French Lick, IN (July 18, 2014) – Imagine lingering on the West Baden Spring Hotel’s rocking chair-lined Veranda, old fashioned in hand, while artists are perched throughout the garden creating original works of art right before your eyes. Just when you think life couldn’t get any better, live jazz fills the air with a soundtrack that seems to have been written for this very moment. You have just experienced the virtues of Chords, Canvas & Cocktails.

Jazz Under the Dome

In the late 1950s greats like Stan Kenton, Dave Brubeck, The Four Freshmen and many others headlined a multi-day music festival organized by Newport Jazz Festival impresario George Wein. We are honoring that legacy with Jazz Under the Dome; a weekend of standards, be-bop, swing and more featuring some of the best jazz talent in the region. Best of all there is no cover charge! From check-in on Friday to brunch on Sunday, enjoy various iterations and ensembles of musicians playing everything from the likes of Sing, Sing, Sing, S’Wonderful and Night in Tunisia to fusion. These cats have played with the Dorsey Brothers, Glen Miller, the Count Basie tribute orchestras, Slide Hampton and the Java Men. Visit frenchlick.com for the complete lineup of musicians.

Bourbon & Bites (Bourbon Women Sip-osium event)

This area has always had a relationship with bourbon. Even through prohibition, Springs Valley wasn’t exactly dry. Some would say the area was in fact, a magnet for prohibition outlaws with 13 illegal casinos at its peak. We are honored to be hosting a classier bunch, Louisville’s Bourbon Women, for their first ever Sip-osium. The weekend-long event offers learning, libations and relaxation! To see the weekend’s itinerary and learn more about Bourbon Women, visit bourbonwomen.org.

If you don’t participate in the Sip-osium, you will still have a chance to “dip your toe in the bourbon barrel” with a different take on our ever popular Wine & Dessert Soiree. We will be hosting “Bourbon & Bites” with "Kentucky Bourbon Country: The Essential Travel Guide" author Susan Reigler. The bourbon tasting will be paired with exquisitely prepared bites from the West Baden culinary team.

Art in the Garden

Indiana Heritage artists are drawn to the magical vistas the West Baden garden offer: the classic Springhouse pagodas, the curious bridge that seems to go nowhere and that heavenly view of the hotel. During the West Baden Paint Out, artists will be perched throughout the garden immortalizing their own versions of our historic bliss. These paintings will be for sale Saturday afternoon – allowing you to purchase the ultimate West Baden Springs Hotel souvenir. Jazz Under the Dome

West Baden Springs Hotel at French Lick Resort is excited to bring you Jazz Under the Dome, a full weekend

of music vignettes Friday – Sunday August 22-24. There will be more than 21 hours of live jazz available

throughout the weekend. Best of all, there’s no cover charge!

Jamey Aebersold

Saturday, August 23 • 9pm-Midnight • Library

The 2014, National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award-winning saxophonist has made enormous

contributions to jazz through tireless efforts as a performer, educator, and publisher.

After Hours Quartet

Friday, August 22 • 9pm-Midnight • Library

One of Evansville’s premier groups for more than 20 years, After Hours plays all the greats from Ellington,

Gershwin and Porter to the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Elton John.

Rob Dixon

Saturday, August 23 • 1pm - 4pm • Veranda

Dixon has played with legendary artists such as the Count Basie Band, The Ellington Band, Slide Hampton,

Tony Bennett, and Rufus Reid. Often referred to as the “Musical Mayor of Indianapolis” Dixon’s style is both

respectful of the written chart and free with expression.

Mike Lucas Trio

Friday, August 22 • 5pm-9pm • Atrium

Lucas and his band are influenced by the time he spent playing with jazz greats the Dorsey Brothers, Glen

Miller and Natalie Cole. The members of the Mike Lucas Bands are among the finest musicians in the country.

Sarah Stivers

Saturday, August 23 • 5pm - 9pm • Atrium

As French Lick Resort’s house musician, Stivers has standing gigs in the West Baden Atrium and the Power

Plant Lounge. She leads four different-sized bands. Labeled a jazz vocalist, a cabaret chanteuse, and a pop

singer, Sarah considers herself a “musical chameleon.” Call it what you will but with a voice that is clean, sexy

and "buttery smooth," she is definitely a guest-favorite. Stivers, and her band, plays everything from Mozart to

Maroon 5 with a bit of disco, big band, rock & roll, jazz, Broadway, Motown, country, classical, 70s,

bluegrass and show tunes in between.

Craig Wagner

Saturday, August 23 & Sunday, August 24 • 9am -11am • Sinclair's Restaurant

Craig’s own work has been featured in publications such as Guitar Player, Guitar One, Acoustic Guitar, Just

Jazz Guitar, 20th Century Guitar, Vintage Guitar, Keyboard Magazine, The Village Voice, Cadence and Spin.

As a member of the modern music trio, Java Men, Craig has played at venues as large as Lollapolooza, as

intimate as the Knitting Factory, and as sprawling as the New Orleans Jazz Festival. They’ve shared the bill

with Victor Wooten, the Charlie Hunter Trio, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and David Byrne.

West Baden Paint Out

August 22-23

Over two dozen Indiana Heritage Arts participants will be peppered throughout the grounds of the West Baden Springs Hotel. They will sell their pieces, commission-free, to resort guests.

IHA which is based in the Brown County Art Gallery, along with the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation has been involved in an ongoing project called "Art for West Baden" Pieces from the Permanent Collections of both organizations hang in the hotel's lobby and library in an effort to educate visitors to the resort about Indiana's rich art history as well as its ongoing legacy of supporting today's Hoosier Masters.

To get a sneak preview of the event, check out the West Baden Paint Out video on YouTube or click the image below to be taken to the Flickr album.
