GOLF OPERATIONS REPORT
By: Kendall Costain
The Club is again offering free golf for September and October for new
members when you sign up for your 2015 membership. This is a great
opportunity for family and friends who are thinking of joining next year
to extend their golf season for two months at 2014 rates.
The long range forecast is looking great for September, which will be
great for the many events that are planned for this Month. Please check
our calendar for the dates and time of the events. The Elimination Draw
event will be on Saturday, September 27th
, 2014 this will be a very
exciting time for WGCC, and could have a huge influence on the future
success of our Club. Please support this worthy cause as the benefits
will enhance your membership.
Knowing the season of highs and lows, I’m still very proud of all the
staff for their hard work, and dedication. I’m especially proud of the
greens staff, knowing the amount of extra work I’ve put on them, and
being short-handed they did a fantastic job. Five full time staff looking
after an 18 hole golf course is a lot of hard work, it takes dedication,
passion, and the will to succeed to give the members and visitors a great
conditioned golf course.
September in my opinion is the best month for golf so please, come out
and enjoy the beautiful weather, scenery and create some memories that
last a life time.

PRO SHOP NOTES
By: Stephen LeBlanc
Summer is slowly winding down. I tend to divide the golf season into
two sections, pre Molson and post Molson. Although we are still getting
some amazing weather and the course is really coming along nicely.
Plenty of great golfing days left.
We recently had our course record smashed by the same person who
held the previous course record. Neil Roberts shot a 10 under, 59 on
Thursday, August 21, 2014 while playing a NFH Club Championship
match against Mike Byrne. Neil carded 11 birdies, 6 pars and 1 bogey.
The 5 time Club Champion shot the previous course record of 62, twelve
times before going 3 shots deeper for 59. Congrats Neil!
The 17th
Annual Molson Canadian Cup was a huge success again this
year. We had two perfect days of sun for the participants, who all
seemed to enjoy themselves and many who commented on the great
shape of the golf course along with the food and service in the
clubhouse. I would like to thank Barry Reid and Kevin Carson who did a
fantastic job organizing the event. We had some hard working
volunteers and junior forecaddies as well that helped make the event run
smoothly. A huge thanks to all involved. The overall champions were
Shane McCullum and Shawn Branch. The net winners were Billy Walsh
and Andrew King.
The ticket sales for the 15 year membership are going well. If you
haven’t purchased your ticket yet, please stop by the Pro Shop and pick
one up. Lots of great prizes to be won and the money is going right back
into the golf course. Please remind all nonmembers that the prizes are
transferable as well and that they will receive their green fee for free if
they purchase the ticket on the day of their round.

LADIES ASSOCIATION
By: Cheryl Price
Autumn golf season is on its way. Personally I like fall as one of the best
times, the trees are pretty and the days aren`t so hot. Although this
summer was not really that hot.
Things are starting to wind down. Matches should be done or almost
done. We have had our Club Championship in August with Karen Bird
being this year`s winner. Our Scotch Ball was August 6th
with a good
number of ladies taking part—both Niners and Eighteeners. Thunder
kept us on our toes on the last holes. All in all a great day.
Wednesday Ladies Day will go till near the end of the month. Sign up in
the locker room. Our closing dinner is Tuesday, September 23rd
(details
on next page). This has been changed from Monday to Tuesday as the
provincial election is on Monday. Plan to come as it is our election night
as well as one of our final events for this year.
As for me this will be my last newsletter as president. I have enjoyed my
two years on the job. I certainly learned a lot and the time has flown by.
When I took this on, my mom was ill and I wondered how I would
manage both but it wasn`t that difficult and I hope when you are asked
to take on a job you will consider it. This is your Club. I would like to
thank everyone for their support. I could not have done it without all of
you.

