Welcome back to Middle School

• Welcome back and welcome to Year 10.

• Our team does not change – Year Manager, Guidance, Form Tutors

• Our expectations also remain the same:

The Step up to Key Stage 4

• Excellent results are possible but have to be earned

• Every second counts at Key Stage 4

• 2 years to complete up to 11 GCSEs

Expectations:

• Know target grades and what working towards

• Study beyond the classroom - before/after school and at home

• Desire to improve

• No lead in time …. It starts NOW!

National changes

All GCSE courses are linear.

Reformed GCSE in English Language,

Literature and Mathematics from

September 2015.

New language of assessment for

reformed GCSEs. Currently an eight point

A* - G grading system.

Students sit all examinations at the end of year

11. No early entry. Resits only for English and

Mathematics in November 2017

New specifications for English and Mathematics.

No controlled assessment in English.

New specifications will be assessed using a new

nine point scale. Nine will be the top grade and

one the lowest.

Consultation on grade boundaries – harder to

achieve what is currently a grade C and A*

• There is a greater emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, with more marks in the GCSE exams being allocated to these higher-order skills.

Working Together

• Students will need to take and learn effective notes on texts across the year.

• School will provide all texts - poetry anthology and Dr Jekyll can be annotated.

• Parents will be given the opportunity to buy Shakespeare play Inspector Calls to enable son/daughter to annotate own copy.

• Notes must be learned/quotes committed to memory (closed book).

• All homework completed – show my homework (1 hr per week approx)

• Be organised to learn each lesson.

How much homework will a child be set?

• A minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 60 minutes per week

for each option subject, the core subjects (English, Maths and

each of the Science subjects), Citizenship and RE.

• Extra time for controlled assessment or preparation for examinations will be required at times throughout year 10 and 11.

• Students can do additional work at home to consolidate their

learning.

• Please contact Heads of Department if you have any questions about homework.

A simple online homework calendar showing homework information, deadlines and

attachments to support students when completing their homework.

From September 7th, all homework will be displayed online, using Show My Homework.

• When you log in, your child’s homework appears in the calendar as a block, stretching from

the issue date to the due date.

• You can select a piece of homework for more details.

• In this view we can see a task’s title and description, how long the homework is expected

to take, and how it should be submitted.

• Helpful resources – files & websites – are displayed below the homework.

• When your child has logged in, they have a personalised to-do list.

• Homework is in order of deadlines, the nearest being at the top.

• On the right, they can see any Announcements or Events that apply to them.
