Congratulations on your engagement! You are about to embark on one of the most exciting adven-tures of your lifetime – the journey to your wedding day. Can I guess your rst thoughts are of wedding dresses and honeymoon locations? May I suggest that the key to a smooth journey is to rst complete a little homework, and then begin “window shopping” for the venue that best ts you? Before you begin venue shop-ping:

1. Select a few wedding dates that work for you and your family; Locking yourself into one date will limit the available venues, so the more dates the better!

2. Estimate the number of guests who will attend. Usually you will have three guest lists to merge – the groom’s family, the bride’s family and the couple. Estimate about 70% of the guests you invite will attend.

3. Set your budget, and know that approximately 40% of your budget will be used for venue, food and drink. Some wedding venues may offer a lower cost for the venue up front, but require you to use their food service, which can be more

expensive than a private caterer or self-catering.4. Do you want to have your ceremony and recep-

tion in the same place? Finding a venue that can accommodate both can save money. Many churches have a charge for your ceremony, so be sure that is part of your venue budget.

Now, go have some fun. Research venues on the internet, ask friends, gather a venue list from www.billingsmontanaweddings.com/local_vendors.htm, make an appointment and begin the adventure, taking your ancé or family members to help. Your options will in-clude historic buildings, mansions, private event centers, art museums, gardens, hotels, tents, parks and private family residences. And because every venue contracts differently, here are a few questions that are important to ask:

• What is the deposit and payment schedule? • Is any part of the deposit retained for clean-up or

damages?• What is not covered in the contract?• Will a staff person be on site the wedding day?• Is a security guard required, and is it covered in

the contract?• Does the venue own a sound system?• What are the event hours and overtime charges?• Are we required to use the in-house food service, or can we hire our own caterer?

• Do we need to hire a licensed bar or is there one on site?

• Is there room for a band and/or dancing?• Is there a space for the bride and groom to

change?• Is there adequate parking and is there a fee?• Are there limitations on decorating?• Are candles or other open fl ames allowed?• Is there a separate venue rental list?• What is the set-up and clean-up policy?• Does the venue require we have event insurance?

Remember to have fun, and the job will be much easier. Keep in mind that you are planning a wonderful party for your friends and family. If you start early, I promise you will nd the venue that ts the celebration of your love and romance. With the venue contract signed, you can move forward in making your dream come true.

A to-do list for brides-to-be

Preparing for the big day means planning a multitude of details; everything from the ower arrangements to that something blue must be decided upon well in advance of the ceremony. Here are some tips to help ensure your big day goes off without a hitch.

The Big Decisions The decision to get married is the rst of

many big decisions you will be making in the weeks and months to come. Here are some things to consider right away:

• Pick a date. Talk with your fi ancé and fam-ily (and your fi ancé’s family) about poten-tial wedding dates to ensure the important people in both your lives will be able to take part.

• Select your guests. The number of guests you invite will directly in uence the cost of your wedding.

• Set a budget. Budgeting for your wedding is crucial, as this will have a great impact on every other aspect of your day, as well as your honeymoon. Plan a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses.

• Choose a location. Because most popular bridal spots are just that - popular - you may want to start searching for a location quickly.

• Organize the bridal party. Make careful de-cisions about who you want supporting you leading up to the big day, and who will be displayed in front of everyone in your life.

• Pick a style. Many brides choose wedding styles that are refl ected in their save-the-dates, invitations, ceremonies, receptions and thank you cards. Choosing a theme and color scheme in the beginning will help narrow down options later.

• Hire a caterer. Take into account the dietary needs of your guests by offering a variety

of menu options, including a vegetarian dish.• Order the cake. Whether you choose a large multi-

tiered cake or cupcakes, remember to keep your budget in mind-and pick flavors you and your fiancé truly enjoy.

• Make the announcement. Decide how you want to let the community know of your planned nuptials. Do you want to take professional engagement pho-tos? Do you plan to contact your local paper? Will you include a link to a wedding day website on your save-the-date or your wedding invitations?

• Get the gown. On your wedding day, everyone will be awaiting a glimpse of your gown. Listen to your instincts and choose a gown that “feels right” and reflects your personality and style.