NINERS REPORT
By: Mary Hogan
Hard to believe the month of August is over and what a busy month.
We played the Scotch Ball, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to the
18ers for a fun day of golf. We went to Riverside and had a good day, a
little on the hot side but a fun filled day. Last Monday we headed to
Pennfield for lunch and then to Nicole’s cabin for an afternoon of fun.
We played a few games outside but got to hot so went in and played a
new dice game and had cake and tea served in cups and saucers…we
golfed on Wednesday, hard to believe we got the month in with no
rain…we still have some golf games in September and our fun day.
Don’t forget closing banquet is coming up also. Just a reminder we are
still looking for someone to take over the Niners as Edie, Marie and I are
stepping down….get out and enjoy the rest of the season.
SUPER SENIORS
By: Phil Reeves
Sad to say we are starting to see those first patches of red in the forests
reminding us that the passing of summer is once again sneaking up on
us. At this time we are also saddened by the recent passing of Alex
McIntosh – a member who was near and dear to the Super Seniors
organization. He will be long remembered for his sharp wit and those
gruff retorts – “where’s your money?” – “have you paid your dues?”
The Super Seniors have made arrangements to have a McIntosh apple
tree planted on the course in memory of Alex.
I have also received a proposal that we retire the Estey Cup as there is no
longer sponsorship interest in this award and that we introduce a new
trophy in memory of Alex.

With September sneaking up on us it is critical that we get matches
played so we can get to the end of the two events. At this time I would
ask that if you can’t find time to play your game please forfeit the game
to your opponent so that the draw can proceed. Remember that both
events are double elimination knockouts so everyone is guaranteed two
games. The draw sheets are posted on the bulletin board in the men’s
locker room so please keep on top of your progress.
We had a lot of inter-club activity over the past month. We participated
in a two-man scramble inter-club event in Sussex on July 21st but none
of our members made it to the prize podium.
We hosted an inter-club event with Fredericton, Sussex and Gage on
August 7th
where the Westfield players were well represented on the
prize podium – in the gross category Kevin Carson [74] was second,
Gerry Keith [76] was third and Dave Kean [76] was fourth. In the net
category Ron Brunet [64] was second, Walter Foster [64] was third,
Merrill Loughery [64] was fourth, Bob Whipple [65] was fifth, Paul Hill
[66] was sixth, Winston Goodwin [66] was seventh, Dave Hey [68] was
ninth, and Dave Greason [68] was tenth. Bob Plume won a closest to the
pin award for hole #18.
We participated in a tri-club at Riverside on August 12th
where Dave
Kean was sixth low gross winner, Brian Wilkins was ninth low net
winner and Jacques Ouellette won a closest to the pin award.
We also participated in an inter-club event at Gage on August 25th
where
Merrill Loughery was the third low net winner in Division 2B.
Fredericton will be making their third attempt to host their inter-club
event on Thursday September 4th
. The signup sheet for this event is in
the office and entries will close on September 1st at noon. We have
Westfield Golf & Country Club
Newsletter September 2014
started a new sign up sheet for this event so even if you signed up
previously for one of the earlier dates you have to contact the office in
order to be signed up for this event on September 4th
. We have been
guaranteed 16 cart seats, which will be issued on a first come, first
served basis, after that you will be put on a waiting list.
In terms of our regular draw events we had a two man alternate shot
game on July 31st won by Jim Pattman and Carl Tilley with a score of
85, Walter Foster also won closest to the pin on hole #18 and Gary
MacFarlane won closest to the 150 yard marker on hole #17. On August
21st we played a scramble where all players had to use a designated club
for a specific shot on each hole and the winning team for this event was
Walter Foster, Bill Wilson, Ron Brunet and Chuck Hickey with a score
of 68 and Don Campbell won the closest to the 150-yard marker on hole
#17. On August 28th
closest to the pin winners were Jim McHugh on
hole #2 and Jim Lyons on hole #6. Ray Wasson won closest to the 150-
yard marker on hole #10.
We will have a modified Stapleford team event on September 11th
and
our closing scramble and luncheon will be on September 25th
.
We are hoping for a continuation of the nice weather throughout
September so get out and enjoy.
