Independent Choices: Choose 2 of the following items to complete by yourself.

Character Word Cloud. Draw the head outline of one of the characters. Come up with 20 character traits. Create a word cloud inside of the character using different fonts and colors for each word. In the middle of your picture, include a theme quote that shows how the character feels. Use the samples provided in class for inspiration.

Chapter Comic Strip. Using the comic strip template provided, create a comic strip for one of the chapters. Focus on the main ideas and place them in sequential time order to create a cartoon of the chapter.

Point of View: Using the eye template provided, think of an important scene in the story and draw a picture of it through a character’s point of view. Draw the image inside of the eye.

Figurative Language Acrostic Poems: Use the name of three of the characters in the story and create one poem for each character in which you reveal something about them from the story using figurative language at least once within the name of the character.

Umbrella Themes: Brainstorm lessons that characters and/or readers learned that are related to each major theme. Write each theme underneath the umbrella. You must have a minimum of 4 themes for 4 umbrellas. Topic Themes: friendship, family, sacrifice, bravery, loyalty, judging others, love, standing up for your beliefs

Crossword Puzzle: Create a crossword puzzle for the story. Include themes, characters, events, settings, etc. to produce hints for someone to fill out. Make sure to create rough sketch of your answers to make sure the words and clues fit the design. 24 clues minimum. Character Poster: Using chart paper, draw a life-size character from the book and create a character profile for one of the major characters in the story. Be sure to include all aspects of characterization (looks, words, actions, what others say, that the character says.

Chapter Play: With your group, create a script for one of the chapters in the story. Create props and costumes and perform the play live or video tape it to show the class.

Board Game: Create a board game for the story. You will need to ask your teacher for the directions page and bring materials to build the game.

Grammar Brushstroke Phrase Posters: Using the following terms, create posters that give the term’s definition, a text example, and a picture. Terms: Appositive, Absolute, Prepositional, Adjectives out of Order, Participle. Give the entire sentence and underline the phrase, use a different font or color to focus on the phrase in the sentence.
