OLD QUESTION

WHICH CAME FIRST?by Kathy Wolfe

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? While we may never solve this great debate, Tidbits can keep us informed of some of the interesting facts about each of them, while celebrating May as National Egg Month.• It’s believed that the first chickens came to North America with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage here in 1493. There are now about 200 different breeds, with approximately 280 million laying hens in the U.S., each one producing about 250 to 300 eggs a year. Those seven billion eggs comprise about 10 percent of the world’s supply. • If brown bread is better for you, does that mean that brown eggs are, too? Not at all! There is no nutritional, flavor, or hygienic difference between brown and white eggs. It’s all about what kind of chicken laid the egg. Rust-colored chickens, such as the Rhode Island Red and Plymouth Rock, lay brown eggs, while white eggs are laid by white fowl, such as the White Leghorn. The Leghorn accounts for about 90 percent of North America’s egg-laying chickens.

“The Three Musketeers”/”The Four Muske-teers” (PG) -- This is a two-DVD set containing the classic Richard Lester-directed films from the ‘70s starring Michael York, Richard Cham-berlain, Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch, Charlton Heston, Christopher Lee and Fay Dunaway. In the first film, York plays D’Artagnan, a naive country boy who travels to Paris to become a musketeer. He soon falls in with the Titular Three and becomes caught up in a mission to thwart the evil machinations of Cardinal Richelieu (Heston) and a pair of assassins (Lee and Dun-away). In the sequel, the Musketeers must pro-tect D’Artagnan’s love Constance (Welch) from being murdered by Faye Dunaway’s character, who is still hoping to disgrace the French queen and bring scandal and shame to England’s Duke of Buckingham. These are two great adventure films, filled with action, romance, humor and passion. You can tell the cast had a ball making them, their en-thusiasm just leaps from the screen. And for a reduced price of around $13 for the pair, how could you NOT own them?

DOG OF THE WEEK“Alice in Wonderland” (PG) -- Director Tim Bur-ton inflicts his Goth Kiddie aesthetic and Danny Elfman’s bombastic, intrusive score upon Lewis Carroll’s classic. To add insult to injury, he also drags Johnny Depp and a host of top-shelf talent (Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Anne Hatha-way, to name a few) into this frantic, CGI-laden muddlefest. Without regard or respect for the original works, Burton turns Carroll’s whimsical and intelligent stories into another hackneyed blockbuster popcorn flick, devoid of wit or charm or imagination.

WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES

From slippers to running shoes to boots, folks don different shoes for different reasons. This week, Tidbits brings you a small variety of foot-wear facts.• When Englishman Roger Bannister donned his running shoes on May 6, 1954, who knew that he would become the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes? He set his record time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds at the Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England, as 3,000 spectators looked on. His monumental record endured for only 46 days, when it was broken by his Aus-tralian rival, John Landy, who was about 1.5 seconds faster. Bannister went on to become a noted neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford. When asked if he viewed his running record as his most important achieve-ment, he replied that his 40 years as a neurolo-gist were much more significant. • Although we think of Elvis Presley when the hit “Blue Suede Shoes” is mentioned, it was first a hit for its writer, Carl Perkins, in 1956. As Per-kins played a dance gig a few months earlier, he overheard a young man say to his girlfriend, “Don’t step on my suedes.” That very night he went home and wrote the blockbuster hit on a brown paper sack. • From 1956 to 1977, Edson Arantes do Nasci-mento of Brazil put on his shoes to play football. While he called them football shoes, we refer to them as soccer shoes. Edson was better known as Pele, the all-time leading scorer of Brazil’s national football team and a member of three victorious World Cup teams.

WHAT CAME FIRST? (continued):

• A hen lays about 300 eggs a year, beginning at 19 weeks of age. The older she gets, the larger eggs she produces. It takes her about 24 to 26 hours to produce an egg. Thirty minutes after one egg is laid, she begins the process all over again.• Most eggs are laid between the hours of 7 and 11 a.m. The hen needs about 5 oz. of food and 10 oz. of water to create one egg. • Farmers can improve egg production just by regulating the lighting in the henhouse. The hens will lay more eggs if they’re fooled into thinking a day is 28 hours long. • The color of an egg yolk is dependent on what the hen eats. Hens consuming yellow corn or alfalfa produce eggs with medium yellow yolks, while those who eat feed with wheat or barley yield egg yolks of a lighter color. A yolk can be almost colorless if the hen is fed white corn meal. Since farmers are not permitted to add artificial colors to feed, some add natural yellow-orange materials, such as flower petals. • Although the albumen is also called the egg white, it’s not really white until it’s beaten or cooked. Two-thirds of the egg’s liquid weight is contained in the albumen, as well as more than half of the egg’s protein. The fresher the egg, the cloudier the egg white. This is due to the pres-ence of carbon dioxide inside the egg when it is laid. Since a fresh egg has had less time for the CO2 to escape, the white is cloudy. • There are about 17,000 tiny pores covering an egg’s surface through which the egg can absorb flavors and odors. That’s why it’s important to keep them in a carton. The carton also helps keep them fresh for at least four to five weeks af-ter their pack date. Leaving eggs on the kitchen counter for just one day ages them more than refrigerator storage of one week. Eggs are more likely to dry up than to rot.• A person suffering from alektorophobia is afraid of chickens. • In order to be classified as Extra Large, a dozen eggs must weigh at least 27 oz. A dozen Large eggs must be 24 oz., and Medium, 21 oz. per dozen. • Having trouble peeling hard-boiled eggs? They will peel more easily if they are at least a week old before being boiled. Can’t remember if an egg is raw or hard-boiled? Try spinning it. If it spins easily, it’s been boiled. A raw egg wobbles.• 1957 marked the first year that finger-lickin’ good KFC was sold in its signature bucket. To-day, people in 80 countries enjoy one billion KFC dinners every year.

