to
ParkesParkes is much loved for the famous Parkes Elvis Festival and CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, but if you take some time to explore the district there is so much more to discover.
With a population of around 12,200, Parkes is supported by a number of industries such as mineral resources, agriculture and retail. The Peak Hill Open Cut Experience is a great way for visitors to learn about mining techniques in the region, both past and present. Self guided tours can be undertaken daily between 9am and 4pm, except for Christmas Day and Good Friday, with free entry.
In Parkes you have the option of visiting any of the quality cafés and boutiques in town, learning a little more about The King or exploring a bygone era at the Henry Parkes Museum.
The CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, star of the movie ‘The Dish,’ is one of Australia’s most prominent landmarks and a must-see attraction while visiting Parkes. The Parkes Radio Telescope Visitor Discovery Centre is open daily.
Goobang National Park is located north-east of Parkes and forms the largest area of remnant vegetation in central New South Wales. Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreational activities such as bushwalking, birdwatching and camping.
For more information on Parkes, please visit www.visitparkes.com.au. Alternatively, drop into the Parkes Visitor Information Centre located on Newell Highway (North).
Things toSee & Do Parkes boasts an interesting array of things to see and do for visitors to the region.
CSIRO PARKES RADIO TELESCOPELocated 20kms north of Parkes, The CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope is a short 5km detour off the Newell Highway. You can walk almost right up to it and marvel at the 64 metre steel paraboloid, elegantly balanced atop a three storey concrete tower. Built virtually in its shadow, the Visitor Discovery Centre is where visitors are invited to explore the world of astronomy and discover what role The Dish plays in “listening to the stars”. The centre is open daily between 8.30am and 4.15pm and boasts an award winning cafe.
THE HENRY PARKES CENTRE The Henry Parkes Centre is a one-stop-shop for visitors seeking historical, cultural and recreational information. The complex houses the Parkes Visitor Information Centre, The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit, the Parkes Motor Museum and the Henry Parkes Museum. Make sure you check out the Antique Machinery Collection, which features a range of heritage tractors, harvesters
and equipment used in days gone by on many of the regional farms. Parkes is the Elvis Capital of Australia and home to The Kings Castle, an Elvis Museum. The Kings Castle is the largest collection of items formerly owned by Elvis Presley in the southern hemisphere. See the latest exhibition ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes - A day in the life of Elvis Presley’, which conveys the triumphant and turbulent times of this musical icon.
MEMORIAL HILLMemorial Hill provides the best vantage point for magnificent views over Parkes and the surrounding farmlands. Memorial Hill is the most visible landmark in town, with its 35 metre high Shrine of Remembrance standing high over Parkes. The hill offers the opportunity for a leisurely bushwalk around the monument surrounds, or a picnic in Rotary Park on the northern side of the hill.
GOOBANG NATIONAL PARKLocated just 30kms from Parkes, Goobang National Park features a diverse range of f lora with more than 300 species identified in the park. The park offers visitors the opportunity to relax and unwind with a bushwalk in picturesque and tranquil surrounds.
SURROUNDING TOWNSHIPSVisit Bogan Gate, which boasts an outstanding Craft Shop in the old Railway Station, or Trundle to witness the widest main street in NSW and the longest wooden verandah in Australia. Tullamore has quickly become renowned for its incredibly popular Irish Festival.
