Themes are rarely stated outright.

Readers have to infer the theme after considerable thought.

DIFFERENT THAN SUBJECT Subject: Growing Up Theme: For most young people, growing up is a process that

involves the pain of achieving self knowledge.

Theme must be stated in at least one sentence; most themes are complex enough to require several sentences, or even an essay.

Some Questions You Had Can we watch another [film] like that? How many days did [Alice] go without food? Did [Alice] ever get with the newspaper guy? Did Alice and Lucy ever get to vote? Did this ALL really happen? Was it the guy who took his kids away from his wife that posted Alice Paul’s note into

the post? Did they really get mistreated like in the movie when they were in prison? Why didn’t she want to eat? Did Alice really get force fed? Why? What other causes did Alice Paul fight for? Why did President Wilson not want women to have the right to vote? Why did men not want to allow women their own rights? Why did women not have freedom from the beginning? Did Emily Leighton leave her husband? I didn’t realize women went through that much to get the right to vote.

Close Reading Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to

make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from text. What things are said outright in Iron Jawed Angels? What things can we infer and conclude that the “author” is saying

about the subjects (from yesterday)? What “specific textual evidence” do we see that supports our

inferences and conclusions?
