“If anyone comes to me without hating . . . father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into con-fronting life-changing challenges. Faced with con-flicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading pre-sents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Phile-mon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional for-giveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. INVITADO

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

INVITED

The Good News is that we have all been in-vited—invited to the Kingdom, invited to be dis-ciples. It’s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these pro-found decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God’s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. Copyright © J. S. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LOUISIANA FLOODS

EMERGENCY COLLECTION

You may have heard the news: as many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters. Thou-sands of families have been left feeling isolated and fearful with their losses. Bishop John Noonan is calling you to join on a special second collection to assist with the humani-tarian efforts of Catholic Charities. Our collection will be on September 10 & 11, 2016 at all masses. We can bring comfort as the body of Christ. Help in any way you can.

-Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

On Sept. 9, the feast of St. Peter Claver, the U.S. Catholic bishops are urging dioceses, parishes, and other faith communities to participate in a Day of Prayer for Peace in Our Communities.

Pray the Rosary for Peace at all times

Reflect with others on how faith communities around the U.S. are working for racial justice, and how the Holy Spirit may be calling you to act together.

"Some of you said: this system can no longer be en-dured. We must change it; we must put human dignity again at the center and on that pillar build the alternative social structures we need. It must be done with courage, but also with intelligence, with tenacity but without fanati-cism, with passion but without violence. And among us all, addressing the conflicts without being trapped in them, always seeking to resolve the tensions to reach a higher plane of unity, peace and justice." -Pope Francis

The USCCB webpage updates regularly, provides

the latest information & resources to assist your work. As always, USCCB thanks your work to proclaim the Church's social mission and inspire solidarity with our neighbors.