• Dress your party. Once you have chosen the wed-ding dress of your dreams, speak with your fiancé about his wishes for his suit, as well as the bridal party attire.

• Hire a photographer. Choose your professional photographer wisely. With a walk down the aisle, father/daughter dance and toast, your father is

sure to get photographed, but your mother might get overlooked. Make sure to ask the photographer to get shots of your mother throughout the day as well.

• Choose your flowers. Once you set the date, discuss with your florists which flowers are in season to help narrow down your selection. You may love tulips, but if you have a winter wedding, they may be hard to come by, and may be more expensive.

• Book the entertainment. Do you want a DJ or a live band? Talk with your fiancé about your music preferences, as well as the types of tunes you want played at your reception to keep your guests on the dance floor.

Before the Big Day• Create a website for your wedding to keep guests

informed of events and for easy access to registry information. Provide accommodation information for those guests traveling from out of town.

• Insure your engagement and wedding rings against loss, damage, theft or mysterious disappearance. Ac-

cording to a survey conducted by Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company, 44 percent of married women either don’t insure their engagement ring, or don’t know for certain whether their engagement and wedding rings are insured.

• Make sure your marriage license, travel documenta-tion and insurance information are ready to go and stored in a safe place in advance of the wedding day.

• Practice reciting your vows and speeches until you feel comfortable.

• Wear your wedding heels around the house to “break them in.” Pack a back-up pair of flats to wear during the reception.

• Remember to ask for help. Designate members of your family or close friends to specific assignments.

Wedding Day Details • Provide bottled water for your wedding party. To

ensure no one gets over-heated, hide water near your bridal party during the ceremony for emer-gencies.

• Choose meaningful gifts for your wedding party. Necklaces, earrings or bracelets are great for bridesmaids; cufflinks are perfect for groomsmen.

• Create individual envelopes for tip-ping drivers, caterers, musicians, etc. Separate envelopes will help ensure you don’t forget anyone.

• Plan for weather. In case of rain - Order a tent or choose a venue with indoor space for last-minute protec-tion from the elements. Offer extra umbrellas to usher people from their vehicles to the venue. In case of heat - Place fans throughout the venue

and provide plenty of water for guests. In case of cold - Space heaters can be placed throughout the space to warm up the room in advance of the event.

• Over-estimate the amount of parking needed for guests.

Following the Honeymoon• Open wedding gifts and keep an

Sparkles, spangles and color, new or vintage, whatever your preference in wedding shoe styles there’s one trend that every bride should get behind: comfort.

“Pretty ats and even tennis shoes have been gaining popularity among brides for several years, and while those styles may not be to everyone’s taste, the concept of comfortable wedding shoes is good for everyone,” says Dr. Crystal Holmes, a doctor of podiatric medi-cine (DPM) and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

While an APMA survey indicates that most women do emphasize com-fort over looks when choosing dress shoes, brides may consider comfort less important than style on their big day. “Brides may think that since they’re only wearing their wedding shoes for a day, it doesn’t matter if the shoes make their feet hurt,” Holmes says. “But shoes that hurt your feet can cause long-term prob-lems, and make existing ones even worse. Sore feet can put a damper on your wed-ding, reception and even honeymoon.”

The APMA offers some advice for choosing the most comfortable options in some popular wedding styles:

Pumps A classic wedding shoe, bridal pumps

come in a wide variety of styles, colors and heights. When choosing a pump, be aware that pointy shoes place pressure on the toes and can aggravate problems like hammertoes and bunions. Choose

pumps with deep, wide toe boxes that give you plenty of room to wiggle your toes. Keep in mind lower heels are better, especially if you’ll be in your wedding shoes for several hours.

Ballet atsFlirty, feminine and fun, ballet ats

can feel more comfortable than heels. But very at shoes can actually be harmful to your arch and heel. Opt for a at that has a bit of a heel, a thicker sole, and plenty of cushioning and support. Avoid ats that bend in half or easily twist.

Kitten heelsWhen it comes to good looks and

foot-friendly design, kitten heels are the cat’s meow. Typically lower than one inch, kitten heels add a touch of height without placing undue pressure on the ball of the foot that higher heels can cause. They also tend to be a bit wider than the average heel, making them more stable and comfortable.

