June 13th Ballroom D 11:00 am-2:30 pm Ann GoudvisThinking Intensive: Active Literacy Practices in the Social Studies

David Perkins suggests that “Learning is a consequence of thinking…far from thinking coming after knowledge, knowledge comes on the coattails of thinking”. If students are to learn and remember information beyond Friday’s quiz, we need to make reading in history and social studies “thinking intensive”. That means we teachers peel back the layers of our own reading and thinking processes to demonstrate how we reason through and annotate texts, ask thoughtful questions, and read with a critical eye and a skeptical stance. Active literacy practices such as these, and others outlined in the CCSS for grades 6-12, can foster deeper learning in history and geography and engage students in becoming “literate” in these disciplines. This session will emphasize 5 practices that focus on comprehension and thinking strategies for history and social studies, all of which can be adapted and used with many different topics and texts.
