Thurs: As this year marks TLM’s 140th anniversary, many member countries are planning events, campaigns, book launches and appeals. Pray that there will be interest from the media, and that member countries will be able to effectively express the rich history of TLM and the life-changing work it has carried out over so many years. Fri: Give thanks for the strong church partnerships that exist in many countries where TLM works. Pray that more church leaders will be inspired by TLM’s vision and will want to support TLM’s vision of seeing leprosy defeated and lives transformed. Sat/Sun: Pray for the Fundraising Working Group, made up of country leaders , Board members and other key staff. The group meets regularly throughout the year to discuss topics such as strategy and effective stewardship and to look at ways fundraising can become more of a priority around the Mission. Pray for good working relationships among the group and insightful discussions. Prayer points

Resource Mobilisation

In 2013 TLM member countries agreed a new vision, mission and strategy for TLM globally (see page 2). Part of this new strategy involves a renewed focus on mobilising resources such as prayer, funding and partnerships to enable TLM to effectively achieve its mission. Historically much of the fundraising has been done through supporting countries rather than countries where we operate our programmes. But there is a growing awareness that all TLM member countries need, to some degree, to look at ways funds can be raised locally, either through trusts, governments or individuals. Yet prayer remains our most valuable resource; there is a strong desire around The Leprosy Mission world that we will engage more prayer partners and build relationships with more churches.

Country Focus: Nepal

About The Leprosy Mission Nepal Anandaban HospitalThis is the main leprosy referral hospital for Nepal, covering all 75 districts. Its services include reconstructive surgery, management of leprosy reaction and ulcer care. Anandaban also runs a leprosy referral clinic in Butwal (Western Nepal) and a specialised leprosy satellite clinic in Chandranigapur. The hospital recently started a daily urban clinic in the city of Patan. TLM Nepal is planning to open another satellite clinic this year.

Socio-Economic Rehabilitation (SER) and Community Empowerment, Development, Disability and Rehabilitation (CEDAR) projects These initiatives assist leprosy-affected people to overcome the challenges they face, such as disability and stigma. The projects establish self-help groups providing members with loans for small businesses, low-cost homes, education and training opportunities, and instruction on self-care.

Mycobacterial Research LaboratoryLocated at Anandaban Hospital, the laboratory carries out research in order to improve treatment of leprosy and to find ways of preventing the disease.

Training and Technical SupportOver 1,000 medical and para-medical staff are trained annually by the training unit at Anandaban Hospital. The main focus is to enhance government health workers’ skills in leprosy.

Top: The Leprosy Mission Nepal teamAbove: The Leprosy Mission Nepal Board members Shovakhar Kandel, TLM Nepal country leader, is far left

Mon: TLM Nepal is aiming to build up the capacity of government doctors, surgeons and physiotherapists so that they will be able to deliver leprosy reconstructive surgeries in more districts, making it accessible to many more people. Pray for interest from government hospitals and a willingness to learn new skills.

Tues: In Nepal there are around 50,000 people living with leprosy-related disabilities. Some organisations who had been working in the field of leprosy are beginning to withdraw from leprosy activities. Praise God that TLM Nepal is committed to focusing on leprosy until the task is finished.

Weds: The number of leprosy experts in Nepal is declining. It is vital that Anandaban Hospital continues to provide high-quality medical care to leprosy-affected people. Pray that as they do this they will also have opportunity to teach and train other health workers so that leprosy will not be misdiagnosed.

Thurs: The community-based rehabilitation projects have, so far, enabled 2,700 families to earn a living and improve their opportunities in life. But they have not yet been able to cover all the needy areas where leprosy-affected people live. Pray for TLM Nepal as they plan to expand this project this year.

Fri: Praise God for the 412 students that TLM Nepal is supporting through school. Pray that they will be dedicated learners and will bring renewed hope for the future to their families.

Sat/Sun: Over 100 self-help groups have been formed by TLM Nepal. Praise God for the training the members have received on income generation, advocacy, leadership and prevention of disability.
