THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING

Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven‑sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). EL COMIENZO DE TODO

Todo el mundo reconoce la verdad de los buenos pro-verbios, y por eso perduran de generación en generación. Los rusos tienen uno sorprendentemente audaz que le pega al Evangelio de este domingo: “El pan es el comienzo de todo”. De acuerdo a la primera lectura, puede ser que Elías sintiera que era demasiado tarde para ser pan –demasiado tarde para la vida misma. Este gran profeta estaba ya al final de sus fuerzas y de su aguante. Entonces no uno, sino dos ángeles lo visitan. Uno le ofrece comida y bebida. El otro le da unas sorprendentes instrucciones. Para Elías esta comida de los ángeles es pan para su camino. Fortalecido por este regalo celestial de comida, él sigue su camino a la montaña de Dios. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús se ofrece a sí mismo, no sólo como pan para el camino, sino como pan para la vida misma. Él da su carne para dar vida al mundo. “Yo soy el pan de vida” (Juan 6:48). The Office of the Diaconate is seeking an Administrative Assistant. This full time (35 hours per week) position supports the Director of The Diaconate. This ministry of administration includes: Financial, business, office and hospitality responsibilities. The administrative assistant also serves to coordinate and collaborate with the Faith Formation department in preparing the Annual Faith Formation Conference and supporting all Diaconate programs as needed. The ideal candidate is well organized, has excellent communication skills, works well with others and is hospitable. ONCE-A-YEAR - During the month of August, the Diocese asks that each Parish host a missionary speaker who takes a second collection. The missionary assigned to our Parish is only able to come the weekend of August 29-30th. That weekend is a 5TH Sunday and our "Normal" second collection would be for the Tuition Assistance to the school. Therefore, in order to accommodate the missionary, we will move our Tuition Assistance Collection to this weekend. UNA VEZ AL ANO - durante el mes de agosto, la diócesis pide que cada parroquia visite un misionero que pida una segunda colecta. El misionero asignado a nuestra parroquia llegara el fin de semana de agosto 29 y 30. Ese fin de semana es el quinto domingo y nuestra segunda colecta “normal” seria para la ayuda de becas para la escuela. Por lo tanto, para acomodar al misionero, trasladaremos nuestra colecta para becas de la escuela en agosto 8 y 9.

MARRIAGE: Preparation should begin at least 6 months in advance. Please call the Parish Office during office hours for an appointment with the priest.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: First Wednesday of each month at 12:15 pm, or by appointment.

HOSPITALIZED/HOMEBOUND: Please notify the Parish Office if you would like Holy Communion.

PANHANDLING UPDATE - It’s been a while since we’ve checked in about one of our chronic problems-panhandling around the Church after Masses. Things have improved but our policy of not permitting panhandling or loitering on or near the church steps is still the rule. Please do not give money to people standing outside the Church. As hard as that might be for good, generous Christians, remember how many opportunities there are to be charitable around here – St. Vincent de Paul, Dorothy’s Place, the Parish Food Pantry, Wednesday morning faith-sharing, our monthly neighborhood breakfast, and lunch at First United Methodist Church among others. Jesus reminds us that “the poor will always be with you” (Mark 14:7), and part of our Christian journey of discipleship is working for just change to alleviate the suffering of our neighbors. If you can think of ways to make improvements, please let the office know. Our door is always open. We have a common interest in making our Church a safe, welcoming, and holy place to worship our Risen Lord, here in the heart of Salinas.