¥ It was American novelist, poet and painter -- and prominent member of the Beat Generation of artists -- William S. Burroughs who made the following dec-laration: “I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it.” ¥ If you wanted to dig to the center of the earth, you’d have to go down about 4,000 miles. ¥ Those of you who need your daily java fix probably won’t be surprised to learn that coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide and is one of the most traded agricultural commodi-ties. Due to limitations in cultivation, however, Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that produces the beans. ¥ The world’s largest dam, located in Canada, is 2,790 feet long -- twice as long as Arizona and Nevada’s Hoover Dam. The truly amazing thing isn’t its size, though; it’s the manner of con-struction. Over the course of several months, the dam was built entirely by beavers. ¥ According to industry experts, bev-erage makers sell 9 billion cases of carbonated soda in the United States every year. ¥ If you ever open a magazine or watch TV, you’ve probably seen at least one ad from the “Got Milk?” campaign. You probably didn’t know, though, that the same campaign also broke new adver-tising ground with ads at bus stops that weren’t just visual; they also gave off the odor of fresh-baked cookies. That particular approach was quickly aban-doned due to concerns about allergies. ¥ Popular cooking expert and televi-sion host Rachael Ray reportedly has a sign hanging outside her door that says “Martha doesn’t live here.”

Where would modern blues and rock and roll be without the influence of B.B. King? This week, Tidbits looks at one of the most significant guitarists of our time. • Riley B. King, the “King of the Blues,” was born in a sharecropper’s cabin on the Mississippi Delta in 1925. Upon the death of his mother when he was nine years old, Riley went to live with his grand-mother until her death. Just 14 when she passed away, he continued to live in her cabin and farm an acre of cotton. It soon became apparent that he couldn’t support himself in this manner. He moved in with another tenant farm family, who loaned him $2.50 to buy his first guitar. The local preacher taught him his first three chords.• Riley’s first singing group, known as The Famous St. John’s Gospel Singers, includ-ed his cousin and three others. On Satur-day nights, King was also playing the blues for dimes on Mississippi street corners.• Riley B. King arrived in Memphis at age 21, and convinced a local D.J. to let him play a song on his blues radio show. This led to the chance to play live at a Memphis saloon, provided he promoted the saloon on the radio station. The sta-tion set King up with a ten-minute spot and allowed him to play his guitar, just as long as he promoted a new health tonic called Pepticon. He wrote a catchy jingle, singing, “Pepticon, Pepticon, sure is good. You can get it anywhere in your neighborhood.”• King started out calling himself the Beale Street Blues Boy, changed it to Blues Boy King, and finally settled on B.B. King. • Two of Kings’ greatest hits were the result of divorce. After the end of his first marriage, he wrote “Woke Up This Morn-ing,” and Divorce No. 2 resulted in his big-gest hit, “The Thrill is Gone.”• Lucille, B.B. King’s trademark guitar, goes back to 1949. On a chilly night in Twist, Arkansas, King was playing a gig in a dance hall, which was kept warm by a large barrel of kerosene in the center of the room. When two patrons started a fight, they knocked over the barrel of burning kerosene, creating a fiery inferno. After King had exited the building, he realized he had left his Gibson acoustic guitar behind, and ran back into the blaze to rescue it, nearly losing his life. Two others did in fact perish in the fire. The next morning he learned that the men who had tipped the barrel were fighting over a woman named Lucille. B.B. named that guitar, and every one since, Lucille, “to remind me never to do a thing like that again.” His current Lucille is a Gibson ES-355, a model he has been playing for over 25 years. • In one year, 1956, B.B. King performed 342 one-night stands.• B.B. King was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1984, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and the Song-writer’s Hall in 1990.

IT TAKES TWO by Bonnie St. ClairLaurel without Hardy? Bert without Ernie? Hall without Oates? They just wouldn’t have been the same. Join Tidbits as we share stories behind some famous “people pairs”

and how they managed to discover one another.• In the original story, Batman met the boy who would become Robin in 1940. Dick Grayson was an eight-year-old circus acrobat, the son of trapeze artists. When a gangster who’d been extorting money from the circus sabotaged the riggings, Dick’s parents fell to their deaths. Batman investi-gated the crime, and he became fond enough of the boy to become his legal guardian (as his alter ego, Bruce Wayne). He instructed the youngster in the ways of fighting crime

and dubbed him Robin, the Boy Wonder.• Cherilyn Sarkisian dropped out of school and moved to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actress. At 17, she met Sonny Bono at Aldo’s Coffee Shop. Bono worked for music producer Phil Spector and was able to get Cher, as he called her, work as a background vocalist. A songwriter at heart, Sonny had peddled his tunes without much success. But when he and Cher became romantically involved, the pair recorded his tune “I Got You, Babe,” which hit number one on the pop chart and made stars of Sonny and Cher.

