Open Court Reading•Open Court reading series involves the systematic teaching of the relationship of individual sounds to our spoken language, sound/spellings, the blending of sounds into words, and applying those skills into daily reading and writing.

Daily Reading ScheduleWhole Group Instruction

90 minutes of Open Court curriculum

Workshop 40 minutes, students are working in small groups and given a “must do” activity to complete, and may choose a “can do” if they finish early.

enVision Math Curriculum

• This new math curriculum adopted by SMSD last year includes ▫ interactive stories▫ daily reviews▫ a problem of the day▫ differentiated center activities▫ Practice, enrichment, and assessment of skills.

Science & Social Studies•These subject areas are explored by

traveling through the regions of the United States.

•As we visit each of the regions, we explore the land of the region, climate and weather, land and landforms, animals, plants, communities, people that have made an impact on our country today, and any other important aspect of that particular region.

“The Great Gumball Challenge”

• Students should read at least 10 minutes per evening, ( a total of 50 minutes per week). For every 10 minutes read, students will color in 1 gumball on their gumball chart in class. When their chart is filled, students will receive a gumball.

• Students may log time on weekends if they choose.• The practice of Dolch sight words may also be logged

as minutes read towards Gumball Reading.

Student Portfolios•Students will keep a portfolio throughout

the school year to keep some of their completed work. Students will be able to choose work to put into their portfolio.

•Students should bring a 2” to 3” 3-Ring View Binder, with 25+ page protectors.

Lunch•10:50-11:15•If you come up to eat with your child, they

may choose a friend from the first grade to eat with them at the designated tables in the hallway. You may also use the picnic tables that are outside on the northwest part of the lawn.

Daily Recess•1st Recess-11:20-11:40•2nd Recess-2:40-2:55 • There will be no recess outside when…

▫ the temperature is 15 degrees or below

▫ the wind chill index is 0 degrees or more

▫ there is falling moisture (more than a sprinkle or a mist).

Kleenex and Disinfecting Wipes• I am requesting that they be brought in

quarterly, depending on your last name. Please bring 2 boxes of Kleenex and 1 container of disinfecting wipes on your assigned date The schedule is as follows…

Donations Are Welcome!•Sandwich-sized double zipper baggies•Hand Sanitizer•Hand Soap•Hand Lotion-Basic, non-scented (for dry

winter months)

Afternoon Snack/Water Bottles•NO NUTS! We have severe allergies to

nuts in the first grade. This includes all types, including peanut butter.

•Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle each day. They will be filled at the beginning and half way through the school day. Water bottles should be a sports type bottle and not a twist off top.

Other Important Information•Please send a note with your child if their

dismissal procedure changes. •Birthday treats may be brought on

birthdays. If your child’s birthday occurs during the summer months, then treats may be brought for their half birthday.

•Newsletters will be posted to my Web Backpack each Friday as well as sent via Email.
