TRANSCRIPT

Welcome to Mr. Roberts Classroom Expectations and Procedures 8 th Grade Language Arts This is exactly how you feel, right? Who is this guy? Husband and father Graduate of Southern Miss Go Eagles! Church Volunteer Baseball and College Football Fan USM, LSU, and Braves In this room, I can expect To always be treated fairly To be respected and appreciated To be expected to work hard everyday To become prepared for high school and life beyond it To not complain Everything I do this year is in your best interests, not mine! Grading Scale 10 Point Scale A: 89.5 100 B: 79.5 89.4 C: 69.5 79.4 D: 59.5 69.4 F: Below 59.5 Grade Breakdown: 1 st and 3 rd Term: Summative = 60% Formative = 40% 2 nd and 4 th Term: Summative = 40% Formative = 40% Exam = 20% Expectation #1 I will always respect others the way I want to be respected Expectation #2 I will always follow directions the first time they are given. Expectation #3 I will always raise my hand and wait for permission to speak or leave my seat. Expectation #4 I will always come to class with ALL my supplies, books, and assignments. Expectation #5 I will keep my desk and the area around it clean and organized Expectation #6 I will always leave ALL food, drinks, and gum at home. Meeting these expectations will result in A quiet and orderly environment Less stress for everyone Always knowing what is going on from one day to the next Being able to get every bit of knowledge you can from me (your education!) Consequences Step 1 Name on Board and 1 Minute Your choice in actions or words has not met expectations, and should be correct to avoid further consequences. The Minute Every time you do something that does not meet my expectations, you earn a minute of time after class. You can earn up to 3 minutes. You only have 5 between each class I dont write passes if you get minutes! I do this because when you do not meet my expectations that takes away from my teaching time, so I will return the favor by taking away your social time between classes. If you dont serve your minutes, you earn a morning detention. Consequences Step 2 Second minute on the board Speak with me after class Consequences Step 3 Third minute on the board Parent contacted Consequences Step 4 Morning Detention 7:15-8:00 in my room Formal Letter of Apology Makeup Work Precept Writing Prompt Consequences Step 5 Office Referral Certain behaviors will immediately be referred to office: Fighting Profanity Bullying Thats Not Fair!!! It is not wise to try arguing if you get a minute. If you do, I will continue adding minutes until you earn enough steps to have an office referral If you feel you have been unfairly punished, let me know in a calm, quiet discussion after class. Consequences Repeated Problems In the event of repeated poor decisions on your part a parent, student, teacher conference will be scheduled if: More than three after class conversations in a week (step 2) More than two phone calls in a week (step 3) More than two detentions in a month (step 4) How do you get minutes? Failing to follow one of the stated expectations. Trying to tell me when another student has done something that deserves a minute Thats my job, not yours I got this! Not completing or turning in an assignment when it is due will skip you to step 2 automatically We need to talk about why you arent doing everything you can to be successful Supplies You will need the following supplies to be successful in my class: Supplies: Why Do I Need a Book? 40 Book Challenge! You are expected to have a book of your choice with you in my class at all times. The purpose for this book is to read when you are finished with assignments. I require this because the only way to get better at reading is to keep reading. If you do not have a book with you, you may borrow one from my bookshelf, but you will earn a minute for not having your required supplies with you. Cell Phone Policy: During the year, there will be occasions where it is acceptable to use your cell phone in class. I will very clearly let you know when those times come, and exactly what you may or may not do with your phone in class. If you are caught using your phone in any way other than what I have allowed, it will be taken up and sent to the office, and you will earn 1 min. If it is not an acceptable time for your phone to be out and I SEE it, it will be taken up and sent to the office, and you will earn 1 min. Social Network Policy Yes, I am on Facebook and Twitter No, I will not be your friend or follow you this year If Im really important enough to be in your online social life, you can wait four years until you graduate high school. Advice you dont want, but Im giving you anyway: Think before you click post. More than 75% of students today will miss out on a work opportunity in their future because of something they posted to a social media site. Once you post something, its on the Internet forever! Even if you click delete, it still exists somewhere! E-Readers You may bring an e-reader to use in English ONLY once you and your parent sign an Electronic Device Letter (see me at the end of class for a copy) You may not use this device in any other class (school policy). B/c my class is the only one you can use it in, you may leave it locked up in my classroom and come get it at the end of the day. If it is not left in my room, I am not responsible for you getting it taken up in another teachers classroom. Also, the school is not responsible if it is lost or damaged.
