Tunnel Fit Out – Invert Pour

Concrete slab to be

poured

With the completion of the tunnel boring, we now start the next step for work in the tunnels with pouring of concrete slabs to ‘invert’ or flatten the tunnel floor. This must occur prior to the installation of track and transit systems.

Page 14: Western Works - Construction Liaison Committee Meeting - May 2017

14

Tunnel Fit Out – Concrete Pour Overview

• Concrete trucks deliver concrete every 30-60 minutes, depending on howfar down the tunnel the work is occurring

• Trucks park beside the shaft at Cedarvale (Allen Rd. and Eglinton), andunload 9 m3 of concrete into a large pipe, into one of two mini concretetrucks (4.5 m3 each) at the shaft floor.

• The mini truck in the shaft then drives down the tunnel to the next sectionof tunnel to be inverted.

• The first stage of concrete pour began in tunnel section 1 on April 4, 2017,and tunnel section 2 on April 17, 2017.

• On average, crews complete a section approximately 80 metres in lengthof the concrete slab per day in each tunnel.

15

Tunnel Invert Pour – Stage 1

• Concrete trucks deliver loose concrete to the work area• Loose concrete mix is used to fill the bottom of the tunnel• Tunnel Fit Out Crew flatten and smooth it

Page 16: Western Works - Construction Liaison Committee Meeting - May 2017

16

Tunnel Invert Pour – Stage 2

• Workers install welded mesh which functions like rebar to help reinforce the next layer of concrete

• Higher strength concrete is poured to provide the flat track slab for the rail tracks• Workers spread the concrete, and a truss screed machine vibrates it into a perfectly

level surface
