West Coast boarding schools offer hope,

counseling and education

The concept of boarding schools has been an institution in this country for generations.

On the West Coast, however, a growing need among the children of the last few generations has spawned a new type of school, the alternative boarding school.

While not as established as some on the other coast, the West Coast boarding schools are quickly growing in popularity because of their focused curriculums dedicated to helping all their students achieve the academic successes they deserve.

For children with learning disorders, as well as those who cannot effectively focus and learn in a traditional environment for reasons stemming from social and behavioral problems, these West Coast boarding schools have been a godsend.

With curriculums designed to help students focus on their studies, overcome learning disabilities, and an exceptional teacher-student ratio, the success rates of these specialized alternative schools cannot be denied for much longer, and traditional schools may just have competition for enrollments in the near future.

History behind West Coast boarding schools

A lot of these schools were originally set up to take on the problem students that public schools could no longer handle, or wanted to handle. These were the kids who had not been diagnosed with learning disabilities, but were thought of, and treated like, troublemakers, the kind that would be swept aside by education in general.

No one cared if they ever graduated, as long as they did not have to deal with them any longer.

Sad, but true, and this was not all that long ago.

Over time, the alternative California boarding schools, as well as those Oregon boarding schools who began life as a court ordered alternative to public schooling, began to take a closer look at their curriculum, and their students, to find ways to make their students want to be there, and not because someone said that they had to be there.

In light of medical science diagnosing learning disabilities like dyslexia, ADHD and autism, educators began to revamp their curriculums, hired on more teachers, and instituted counseling as well as education.

The effect on their student populations has been enormous, and a lot of boys graduated successfully when they otherwise might not have survived.

School life

Today, more than 250,000 students attend these alternative therapeutic boarding schools. They offer specialized attention to students in need, and the results have been amazing. There are smaller classes here than you might find in another boarding school, allowing for a better teacher-student ratio.

There are group counseling sessions, and one-on-one monitoring throughout.

A lot of graduates go on to college, and dedicate their lives to helping kids like them succeed as well.

A groundbreaking program begun at one of these schools has since been adopted across the country. A wilderness therapeutic curriculum, which takes special needs students into the great outdoors and teaches them teamwork, social skills and surviving in the face of adversity has proven to be successful for those with past behavioral problems like violence, running away and drug abuse.
