The History of Marwell Hall

Marwell hall was built in the early 14 th century (around 1312) by Walter Woodlock, a relative of the Bishop of Winchester. It was timber framed structure of the type known as a base cruck; in size about 8 metres by 13 metres. Over the centuries many alterations have been made, but the original medieval hall remains as the core of the building.

In the early 1500s ownership passed to the Seymour Family. Henry VIII is said to have been a frequent visitor. Local legend likes us to believe that he and his third wife, Jane Seymour, were married here. Jane Seymour’s son Edward VI is said to have visited the hall, and the royal arms and the initials E.R can be seen carved over the fireplace in the hall.

In 1644 Marwell Hall was the scene of a skirmish between Roundheads and Cavaliers. A newsletter of the times relates that a party of about 200 Cavaliers, having spent much of the day drinking in Winchester, rode out to Marwell to engage a troop of sixty of Waller’s men. In spite of outnumbering the Roundheads by more than three to one, they were routed, and fled back to Winchester.

For some forty years, from 18101820 onwards, the Hall was occupied by the Long Family. William Long made considerable alterations to the hall during his time, resulting in the building that stands here today.

The massive Cedar that stands on the lawn at the back of the hall was probably planted by William Long, and is about 200 years old. Its girth is now five and a half metres.

In the middle of the nineteenth century (1851 to 1862) Marwell Hall was owned by a gentleman by the name of John Gully. He survived, but lost, a 64 round boxing match (before the days of the Queensbury rules), trained racehorses at Danebury (but not, it seems at Marwell), had two wives, twentyfour children and became the MP for Pontrefract.

Function Rooms and Capacities Marwell hall boasts three beautifully decorated rooms which can be booked for ceremonies for up to 80 guests.

The Long Room The elegant room was named after Sir William Long who, in 1816, created Marwell Hall as we see it today. Graced by tall mullioned windows, impressive fireplace and decorative cornice, this large room, entered by grand doorways, makes the perfect setting for your wedding ceremony.

Maximum Capacity is 80 guests including the bride, groom, registrars and photographer.

The Woodlock Room This airy room, with its deep bay mullioned window, is named in honour of Walter Woodlock who built Marwell Hall in the early 14 th Century. The medieval hall was a timber structure which remains the core of the building today. Over many centuries different owners, who all played a part in our history, have added rooms to the hall. In the 21 st century these find a new use as a delightful setting for your wedding.

Maximum capacity is 40 guests including the bride, groom, registrars and photographer.

The Seymour Library The ornate fireplace of this distinguished room bears the coat of arms and motto of the Seymour family. Marwell Hall was owned in the mid1500 by Sir Henry Seymour. He was the brother of Jane, Henry Vlll’s third wife. The room is partly panelled and lined with library shelves and the attractive ceiling has appropriate decorative details. With two large windows and impressive doorways, this room has the right atmosphere for an important but joyous occasion.

Maximum capacity is 40 guests including the bride, groom, registrars and photographer.

Guidance notes for booking a civil ceremony The bride and groom are requested to contact the Superintendent Registrar at the contact details below:

Winchester Registry Office 6 Station Hill Winchester Hampshire

Telephone number 01962 869 608

The Superintendent Registrar must be present for your marriage to be official. Therefore we strongly recommend making an advance booking with the registrars for their attendance at your marriage.

Please note that no food or drink may be consumed in the civil ceremony room, one hour before or one hour after the ceremony.

Marwell Wildlife accepts no responsibility for the validity of the marriage and any information supplied by them should not be relied upon – you, must seek complete information from the Superintendent Registrar.

3. The following charges are levied by the registrars office and are payable directly to them: £255 for Monday to Friday ceremonies, £310 for Saturdays and £350 for Sundays (fees are correct at the time of printing but are subject to review in April of each year)

4. CD and tape facilities will be available to play background music for guests on arrival and for the bride’s entrance, but all music must be cleared with the Registrar before it may be used.
