The Plan…for this unit…

• Students will expand and enrich vocabulary to strengthen reading and writing skills.

• We will build our understanding of sentence structure in order to discuss our writing. Diagramming as our tool

• We will examine a professional writer and explore the skills and techniques used by John Steinbeck, possibly apply some techniques to our writing. The Pearl

• Writing Assignment #1• Each student will demonstrate knowledge of basic parts of a

plot and narrative by application in writing an original parable.

• Writing Assignment #2• Students will write a literary analysis demonstrating

knowledge of symbolism, characterization, and theme.

• Students will be expanding and applying all skills learned

• by reading a second book and comparing and contrasting the theme of tolerance/intolerance and the human experience.

The Pearl RAFT Example

• Kino, I sit quietly on the floor of your hut each day. I have a perspective like no other. I can see you love your family deeply. I see “the song of the family”(1)., and you as you go through your day. Though you may not speak it you know “the rhythm of the family song” (3). Simply by watching Juana “work the corn for the morning cakes.”(3). Treasure these moments, these quiet times and take every opportunity to show your love for your family. You are a wonderful father and husband, humble and proud.
