Public Art Reston TY!

With a breathtaking 16th-story view of the sunset over Reston as itsbackdrop, Public Art Reston kicked off its Annual PARty on Thursday,October 18th.  Held atop the new Helmut Jahn-designed landmark high-rise at Comstock’s Reston Station, more than 130 guests enjoyed a livelyevening of artful entertainments along with savory bites and deliciouswines. 

A friend- and fund-raiser, the PARty was also a 10th anniversarycelebration of Reston’s adoption of a Public Art Master Plan, the first ofits kind among unincorporated communities in the U.S., and providedthe opportunity to acknowledge individuals who have made a specialcontribution to public art in the community. This year Fairfax CountySupervisor Cathy Hudgins, a long-time supporter, and Joe Ritchey,Public Art Reston's Founder, were honored.

Reston’s own Marco Rando, PAR Board Director, artist and teacher, wascommissioned to create a site-specific installation for the event, 30, 60,90, which was made completely of colored masking tape on glass andvisually played with the raw space of the Jahn building.  And for the firsttime, a limited-edition photograph by Reston-based artist CharlotteGeary was offered for sale, with a small number still available forpurchase.

“The 2018 Annual PARty!, which raised $23,000, offered guests a funopportunity to celebrate the public art of Reston, the ongoing initiativesof PAR as well as its sources of inspiration,” enthused Chelsea Rao, chairof Public Art Reston’s reception committee.

Since 2008, 12 permanent public artworks and 12 temporary public artinstallations have been commissioned in Reston, which currently boasts agrowing inventory of almost 50 public art works.

All three candidates were appointed for three-year terms. Bouie andSechrest-Ehrhardt were incumbents. Stillson was elected to his first termon the board. The appointments were made based upon the officialresults of the 2018 RCC Preference Poll. Vote tallies for the fivecandidates were as follows:

The three-year terms for Bouie, Sechrest-Ehrhardt and Stillson will beginon November 5, 2018. Leaving the board is Gerald Zavala, who servedRCC for six years, including four as Treasurer.

William G. Bouie has served on the RCC Board since 2003, and servedas the Board Chair from 2006 until 2008. He is also the current chair ofthe Fairfax County Park Authority Board, and vice chair of the Board ofDirectors for Public Art Reston. He has served in formal and informalroles in many other community organizations, including the Wolf TrapAssociates Board of Directors, Reston Hospital Board of Trustees, RestonLittle League, Reston Youth Baseball, Reston’s YMCA Board ofManagement, Friends of Reston and the United States OlympicCommittee’s Project Gold, among others.

Lisa Sechrest­Ehrhardt has served on the RCC Board since 2012. Sheis a professional social worker and diversity trainer. In addition to herexperience as a former RCC employee, Lisa and her family haveparticipated in numerous RCC programs as patrons. Her experiences asan educator and communicator have focused on celebrating diversity andengaging community members of all backgrounds.

Richard Stillson is a 46-year Reston resident and longtimeInternational Monetary Fund staffer. He was the first president of theadvocacy group Reston 2020 and was former chair of RestonAssociation’s Lakes Committee. He has been active at RCC as aninstructor of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) courses.

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) is pleased to announce anexhibition by Rahshia Sawyer at Greater Reston Arts Center at Signature.The exhibition by Virginia-based photographer Rahshia Sawyer will runnow through January 8, 2019 and features a new body of work, What IHaven’t Told You, which illustrates the tension between emotionsexpressed and emotions repressed.

Sawyer received her MFA from George Mason University. Her work hasbeen exhibited both nationally and internationally and she was includedin the 2012 Inaugural Dublin Biennial. She was the 2012 recipient of theContemporary Talents Award from France’s François SchneiderFoundation and received a 2016 Honorable Mention from theInternational Photography Awards and Prix de la Photographie (Px3).Her work is in the permanent collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art,François Schneider Foundation, and Radford University Museum.

Opening Reception: October 25, 6–8pm
