SPIRITUAL CALENDAR: 4th Sunday of Great Lent (St. John of the Ladder). 8:30 A.M. Matins (Utrenia); Tone 8;

Mat. Gos. 8; 9:30 A.M. Divine Liturgy (Sf. Liturghie). Epistle: Hebrews 6:13-20; Ephesians 5:8-19 (Ven. John). Gospel: Mark 9:17-32 (Healing of the epileptic son); Matthew 4:25; 5:1-12 (Ven. John) (Sermon on the Mount-Beatitudes).

zeiesc.” Cartea ne îndrumă pe cele 33 trepte urcătoare spre

perfecţiune.

Continuând trăirea duhovnicească a Postului Mare,

specifice acestui sezon. Prima este Canonul Sfântului

Andrei Cretanul (Miercuri seara). (Vezi programul!).

Atunci, Fecioara

Maria a salvat cetatea.

celui rău, cerem ajutorul Preacuratei Fecioare Maria, Maica

noastră din Ceruri. Fie ca Domnul Dumnezeul nostru să ne

ajute să trecem acest post cu bucurie!

The Services of the 5th Week of Lent

The 4th Sunday of Great Lent is dedicated to St.

John of the “Ladder”, a saintly monk who wrote an in-

spiring classic book, intitled “The Ladder of Divine As-

cent.” This book guides the reader on the 33 steps to per-

fection.

Then, as we continue the experience of the Fast,

two special services are offered during this fifth week of

Lent. The first one is known as: The Canon of St. An-

drew of Crete (on Wednesday evening).

The Canon is in fact a dialogue with our own soul

and it enables us to reflect about repentance. In it, the hu-

man soul is likened to the man fallen among the thieves,

who finds mercy with God’s help (the Good Samaritan).

In our effort to return to God, by repentance, we learn

how to become poor in spirit; how to desire to change;

how to think in a spiritual and biblical way; how to weep

for our sins and how to follow the good, not the bad ex-

amples of the Bible. Ultimately, the service guides us to

Christ and His compassion. For inspiration, the life of St.

Mary of Egypt is being read. The second service of this week is “The Akathist

Hymn” on Friday evening (Note: In our church, due to

Fish Fry, it is on Friday morning!). The Akathis Hymn of

Friday is a service first prayed in the 7th century, when

the pagans were assailing the city of Constantinople. At

that time, the Mother of God saved the city. The service

contains a series of hymns to the Virgin, that end with

“Rejoice, o unwedded Bride!” Because we also are under

permanent siege of the devil, we pray this hymn and ask

for the rescue of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, our Mother

in Heaven. May the Lord help us to complete the fast

Excerpts from the Canon

of St. Andrew

“Where shall I begin to la-

ment the deeds of my

wretched life? How shall I

begin, O Christ, to relieve my

present tears? But as Thou

are deeply compassionate,

grant me forgiveness of sins.

….

Look upon me, O God my

Savior, with Your merciful

eye, and accept my fervent

confession. I have sinned above all men, I alone

have sinned against You; but as God take pity on

Your creature, O Savior.

….

The ladder seen of old by the great Patriarch Jacob is

an example, O my soul, both of ascent through ac-

tion

and of ascent through spiritual understanding. If,

therefore, it is your desire to live by your works,

with

understanding and contemplation, grant me to be

made new.

Venerable Mother Mary, pray to God for us.

To St Mary of Egypt: With incomparable love, O

Most-blessed Saint, you did yearn to venerate the

Tree of Life, and you were counted worthy of your

desire.

Make me also worthy to obtain that glory from on

high.”

Holy Friday Vigil Readings

Again this year we will

hold vigil at the tomb of

Christ on Friday, April

6th, beginning after Holy

Friday services. The

readings will begin at

10:00 PM on April 6th

through 8:00 AM on

April 7th. We will need at

least 2 readers, to be

responsible and wait for

the next readers to arrive.

The readings will be in English and Romanian.

Anyone can participate but we need 2 key people

for each shift, the number of shifts will depend on

the number of volunteers. If any of the AROY

would like to volunteer, we will need 2 adults to be

present.

If you have not participated in the past, please join

us this year. Judy Khoury will be in charge of

scheduling the readers. Any volunteers are asked to

call Ms. Judy Khoury at 216-671-2869 or email her

at [email protected].

The Way to get Ready for Pascha

Those who live in the church know that we do not keep our fasts and

feasts as traditions. We do what we do, because we want to live in Christ.

We imitate Him in the way that we think, we interpret reality and we pray.

So for anyone who seeks to renew his/her spiritual life, there is no other

preparation that takes you to Christ, but repentance (that is Confession

before the Priest) and Holy Communion or partaking of the Sacrament of

Eucharist (the very Body and Blood of Christ), without Whom “we cannot

accomplish anything!” There are three more weeks and Pascha is here.

Are you ready to rejoice in Christ’s Resurrection or do you perhaps think

you can do it without changing. Remember, He makes all things new! Let

us offer Him our life and He will make it new, forever!

Donate a Runner!

The frigid winter and

the salt used in the

parking lot have

visibly damaged our

runners. We need new

runers in church and

at the entrance in the

Sunday School.

Certainly, all of us contributed to this.

Would you donate one?

Thank you for your help!

Invite and Bring a Friend

If you want to work for the Gospel of Christ, become an

factor of influence in your family or with your friends.

Speak to them with warmth about our church family and

invite them to church. There is joy in heaven for the return

of a sinner! This may redeem many of your own sins too!

Just try, but before you do it, pray! You may be blessed to

discover how joyful it is to bring joy to others.

Parties During Great Lent

The Great Lent is the time when we mourn for our sins.

The entire church community lives according to a new

pace: avoiding some foods, noise, parties, theatres, etc.

The Facebook reveals a different world. It is a grave sin

when people organize parties during the Holy Fast. It truly

offends and hurts the sensibility of those who believe. We

pray for forgiveness and ask that we be forgiven for

reminding you what is proper, or not!

Every Friday Evening

We are very grateful to ALL our volunteers, young and

younger, who every week of Lent come on Thursday or

Friday to help our Fish Fry. Though we do not consume

fish during lent, we do it as fund raiser to cover for the

needs of the church. Our Roman-Catholic friends enjoy it

and fill our parking lot to the brim. Come and see!
