Renewable energy may be chic, but that isn't why Lubbock merits a windmill museum. The American Wind Power Center displays its own working wind turbine. It towers over dozens of older windmills scattered across the museum grounds, their wheels rhythmically creaking in the West Texas breeze. For farmers and ranchers, a museum of old wind machines evokes nostalgic feelings for a squeaking "prairie pinwheel" out by the barn.

Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum From dinosaurs to conquistadors to petroleum engineers, find it all in Texas' largest history museum. The museum's exhibits include American Western life and agriculture history artifacts, art, paleontology, geology, Native American art and artifacts, firearms, decorative arts and furniture, petroleum industry artifacts, sports artifacts, and textiles.

adventure will explore the history, culture and

beautiful landscape of the Texas Panhandle.

No less than awe-inspiring! Palo Duro Canyon has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multi-colored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon. The second largest canyon in the country lies in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. Take in the canyon's rugged beauty and enjoy its colorful history. The painter Georgia O'Keeffe, who lived in Amarillo and Canyon early in the 20th century, wrote of the Palo Duro: "It is a burning, seething cauldron, filled with dramatic light and color.”

The Botanical Garden features a tropical conservatory which showcases a flourishing indoor collection of exotic plants. Explore the diverse natural beauty of the surrounding four acres of seasonal landscape which include the diverse beauty of numerous outdoor themed plantings including Japanese, fragrance, xeric, and butterfly gardens.

Don Harrington Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is an interactive science center with hands-on science exhibits and a planetarium. Located in front of the Discovery Center is the Helium Centennial Time Columns Monument. The planetarium features the Digistar 3, fulldome video projection technology. Voyage to the furthest reaches of our galaxy to examine black holes, stars and planets; travel back in time to investigate ancient civilizations; or visit the deepest parts of our oceans and explore an active coral reef!

Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian One of Amarillo's newest attractions, the building mimics the design of an Indian Pueblo. The museum exhibits gives visitors a glimpse into the cultures of the people of the Pueblos and Plains. The museum displays fine paintings, bronzes, fine beadwork and material culture items.

The story is set in the late 1880s, as the Panhandle plains are being settled and conflicts are erupting between cattlemen and farmers over the use of public lands.

This family-friendly show is set against an authentic tapestry of history and the show's fictional characters bring to life the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the settlers of the Texas Panhandle in the 1800s.

American Quarter Horse Museum

The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Muse-um celebrates the history of the American quarter horse. The museum features photos of honorees and paintings of American quarter horses famous in the bloodlines of today’s champions. There are interac-tive exhibits about horse anatomy, horse riding and disciplines of the American quarter horse. Other displays include artifacts, riding and cowboy attire, tack, photos and ribbons and memorabilia about inductees.
