’re often operated by people who walk to the store or office right from home. So many needs are met right here – from services such as financial planning and real estate to shops such as hardware stores and one-of-a-kind boutiques. You can’t do it all – why not hire a neighbor?
“When strangersstart acting
like neighbors...communities are
reinvigorated.”~Ralph Nader

While the Westside is known for its residential feel, we’re able to
support industrial businesses. From international icons with decades of production to new companies and small businesses, manufacturing is a Milwaukee mainstay and the 30th Street Industrial Corridor offers opportunity for more.

No one appreciates the beauty of the Westside
architecture as much as the contractors who service them. Using skills often passed down through generations, these craftsmen and women keep our homes in tip-top shape.