Platforms and wedgesTowering platforms and wedges

provide height, style and endless options. But wearing these higher styles requires brides to take extra caution. Platforms and wedges may compromise your bal-ance and stability, and very high shoes can lead to ankle rolls and falls. Look for lower platforms and wedges that feature secure ankle straps. Cork bottoms pro-vide some shock absorption and traction.

Peep toesPopular among brides who want to

show off their pretty pedicures, peep toes range from towering heels to functional ats. Regardless of heel height, peep toes may cause your toes to slip forward or overlap, or may even push nail edges into the skin to form an ingrown toenail. Avoid peep toes that are too tight, and be sure they are free of seams near the toe area, as seams place further pressure on toes.

Sling backsShowing a irty ash of heel, sling

backs are dynamic and sexy—perfect for walking down the aisle and kicking up your heels during the reception. Look for a sling back with a lower heel that will be more comfortable for extended wear-ing. Straps should be snug but not too tight to avoid cha ng on the back of the heel. Too loose straps may cause the shoe to slip off your foot, so a proper strap t is important.

Whatever style you choose, some advice is universal:

• Very high heels place pressure on your feet, shifting your entire body weight. If you plan to wear your heels throughout the entire ceremony and reception - likely more than two hours - consider choosing a heel of no more than two inches. Or, save the very high heels for the ceremony and switch to a lower, more comfortable heel for afterward.

• Brightly colored or patterned wed-ding shoes are in vogue now, and while color doesn’t affect comfort the material might. Materials that provide stability and stretch may be better for your feet. Avoid plas-tic, vinyl and other materials that don’t allow feet to breathe.

• Shoes should have a fl exible sole that allows toes to bend naturally when you walk and a rigid, cush-ioned heel counter to keep the foot in place inside the shoe.

• Inserts are a great way to help cushion heels, arches and the balls of your feet. It’s easy to nd inserts that work with virtually any style of wedding shoe.

• When shopping for your wedding shoes, keep in mind that, like any shoe, they should be comfortable immediately. Never buy uncom-fortable shoes thinking that you’ll “break them in.” And shop for your bridal shoes at the end of the day. Not only do most weddings take place later in the day, your feet swell to their largest in the evening. Buying your wedding shoes at that time of day will ensure you get the best t.

When it comes to the big day, you want a wedding that suits you and your ancé perfectly, whether it’s a ca-sual outdoor affair or a formal black-tie event. One thing every couple can agree on is that planning a wedding shouldn’t be stressful.

A few insider tips and trends of 2013 will help you plan the wedding of your dreams without undue stress. Start by utilizing online resources. Planning months in advance can help ensure you get every detail perfect for your dream wedding. A variety of helpful online resources will provide everything you need.

For the latest trends without the extra cost, renting has never been more in vogue. Helpful sites like Rent-alHQ.com-from the American Rental Association (ARA) have everything you need to create your dream wed-ding. From choosing your china and linens to nding the latest decor and color options, it’s a great planning resource. Brides remain stress-free because many ARA rental stores offer complementary professional assistance for wedding equipment rentals, help-ing you plan all the intricate details for your big day.

Next visit Brides.com, the online website for Brides magazine, which has a plethora of informational articles as well as info on the latest bridal trends. From tips on choosing the right dress to a beauty calendar checklist for up to 12 months before the big day, it’s a fantastic resource for staying organized. For the do-it-herself bride, Pinterest.com is a great resource for nding unique decor and ideas to make your wedding completely “you.”

When you’re feeling stumped about some aspect of planning, TheKnot.com is sure to inspire. Start by learning your personal wedding style - are you modern, vintage or off-beat? Then jump into learning about color schemes, fashion, honeymoons and more. MyWedding.com is a help-ful resource also, with a variety of planning tools, insightful guides and the opportunity for couples to create a free website about their wedding.

Want to know some of the top bridal trends of 2013? From color to cake, brides today are thinking outside the box. Here are some top trends to consider:

ColorWhen it comes to colors there’s no

need to be coy - top trends of 2013 are bright and bold. From ruby reds, rich blues, vivid violets and sunshine yellows, splashes of color liven up your decor and create a memorable atmosphere. It’s easy to seamlessly incorporate a fun color without going over the top when you rent - consider renting runners, centerpieces and even stemware in the color of your choice.

