2016 End of School Term The 2016 school year concludes on Tuesday 20 December 1.00pm

2017 Term Dates • Wednesday 1 February - Students in Years 1-6 return to school for assembly at

9.00am. • Thursday 2 February - Prep students commence school at 9am (proceed

directly to classrooms). • Term 1 Wednesday 1 February – Friday 31 March • Term 2 Tuesday 18 April - Friday 30 June • Term 3 Monday 17 July - Friday 22 September • Term 9 Monday 3 October - Friday 22 December

Clubs and Activities Students are continuing to enjoy the many lunchtime clubs and activities provided at lunch times. Clubs run for 15-30 minutes and range from dance & coding to sport training & singing, and everything in between! Some clubs have changed since Term Three, so students are reminded to check the timetable sent around at the start of the week. A copy of this timetable will be in next week’s newsletter. A huge thank-you to the teachers and ES staff who support these clubs during their lunchtimes, providing students with different opportunities to engage while at school. Attendance Our whole school attendance for Melbourne Cup Monday was 65.5% this year. This is an increase from 59% in 2015. Explanations for any absences are very important. If you replied to the Sentral or Tiqbiz Melbourne Cup notification, this has already been recorded as an explained absence. Please remember to tell the classroom teacher or write a note so any absence can be adjusted as explained. Thank-you for your ongoing support as we strive for better attendance and improved student engagement. Well done to the Year Twos and Fours for their attendance last week. Looking at the table below, you can see they were above 95%.

Rowing to Rio!!! Did you know that science links to all sports, especially in the Olympics? Jennifer Cleary and Fiona Albert visited the Year Five students at Wembley on Monday, to share their recent experiences in the Rio Olympic Games. Students were amazed at just how much science was involved! * Nutrition was vital. Special scientists used muscles and blood scientific studies to give them the best chance. Athletes drank beetroot juice to open their capillaries and increase blood flow just before their race. *Sleep patterns. Scientists studied the optimal amount of sleep so that the athletes had the most energy the next day. *Physiology and Kinesiology. Sports scientists measured the athlete’s muscle and lung capacity and designed training programs to improve results. One of these strategies was to wear a clip on their nose to help breathe through their mouth. The students found this as amusing as Jen and Fi The Year Five students were impressed to see how Science works in real life! Written by Declan and Joseph on behalf of the Year Fives.

Last week the children in Year 2 attended camp in Queenscliff. This was their first camp and all had fun. Each grade has written a snapshot about the different activities they participated in. They hope you enjoy reading them as much as they enjoyed attending camp.