• One day in 1881, Dr. John Watson happened to rent a room at a lodging house at 221B Baker Street in London, England. His roommate was a mysterious chap named Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was quite secretive about what he did for a living, but eventually confessed that he was a private detective, which (at the time) was a rather rare profession. Fascinated by Holmes’ tales and the way he employed logical deduction to

solve cases, the two became not only friends but also coworkers and confidantes. • That levelheaded, sturdy housewife Blondie wasn’t so very domestic when she first appeared in the newspaper comics section some 70 years ago. Blondie Boopadoop was a carefree flapper back in 1930, when she met Dagwood Bumstead, the young play-boy son of a railroad tycoon. In fact, Dagwood’s millionaire father opposed his son’s re-lationship with Blondie, and threatened to cut off his financial support if they continued seeing one another. The elder Bumstead grudgingly gave his blessing to the marriage, but he still nixed his son’s inheritance, forcing Dagwood to become one of the working

class.• Clyde Barrow was born into extreme poverty in rural Texas. As he came of age, the Great Depression ravaged the nation, and the angry young man turned to burglary and robbery as a means of survival. One December evening in 1929, he was visiting a friend when he heard a clatter in the kitchen. “That’s Bonnie Parker,” the pal told him. “She’s making hot chocolate. Go say hello.” It was love at first sight; the pair chatted into the wee hours of the morning. The next day, Bonnie hit the road with Clyde and the pair

machine-gunned their way to infamy.• Daniel Wesson was born to a family in Worcester, Massachusetts. At 18, he was apprenticed to his brother’s shoe manufacturing company, but grew dissatisfied and joined up with another brother, Edwin, as a journeyman gunsmith. In 1852, Daniel met Horace Smith, a fellow gun enthusiast who’d learned about firearms while working at the

National Armory in nearby Springfield. They formed a partnership with the goal of marketing a lever action repeating pistol, and the

two became well known as Smith & Wesson.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Don’t Fall for This Free LunchHave you seen the ads? They offer us a free lunch at a posh loca-tion while we attend a seminar on financial investing, with experts to advise us. Don’t be taken in by it. It could be the most expen-sive lunch you’ll ever have. The Securities and Exchange Commis-

sion and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority just released a report detailing the investment scams that are becoming rampant against seniors. While the study concentrated on Southern states, there’s no doubt this is happening

across the country. The scam works like this: When you think you’re going to an in-vestment education seminar that includes a free lunch at a nice place, you end up facing high-pressure sales tactics and misleading claims. You might be pushed to open new accounts, sign complicated docu-ments (without being given the opportunity to read them or take them to your attorney for review) or buy investment products that aren’t suitable for you (or that

might not even exist).Because we’re seniors and the top-ic is important to us, we’re prom-ised high returns on our life sav-ings with safe investments and excellent liquidity for a financially

secure retirement. Here are two ways to educate your-

self against investment fraud:¥ Go to AARP (www.aarp.org) and look at its online videos. Search for investment fraud and “The Lure of Money.” While you’re there, take the Investment Fraud IQ test

to see how you score.¥ Go to www.sec.gov and search for “free lunch report” for the whole 46-page study. It includes examples of the ads that are used in these scam free-lunch invest-ment seminars. If you have ques-

tions, call the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy at 800-SEC-0330.

Here’s a scary thought: Research shows that 78 percent of us have received one of these free-lunch invitations.

Pug Smells Really GnarlyDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old pug that really smells. I take “Deb” to have her bathed, and a day later she smells again. I was giving her a bath every week and was told that it would dry out her skin. What should I do about it? I hate to give her up, but she smells really bad. Sign me -- Pinching My Nose in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR PINCHING MY NOSE: I’ve never owned a dog that smelled so bad I had to give it up. But I have owned a few smelly dogs in my lifetime. In most cases of chronic odiferousness, a skin problem or other medical condition is the culprit. That’s why I would recommend you take Deb to a veterinarian who has experience with pugs and their unique issues. Any time a dog’s odor is frequently and noticeably unpleasant -- not just when you get up close to their fur and sniff, but almost literally “Oh man, Deb’s in the room,” you should have her checked out.One problem that’s been noted in pugs is yeast infec-tions, which can produce a rather gnarly smell. Dogs prone to these infections need careful monitoring and shouldn’t be bathed too much (as dry skin can worsen the problem).Because pugs can suffer from skin problems and aller-gies, you want to be careful about how frequently Deb is bathed and what shampoos are used. Talk to the vet about best grooming practices for a pug.