DessertWhile traditional brides may pre-

fer a multilayered wedding cake, many others are taking a fun approach to desserts. Do you and your honey love apple pie? Place homemade apple pies on each table. Have your rst date at an ice cream parlor? Set up an ice cream bar with a variety of toppings for guests to create their own sundae. You can rent all the extras to create an authentic ice cream shop atmo-sphere.

Go virtualIt’s unlikely that every guest you

invite will be able to attend, so now technology is bringing people closer together no matter where they reside. Couples with guests who live far away or family who aren’t able to attend are now sharing their special day by live-streaming the ceremony and reception. Guests can then attend the wedding virtually.

BouquetsFlowers are beautiful, but creative

brides are taking a fresh look at tradi-tional bouquets. Adorn your blooms with gems or feathers for a stunning accent as you walk down the aisle.

Or, skip owers altogether and create a family heirloom - gather vintage brooches from friends and family and make a sparkling jewelry bouquet with supplies from your local craft store.

Whatever trends you decide to incorporate into your big day, renting your dream wedding supplies rather than buying is a wise decision. You’ll get the latest trends at an affordable price.

Tips for planning a Honeymoon or Destination WeddingCourtesy of Travel Café

Your honeymoon is the best time to start making memories as a married couple. Too often, honeymoons are an afterthought to wedding planning. A hon-eymoon is an investment in memories for the rest of your life, so don’t take chances with it. Start with a conversation. Discuss the level of luxury and privacy you want, what you want to do every day, and the type of nightlife you desire.

Researching your trip online is easy and fun, but when it comes to booking your all-important honeymoon, the advan-tages of working with a travel agent are myriad. Agents can offer you the benefit of their globetrotting experiences; inside lines to discounts not widely advertised; package deals and a range of itinerary options; one-stop shopping for air, car, and hotel reservations; and, last but not least, peace of mind. They are your saviors and advocates when travel plans go awry. Here are some points to help you find the agent of your dreams.

Some travel agencies, stung by poten-tial clients who “window shop” for agents and itineraries then book the tickets themselves, have started charging a fee for their services and expertise. This fee varies according to the intricacies of the trip and may be waived when the trip is booked or included in the final quote. If you trust and like the agent, consider it a small price to pay for a perfectly planned honeymoon.

What’s one of the most important agent credentials? First-hand experience with a property. An agent who has visited a specific hotel knows which room has the best view and can recommend what to order for dessert at the restaurant. Best of all, he may have an inside line to the owner and be able to make special requests on your behalf. Also look for the CTC – Certified Travel Counselor.

Ensure the best honeymoon experi-ence for you and your spouse when you purchase a honeymoon package in

advance, including your flight, hotel, and activities. You’ll want to finalize and book your honeymoon approximately 4-6 months before you plan to travel. To give yourself enough time to prepare for your honeymoon, start shopping and packing about 1-2 weeks before your trip. Make sure to leave at least one day in-between your wedding day and your honeymoon trip. Most flights leave in the early morn-ing, so you’ll want to give yourself enough time to get to the airport and not feel rushed. Give yourself the luxury of extra time.

Eliminate the stress of wedding plan-ning when you plan your destination wedding with these tips. While selecting a destination, check with the country’s tourism board or consulate for all legal wedding requirements. It’s usually required that you and/or your witnesses arrive a few days before the ceremony—the number of days varies per destination. This will give you time to meet with the wedding coordinator and double check what you have planned. This is the trip of a lifetime, so pamper yourself by fly-ing first class, upgrading your room to a suite, or by choosing a resort that caters to destination weddings. Go for the all-inclusive wedding/honeymoon package. With your food, beverages, accommoda-tions, and amenities taken care of, it’ll be one less thing on your mind for your big day. Check to see whether your resort is family-friendly or adults only, as that will impact your guest list.

Attention brides—if your passport is issued in your maiden name, make sure the information on your flight and hotel reservations matches your passport and any other required travel documentation. Bring a copy of your marriage certificate. Many hotels require proof of marriage to take advantage of special amenities exclu-sive for honeymooning couples.

