Following on from the highly successful Cockermouth Georgian Festival in April, Cockermouth again comes alive - there is truly something for everyone, including, this year, two wonderful markets to be held in our historic Market Place. From gaining our market charter in 1221, through the medieval hiring fairs, right up to the present day, Cockermouth has always been a wonderful place to meet & enjoy life, from the wealth of pubs serving the best beer in Cumbria (including Jennings, brewed in town), the variety of award-winning restaurants catering for all tastes, the range of special, individual shops offering the personal touch, to the peace & tranquility of the many riverside walks. The Town Trail & Cockermouth In Georgian Times booklet (available from the TIC) provide a great way to explore all the nooks & crannies, & to learn about some of our other famous sons - John Dalton, Fletcher Christian, Fearon Fallows as well as William (& Dorothy) Wordsworth - all featured in the Georgian Festival (due to return in 2008!). Returning to the Festival, I would like to thank Town Clerk David Bertram, Nigel Sidaway (Solway Arts), Bob Pritchard (Kirkgate Centre), the Tourist Information Centre staff, Chris George (programme), Alan Tyson (publicity) and everyone who is organising an event or providing demonstrations - it is really very much appreciated. I am sure that whether you come from near or far, you will find something to enjoy in our Festival Programme and in Cockermouth itself. You are most welcome!
