n the spring of 1982historic grand prixcompetitor and engineer,Chris Smith decided todesign and build a replicaof one of his all-time

favourite race cars, thegorgeous 1956 Lotus XI LeMans car. Such was theaccuracy and beauty of thecar he produced in his homegarage at Westfield House,Armatage he was immediatelyinundated with requests fromenthusiasts wanting one forthemselves.

By the following Easter in1983 the company WestfieldSportscars had been created.Further demand for the newWestfield XI replica kit meantbigger premises and staffwere required and thefledgling sportscar companywas under way.

From the outset Chris andbusiness partner and wife,Eileen recognised theimportance of constantlyreinvesting in productdevelopment. Furthermoreevery aspect of the cars from

the chassis to the seats andinterior trim would all bedesigned and built entirely in-house to ensuring both highquality and value for money. This is an ethos thatcontinues today and setsWestfield head and shouldersabove any other product inthe kit car industry

After the introduction of anew car, the equally wellreceived Westfield 7SE, adecision was taken to fade outthe XI allowing the team toconcentrate on production ofthe new kit. The companycontinued expanding rapidlyto cope with ever growingdemand, which became evenstronger after the bodyworkwas redesigned andmoderised. Westfield was now firmly established as abig player.

In 1991, Westfield againneeded bigger premises andmoved to the impressivefactory and office block inKingswinford where it is stillmanufacturing today. It washere that the incredible V8-powered SEIGHT first causedthe earth to shake. Withmonster power and anincredible 0-60mph time of3.6 seconds it was Wesfield’sfastest machine thus far andreceived critical acclaim fromthe motoring press.

It would be hard to follow acar like that but Westfieldwent on to become one of thefirst car manufacturers toharness bike power. Thesmall, but very powerful andhigh revving machinesenabled incredible feats ofspeed and agility and offeredfantastic performance at a lowprice.

In October 2004, inresponse to a constant flow ofenquiries, the XI wasreintroduced. The car proveda massive hit once again, witha full order book andrapturous praise from newowners.

In December 2006, thecompany entered a new stageof its development whenBritish owned Potenza SportsCars Ltd acquired it. Theresulting inward investmentwill take the development ofthe company to new andexciting levels whilst ensuringthat its products consistentlyredefine the quality, engineering and technologystandards within the kit carindustry.

Westfield remains a familyrun, UK based manufacturer. Its skilled and highly trainedworkforce will continue toproduce high qualitycraftsmanship in every aspectof production.

Bike or car engines? These two power plants have very different drivingcharacteristics in terms of both delivery and handling. Bytheir very nature bike engines are considerably smallerand lighter than car engines, therefore reducing theoverall weight of the car and allowing a high power toweight ratio (480bhp/tonne for the Megabusa), which inturn produces rapid acceleration and impressive levels ofagility through the corners.

To produce a high specific output from just 1.3-litres ithas to rev much higher than a car engine, maximumpower (178bhp for the Megabusa) is reached at a heady9800rpm. Car engines have more torque low down onthe rev range making them easier to drive around townand more comfortable when touring. Bike engine carsdeliver their biggest thrills when being driven flat outwhen they are fast, frenetic and uncompromising.

For that reason bike engine cars are more suited tothe track than the road and here their sequentialgearboxes add another dimension to the performance.Using the bike gearbox and clutch at slow speeds on theroad does take a little getting used to as it’s action isnot as smooth and easy as that of car engines. Due totheir design the life expectancy of a bike unit is shorterthan that of a car, but they offer huge performance at alow price. However as explained it is very different typeof performance and you should carefully consider bothoptions before making a final choice.

n the mid-late fifties thesleek Lotus powered by theCoventry Climax engine wasthe car to have if you

wanted to win and it becameWestfield’s first ever replica kitin 1982. Chris Smith’s aim wasnot only to ape the beautifulstreamlined styling but toprovide drivers with sameperiod feel from behind thebeautifully trimmed cockpit.

And now due to a constantstream of requests to bring itback, it’s available all overagain. However in trueWestfield tradition new mouldsand updated jigs weredeveloped, giving the originalkit at the quality enthusiastshave come to expect from theWestfield factory.

The kits are very compre-hensive and the body is already

attached to the chassis for you,so all you need to do is clear aspace in your garage and huntdown either a 1275cc Midget oran Austin Healy Sprite donorcar and start building.

Once complete you will be theproud owner of one of theprettiest cars ever to grace LeMans and you’ll have thesatisfaction of having built ityourself.

The wide body SEi is set tobecome a real head-turnerwith an all new, slender yetaggressive look that adds amodern twist to the classictheme that has become such ahit with sports car drivers.

Being a fast reacting hand-built British car manufacturerWestfield were able to respondto request from owners fornew contemporary lines andsleek, dramatic curves.Reaction from the motoringpress has already beenpositive and it’s certain to be ahit with current and futurecustomers.

Known as the FW or FeatherWeight, the nose cone andbonnet are now all one piece, hinging forward in a sweepingarc from the base of the nose

and this not only removes theusual shut line it also allowsthe large nostril engine ventsto moved into that areamaking them more effectivefor engine cooling.

At the rear the Westfielddesign team has continued themodern theme with a startlingnew look that matches thespeed and performance of thecar itself. Gone is the squared-off tail, replaced by newcurves, lights, a squarenumber plate holder and asmall spoiler lip at the top.

This new shape will sit nextto the current models as anoptional extra across therange and is also available asan aftermarket option forexisting customers whoalready own a SEiWide.
