About Kiev Kiev is one of the biggest cities in Europe.

It is a capital of Ukraine, its administrative, economic, cultural and educational center. The population is over 3 million people.

Kiev is situated in the north central part of the country on the Dnepr River. Its area is 827 sq km.

The climate is continental. Winters are usually long and cold. Summers are short and hot. The mayor of Kiev is Leonid Chernovetskiy.

Sights Kiev is one of the oldest towns in

Europe. You can see Cathedral of St. Sophia with mosaics and frescoes, Kievo-Percherskaya Lavra with several monasteries and cathedrals, Golden Gate of Kiev and many other attractions. Kiev is often referred to as "the mother of all cities" by Russians and Ukrainians.

Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra On the high hills of the right bank of the

Dnepr River Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra is situated. According to the legend, Apostle Andrew said to his disciples: "On these hills great city and many churches will be".

Thanks to Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra, Kiev is known as the "Russian Jerusalem".

St. Sofia Cathedral

St. Sofia Cathedral was founded in 1037. The name of the cathedral comes from Greek word "sofia", which means "wisdom". The first Russian library, founded by Yaroslav Mudry was in this Cathedral.

The cathedral is famous for its mosaics and frescos by Byzantine masters. The central part of the cathedral is decorated with large mosaic. The mosaic is 6 meters high and consists of stone and glass plates of different colors. Notes and images on the walls known as Sophia graffiti, are of great historical value.

Golden Gate Golden Gate was constructed in 1017-

1024 and were as a main entrance to Kiev. The name of the Gate in Kiev reminds of famous entrance to Constantinople: Kiev prince Yaroslav Mudry wanted to underline that his country was as powerful as Byzantine Empire.

Kievers called Golden Gate "the sky gate", as every morning the sun passed through it and rose. The citizens of Kiev believed that sun and Golden Gate saved the city from darkness and death.

Kreschatik

Kreschatik is the most famous and one of the busiest streets in Kiev with a plenty of chestnut trees.

The citizens of the city like this street, and the guests of Kiev try to visit it and feel its charming atmosphere first of all.

Andreevsky Spusk It is one of the oldest streets in Kiev. In

ancient days it was the shortest way from the Upper Town to the Podol, or the Lower Town, where craftspeople lived. Now this street is a traditional place for arranging concerts, art festivals and city holidays. On Andreevsky Spusk there are many interesting picture galleries and souvenir stores.

One of the major attractions of Andreevsky Spusk is Andreevskaya, or Saint Andrew, Church.

 Independence Square The Independence Square, or Maidan

Nezalezhnosti, is the central square in Kiev, the main and the most beautiful one. Parades, concerts, festivals and other city arrangements and holidays take place on this square. It contains six fountains and Independence Column.

One of the best decorations of the central square is the Independency Column topped with a statue of Archangel Mikhail, who is the saint patron of Kiev. Another attraction of the square is 5,000-sprays fountain called Friendship of Nations designed by architect Komarovsky.

Theatres The repertoire of Kiev theatres is for all tastes. The

opera and ballet lovers can go to the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after T.G. Shevchenko, which is the oldest musical theatre in Ukraine. Those who prefer comedies can go to the Bravo Drama Theatre. Those bored with traditions and classics can go to the Cherny Kvadrat Theatre.

Parks and Gardens Kiev has many parks and gardens

where you can rest with friends, family, or just alone. In the parks you can see beautiful Ukrainian nature, enjoy the fresh air and have a good time. Those who like exotic plants are welcome to visit the Central Botanical Garden. Little children get positive emotions visiting Kiev Zoo with funny animals. If you want to have fun, you will never find a better place than the Hydropark. On Trukhanov Ostrov there are the best and the cleanest city beaches.
