NEW SOUTH WALES ABORIGINAL LAND COUNCIL ELECTION OF 9 COUNCILLORS

In accordance with the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, and Regulation thereunder, an election is to be held for 9 councillors of the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council with one member to be elected to represent each of the following Regional Aboriginal Land Council areas:-

WHO CAN VOTEA person is entitled to vote at the election for a Councillor to represent a Region if the person is a voting member of a Local Aboriginal Land Council within the Region. SOUTHERN CROSS University have put plans to build a campus as part of the Cobaki Lakes development on hold while pushing forward with plans for a new building at the Gold Coast Airport.

Construction will start later this year on the third building at the Coolangatta campus, but the Universitys Vice Chancellor Peter Lee said they have not abandoned the plan to build at Cobaki.

The University has decided to proceed with the fully funded Building C at the existing campus adjacent to Gold Coast Airport, with construction to start later this year, said Professor Lee.

The timeline for getting the green light to construct Building C as a foundation building at Cobaki was always extremely ambitious.

We determined that proceeding with Building C at the existing campus will give us greater certainty for accommodating our immediate growth.

"We are extremely grateful for all of the support we have received, in particular from Tweed Shire Council, NSW Planning and Environment and the federal Departments of Education, and Infrastructure and Regional Development.

Professor Lee said the University has funding through the federal governments Structural Adjustment Fund for the third building, which will include a lecture theatre and learning spaces.

He said the University was continuing to explore options including the potential Cobaki site, in response to demand and as part of its longer term vision for the southern Gold Coast and Tweed region.

Cobaki uni campus on hold

A COMMUNITY sleepout will be held next week to raise awareness of the plight of local homeless people and raise funds for the Tweeds only homelessness support service.

The Freds Place Community Sleepout will feature a live and silent auction, special guest speakers including a rst-hand experience of homelessness, and tours of Freds Place over the evening of Thursday 30 July.

Freds Place was established in Tweed Heads by the St Vincent DePaul Society in 2013 and is an intervention and prevention support service that assists people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the Tweed region.

Service Manager Jason McDonald said the event is an important fundraiser for the service which receives no ongoing government funding.

Many people have experienced how dif cult it has been just to get out of bed in the morning recently due to the cold weather so you can just imagine how hard it is for those who are sleeping rough, said Mr McDonald.

We have 50 to 70 people accessing our service every day while we also help people who are right on the edge, at risk of homelessness, living below the poverty line and struggling to cope.

In our two years of operation we have housed 435 people and relocated more than 200 with family and friends and while this is a real and positive difference the numbers are huge and it remains a massive challenge every day.

Participants in the sleepout have been called on to raise at least $250 each towards a goal of $10,000 for the event.

One of those participating will be Kingscliff resident and former Tweed Shire Councillor Dot Holdom who said her rst exposure to the problem came while working as a nurse at an inner city hospital.

I know the stereotype of homeless people as male, alcohol dependent, no-hopers still exists but Im also aware that homelessness itself does not care about who you are or what you were, or why

you are in the position of being homeless, homelessness is non-discriminatory, said Ms Holdom.

There will always be someone, somewhere that has just become homeless and the least we can do as a country is provide a safe place to fall for that someone until they get back on their feet again.

And for those who reject society outright for whatever reason the least we can do is provide centres for those people to shower, eat, sleep, provide them with some fresh clothing, connect with them in whatever way possible and be there for them tomorrow.

A society is and should be judged on how we treat each other and while homelessness does not care we can, do and should.

Another participant and Ambassador for the event will be State Member for Tweed Geoff Provest who has encouraged the whole community to get behind the event.

Tweed Heads has one of the highest homeless rates per capita of any city or town in New South Wales, yet there is no other homelessness support service like Freds Place in the Tweed region, said Mr Provest.

Freds Place has had an enormously positive effect on the Tweed Heads community and the people it assists, so I am extremely proud to be a part of this event.

Homelessness has always been an issue that is close to my heart and through my involvement, I hope to help raise much-needed funds for Freds Place as well as raise awareness of the devastating cycle of homelessness.

Ms Holdom has arranged for a container to be placed at the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club where donations of much needed toiletries can be made.