Relax and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Planning your wedding or just daydreaming about it? We all want a system to file away all our wonderful pictures and DIY ideas. The old three-ring binder has gone by the wayside as brides have become addicted to Pinterest, a convenient and high-tech solution to almost every wedding question. Pinterest is an online bulletin board that you can “pin” with your favorite ideas categoriz-ing them into “boards” and sharing with friends, family and vendors. It is im-mensely easy, and best of all, it is FREE!

Are you a DIY Bride? Watching your budget? I suggest starting with one of the many Pinterest “Wedding Budgets”, laying out a plan before you spend a cent. Then go shopping – first for an event location. DIY Brides should look for a venue that provides space for both ceremony and reception, and the rules are flexible in what they allow you to bring in.

Whether you want to save money

or include personalized touches, do-it-yourself details can make a big impact. But some projects are more difficult than others, and what you thought would be a breeze could turn into an undertak-ing that takes your stress levels to new highs. To avoid DIY overload, choose wisely what you will create. Sure, you can execute all the elements of a wedding reception yourself: food, entertainment, music, favors, (non-alcoholic) drinks, centerpieces, other decorations and the dreaded clean-up afterwards...but it might be safer for you to pick which ideas excite you the most. It is best to find a good balance between creating it yourself and getting help from others - whether hiring professionals or enlisting friends and family.

Yes, there are a ton of super cute DIY wedding ideas on Pinterest. The key to having a beautiful wedding that doesn’t look homemade is to keep it cohesive. Stick with your overall theme and color

scheme. Pin your favorites, and then really ask yourself what belongs in your wedding and can you do it yourself!

And, not only has Pinterest changed the bride, but the bridal industry as well. The site facilitates the jobs of brides as well as industry professionals. It is much

more efficient viewing a bride’s Pinter-est boards as opposed to sifting through magazines in search of images that might reflect a bride’s vision for her big day.

Pinterest provides a platform to dis-cover and share things you love. It’s what weddings are made of!

Music is an integral element of many of life’s special events. The score of a movie can carry a film, and a tender song can bring tears to a person’s eyes during a stage production. Many couples spend lots of time choosing a song for their first dance at their wedding. While that song is significant, couples should devote lots of time to choosing a band or deejay for the reception as well.

Statistics compiled from a variety of sources, including USA Today, TheKnot.com and Brides magazine, point out that roughly 80 percent of guests say the thing they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment. When asked, many couples admit they wish they spent more time and money choosing their wedding entertainment.

Music helps make memories and gets guests on their feet. Those who enjoy themselves most at the wedding are often the people who are on the dance floor. It is important to note that price shouldn’t be the deciding factor for wedding day entertainment. It is crucial to see the entertainment provider in action to judge for oneself just how good he or she is.

One of the best ways to witness a deejay or band in action is to attend a wedding where they will be working. Find out if you can spend a little while peeking into a wedding and gauge guests’ responses to the music and find out how the entertainment engages the crowd. The entertainer may be able to arrange this with a couple from an upcoming wedding so that you don’t necessarily have to crash the wedding. If a musical entertainment company is wary of letting you see play-ers in action, it may be an indication to look elsewhere.

Another good way to see for yourself

if the entertainment factor is high is to pay attention to the bands and deejays used at weddings you attend. If you are planning nuptials in a year or the months to come, take the cards or information of the entertainers you come across at weddings and any special event parties. If there is someone who is doing an impec-cable job, there should be no hesitation to hire that person for your own wedding. Don’t be embarrassed to ask a friend or family member for the name and number of their deejay.

If you have specific music require-ments, such as cultural music or certain versions of songs you prefer to be played, it is key to discuss this with the deejay or band ahead of time and confirm they can meet your needs. Certain wedding vendors may promise you the world but fail to deliver. Ask the deejay for a playlist to see his or her selections for the wedding. Find out if the band has a compilation they can send to you so you can see how they sound performing some of the more popular songs typically played at wedding receptions.

If you like a particular band or deejay, double check that the people you see playing are actually the ones who will be performing at your wedding. Many times performers are part of larger companies that have many people working under one name. If you’re not careful, you may not get the same performer you had hoped for. Request specific individuals if you want to guarantee that the music will be what you heard at a previous wedding or during a trial performance.

Music can make or break a wedding reception. Invest ample time into selecting and trying out vendors to ensure fun is to be had by all.
